Solving Induction Machine Conclusions Description This document gives a brief description of how to use the Ansys Electronics Desktop export feature in Motor-CAD to export a machine model for 2D Transient Electromagnetic Modelling in Ansys Electronics Desktop. A vbs file is created which when run in Ansys Electronics Desktop creates and solves the electromagnetic model. This export is available for BPM, BPMOR, SYNCREL and IM machine types. This tutorial will concentrate on the export of a BPM electromagnetic model to Ansys Electronics Desktop.

2 2. Preparing the Motor-CAD model The model should be created in Motor-CAD with the necessary geometry, drive, winding pattern and materials. In this example we will use the default BPM machine. Page 2 of 19

3 3. Creating the Ansys Electronic Desktop VBS file From the Motor-CAD menu, select File->Geometry Export to display the geometry export dialog. Select the Ansys Maxwell option and select a location for the generated script file. Page 3 of 19

4 Enter a name for the script file that will be generated: Then select to create the script file: Page 4 of 19

5 The generated script includes all the information necessary for Ansys Electronics Desktop to recreate the Motor-CAD E-Magnetic model. Page 5 of 19

6 4. Running the VBS script in Ansys Electronics Desktop The script generated can now be run in Ansys Electronics Desktop. The generated script starts a new project so it is recommended that any existing projects are closed in Ansys Electronics Desktop before running the script. From the main menu, select Tools > Run Script. Select the generated script from the dialog. Page 6 of 19

7 Now select the script file that has been generated by Motor-CAD: The script can now be run and the machine model will be created and solved in Ansys Electronics Desktop. Page 7 of 19

8 5. Ansys Model Details The aim of the model export is that Ansys Electronics Desktop will allow more detailed analysis of the machine model. In this section will explain the Ansys model setup that has been done from Motor-CAD. i. Geometry The geometry is exported directly from Motor-CAD. Note: at present the transfer of dxf geometries imported into Motor-CAD are not supported. Where possible symmetry is used to reduce the model size. The geometry can be viewed by clicking on the model item in the tree as shown below: Page 8 of 19

9 ii. Motion Definition The rotor is defined to have rotational motion as shown below. The initial rotor position is set so that the rotor pole is aligned with the stator pole. Page 9 of 19

10 iii. Winding Pattern The winding pattern in the Ansys model has been created to match that in Motor-CAD: Page 10 of 19

11 iv. Magnetisation Directions The magnetisation directions are set up as shown below: Page 11 of 19

12 v. Materials The materials have been automatically created in Ansys and assigned to the regions: Page 12 of 19

13 vi. Solving The model has been set up to rotate the machine at the speed specified in Motor-CAD. The parameters defined are shown below: The model is solved when the script is run. Page 13 of 19

18 The model can be modified as required and then re-solved using the Analyze All option shown below: 6. Induction Machine Similarly induction machine models from Motor-CAD can be exported to Ansys Electronics Desktop as shown below: Page 18 of 19

19 7. Conclusions This tutorial has shown how an electromagnetic machine model in Motor-CAD can be exported to Ansys Electronics Desktop. The results of the model compare well between Motor-CAD and Ansys Electronics Desktop. This model in Ansys can then be further developed by the user for more detailed analysis of the machine design.
