1 Using Cloud Apps Phil Davis What is the Cloud? The Cloud describes computers that are located somewhere that you are not! You communicate with them using a network. Ordinary folks have been using the cloud ever since we plugged in our first dial-up modems. The geeks among us were talking to the cloud from the day we gave up our beloved IBM punch cards! Terminology Big Iron Big Iron -- monster computers locked away in a climatecontrolled room and only accessible by trained acolytes. Distributed Servers -- smaller computers, sometimes clustered together, may or may not be managed." Server Farm -- a large collection of very small computers locked away in a climate-controlled room and only accessible by trained acolytes. Personal Computing Devices (PCD) -- any computer device that you can control, touch, feel, curse at, and break. Includes laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
