Section 1: Adding ValuePRO to Trusted Sites 1. Adding ValuePRO to Trusted Sites 1. Overview As with previous versions of Internet Explorer, it is recommended that you add your instance of ValuePRO to the Trusted Sites collection in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). Security features implemented in IE8 mean that certain features in ValuePRO will not work unless you complete the steps outlined below. 2. Changes Required 1. In IE8, the top right of the window contains a Tools dropdown menu: Open the menu and select Internet Options. 2. In the following popup window select the Security tab. Then click on the green tick for Trusted Sites. You should see a window like this:
Section 1: Adding ValuePRO to Trusted Sites 3. Press the Sites button to open the list of trusted sites. In the popup window you will see the address of the current website you are on. Ensure the checkbox Require server verification ( for all sites in this zone is not checked. If you are not currently using your ValuePRO instance you will need to enter the address in the first field as shown below. Press Add when you are done and then Close.
Section 2: Enabling Cross Site Scripting 2. Enabling Cross Site Scripting 1. Overview Your ValuePRO instance is designed to talk to several different ValuePRO websites behind the scenes under normal operation, such as the report rendering engine for example when generating invoices etc. Changes to the security implementation in IE8 mean that this kind of cross site communication between different web addresses is prevented and thus ValuePRO will not work correctly. By adding your ValuePRO address to the Trusted Sites zone, you can disable this feature safe in the knowledge that other websites that aren t in the Trusted Sites zone are still subject to this new security feature. 2. Changes Required 1. From the Security tab in Internet Options, ensure the Trusted Sites green tick is selected. Press the Custom Level... button towards the bottom of the window. 2. Scroll to the bottom of the list of options in the resulting popup window. You should see an entry for Enable XSS Filter ensure this is set to Disable:
Section 2: Enabling Cross Site Scripting After you have made the required changes you can close the Internet Options windows. You will know if you have correctly added your ValuePRO instance to the Trusted Sites zone by looking at the bottom of your IE8 window. Along the status bar you should see the following icon:
Section 3: Configuring Temporary Internet Files 3. Configuring Temporary Internet Files 1. Overview Internet Explorer allows you to determine the amount of space set aside for storing temporary internet files on your computer. These files include graphics, web pages and generally anything you open from the web in your browser. They are stored on your computer in case you visit the same page again in the future, allowing the page to open more quickly if the files don t have to be downloaded again. Without the correct level of storage available to Internet Explorer, the temporary internet files area can become full and websites will not be able to store information there. ValuePRO relies on the ability to be able to store pieces of information about your use on the site in the temporary internet files folder and if it is unable to do so, ValuePRO will not work correctly. 2. Changes Required 1. From the Internet Options menu, on the General tabs click the Settings button in the Browsing History section. A new popup window like the one shown below will open:
Section 3: Configuring Temporary Internet Files 2. Ensure the first setting, Check for newer versions of stored pages: is set to Automatically 3. ValuePRO recommends a typical setting for Disk space to use of 200mb. This will ensure there is plenty of room to store temporary internet files and allow the application to work correctly.
Section 4: Pop up Blocker 4. Pop up Blocker 1. Overview Internet Explorer allows you to configure whether popup windows are allowed. You can either turn the popup blocker off altogether or add your ValuePRO instance to a list of exception websites that are allowed to open pop ups. ValuePRO relies on the ability to open multiple windows while you are using it, and failure to allow pop ups for your site will mean the application doesn t work correctly. 2. Changes Required 1. From the Internet Options window, go to the Privacy tab. Towards the middle of this section you ll see the Pop up Blocker control. By default the pop up blocker should be turned on. You can switch it off here by un checking the tick box but ValuePRO recommends leaving it on and pressing the Settings button. 2. In the window that appears, you are able to add your website to the list of exceptions that aren t then subject to the pop up blocker. Your website address should already be in the Address of website to allow field if it hasn t already been added to the list of exceptions. If it is in the field, press the Add button and then close the window.
Section 4: Pop up Blocker
Section 5: Friendly Error Messages in IE8 5. Friendly Error Messages in IE8 1. Overview By default, IE8 will have Show Friendly HTTP Error Messages turned on. These error messages are designed to look a little less confusing when something goes wrong with the web page you are trying to load. On occasion, ValuePRO will attempt to do something that causes an error, and it is designed to display information that is helpful to the support team when trying to diagnose the problem. If friendly HTTP error messages are turned on, ValuePRO is unable to accurately report what has happened and it will hinder the support team s efforts to help you overcome the problem and continue working. 2. Changes Required 1. From the Internet Options window go to the Advanced tab. 2. In the Settings section, scroll about a third of the way down the list until you see the option Show friendly HTTP error messages ensure this is not ticked.
Appendix I: Troubleshooting IE8 Problems Appendix I. Troubleshooting IE8 Problems A. Report Rendering doesn t work As well as report rendering, printing of Sales fails to work, with the following message at the top of the report window: This is because your copy of the ValuePRO website has not been added to the trusted sites zone, or the trusted sites zone has not had the Enable XSS Filter disabled. See section 1 and/or section 2 of this document for guidance on how to resolve this problem. B. Job cards or other windows do not open ValuePRO requires the pop up blocker to be turned off for your website so that it is able to launch different windows for editing jobs and rendering reports. If you see a message like the one below it means IE8 is blocking the pop up windows from opening: Please refer to section 4 of this document for configuring the pop up blocker. C. You are repeatedly asked to activate your workstation ValuePRO needs to be able to store a cookie on your computer when you activate your workstation so that it knows what computer you are trying to log in from. If your internet explorer temporary files folder is full, it will be unable to store this cookie and you will be asked to activate your workstation again. Please follow the steps in section 3 for configuring your temporary files. Also check your virus scanning software isn t set to clear your cookies or temporary internet files when a scan is run on your computer if it deletes the workstation activation cookie you will need to re activate again.
Appendix I: Troubleshooting IE8 Problems D. IE8 tells you it can t display the webpage If you encounter a problem using ValuePRO and IE8 reports that it can t display the webpage, in a similar style message to the one shown below, it means your browser is set to show friendly HTTP error messages. If this happens and you report the problem to Support, the friendly error message is of no use as it doesn t actually tell us what was happening at the time of the error. Please follow the steps in section 5 of this document to ensure the correct style of error message is reported and remember to include a screen shot if possible of the error message when reporting to Support.
