1 User Instructions for the KITS ios Mobile Application This document outlines the steps required to install the KITS ios application on a mobile device (iphone, ipad, or ipod Touch) with wireless connectivity and utilize the device to collect real-time trip data. The mobile application can be used while travelling by vehicle, bus, or bicycle as well as by pedestrians and is capable of collecting real-time location, speed, direction, and elevation information. The KITS Mobile website is used in conjunction with the application to display real-time trip data collected by the device. The website also contains several analytical tools that give the user the ability to view trip results in a number of different ways. NOTE: Using a mobile device while operating a vehicle is dangerous and illegal in many states. The KITS Mobile application should not be used while operating a vehicle or any other mode of transportation. Users should only initiate or conclude a vehicle trip while the vehicle is safely in park and never while the vehicle is in motion. Installing or Updating the KITS Mobile ios Application 1) The KITS Mobile application can be installed on any ios device directly from the KITS Mobile website. Before installing KITS Mobile, any previous version of KITS Mobile should be removed from the device. To delete a previous version, locate the icon on the desktop, and press on the icon until all the icons on the screen begin to shake. An X will appear in the upper corner of the icon. Select the X in order to delete the application. 2) The website can be accessed by navigating to the following URL address from the device browser: Page 1

2 3) On the KITS Mobile website, select the link Download the KITS Mobile app, which is located at the top of the page. 4) After selecting the link to download the KITS Mobile app, a window will appear on the screen requesting confirmation from the user that the application is to be installed on the mobile device; select the Install button. The application will now be installed on the device. Page 2

3 KITS Mobile Website Account Setup 1) Before using the KITS ios Mobile application on a mobile device, a user account must be created through the KITS Mobile website. The website can be accessed by navigating to the following URL address in any web browser: 2) If using a mobile device, the website may not appear like the image above. If that is so, select View Full Site, located under the red Sign In bar of the mobile website. The website should now resemble the image above. On the KITS Mobile Website within the Sign In window, select the link Register here to begin the registration of a new account. 3) After selecting the link to register a new account, the new user must then complete all of the fields in the form to register the account. The following information is required for each new KITS Mobile user: User ID (individual user address) Password (minimum length of six characters) User Group - Select your group from the drop down menu, or if the appropriate group is not found, choose the New User option and KHA. 4 4) Once all fields have been completed, click on the Create User button located immediately below the Account Information section to create the account. 5) Immediately after the account is created, the user will be redirected to the View Trips page of the KITS Mobile website. Trip data may not be immediately available; a member of the group must complete at least one trip using the KITS Mobile application before trip data is available through the website. 5 Using The KITS Mobile ios Application 1) To begin using the KITS Mobile application, scroll to and select the KITS Mobile icon (as pictured below) located within the Launchpad. After selecting the icon, a notification will appear to confirm you trust the app developer. Select the Trust button to launch the application. 2) The KITS Mobile application includes a location based map. By default, the app opens to a map displaying the continental USA. A window may appear requesting permission for the application to access the user s location; if this occurs, select the Allow button. The app will then zoom in to the user s location. Page 5

6 NOTE: The user must allow the application to access the user s location. The KITS Mobile application cannot be used to collect trip data if this permission has not been granted by the user. 3) The user is now ready to begin collecting trip data. Before beginning a trip, the user should select the Settings icon at the top left of the screen, and update the route number and user ID as needed. The user should enter the same address (User ID) used when the user s KITS Mobile account was created. The Route should be the numerical value associated with a configured route on the Kits Mobile website. If the route is not yet configured, an arbitrary temporary numeric identifier can be substituted and later changed through the website. The Route value can be used to group the trip on the KITS Mobile website, and can provide extra features for configured routes in some graphing components. Select Done from the top left corner of the screen. While stopped, begin the trip by touching the Start Trip button located near the top right corner of the screen. Page 6

7 4) When the trip is finished and the vehicle is in park, touch the Stop button located near the top right corner of the screen to end the trip. Page 7

8 5) Ending the trip will direct the user to a screen that will enable the user to enter details about the trip that was just completed. The user has the option to specify the occurrence of an incident, weather conditions, and any notes to describe the trip. Select Done located in the top left corner of the screen when finished. 6) Trip data may now be viewed in a basic Speed vs Time graphical format through the KITS Mobile application. To access this graph, select the View Trips button from the top menu bar. Signing in should lead to a list view of all trips completed by the user. Click on one trip and select View Graph. 7) The trip route may also be viewed on a map through the app. In the View Trips section, select Map at the top of the screen. The screen will display pins for the start points of the user s trips. If multiple trips began in the same area, they may be represented by a single pin which expands to a cluster once selected. When the pin for one trip is selected, it will offer options to View Graph or View Trip Points. View Trip Points will display the path traveled on a map view. 8) Real-time user trip data will now be available for review on the KITS Mobile website. The website also contains analysis tools that give the user the ability to analyze the trip data in a number of different ways. 9 Multi-touch Gestures for Viewing a Trip Graph Trip Graphs are one way to visualize and compare trip information. A Speed vs Time graph may be found in the app through the View Trips, and many other options can be found on the Kits Mobile Website, in Reports. Accessing these graphs from an ios device may require the use of multi-touch gestures, which are described below. 1) To view details of a particular data point, hold one finger on the graph until a green vertical line appears; data details will appear at the top of the screen near the green line. Move left or right to navigate to the data points of interest. 2) To zoom into a section for greater detail, pinch out with two fingers around the area of interest. To zoom out for a bigger picture view, pinch in with two fingers. 3) To pan across the graph, swipe three fingers to the side.
