1 FIRMWARE UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS CHARGER/DISCHARGER/CYCLER/BALANCER SYSTEM FIRMWARE UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS 1

2 IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING WHAT FIRMWARE TO INSTALL: Previously you were required to track the version of firmware your TP820CD originally had installed. This is no longer required and there is now only one version of firmware to update all TP820CD units. The most current version firmware is v4.34 TPRC CUI and Drivers If you have installed any previous versions of the Thunder Power CUI it must be deleted along with any other version of Silicon Labs CP210X USB to UART Bridge software and drivers. If this is your first install disregard and go to Preparing to Update TP820CD instructions. You must download the new CUI which is v3.1 and driver from the web site. Remove process: To remove the Thunder Power CUI program from your computer go to Programs and Features in your control panel. The program will be listed as Thunder Power CUI or 1.0. Highlight and delete. Also while you re there remove the Silicon Labs CP210X USB to UART Bridge software. At this point it will ask you to restart your computer. You will now need to and re start your computer. After you have removed the files and restarted the computer you are ready to Prepare to Update the TP820CD. Items Needed 1) Thunder Power RC TP820CD 2) Standard USB /Mini USB Cable (Not Supplied) WARNINGS: DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS FOR INSTALLING NEW FIRMWARE TO YOUR TP820CD NEVER LOSE POWER, UNPLUG THE CHARGER OR ATTEMPT TO STOP THE PROCESS DURING THE FIRMWARE TRANSFER PROCESS. NEVER HAVE A BATTERY CONNECTED TO THE CHARGER WHILE UPDATING THE CHARGER FIRMWARE. Files you will need to download Thunder Power RC Charger User Interface (CUI).ZIP File CP210x_VCP_Windows Driver FIRMWARE UPDATE V4.34 FOR USB.ZIP File Thunder Power RC TP820CD Calibration Instructions Preparing to Update TP820CD Download Thunder Power RC CUI2.rar file and unzip the file. You will need a zip extraction file program to do this. WinZip is the most popular. Follow the extraction file instructions and save the file to your computer. Run/Install the Thunder Power RC CUI.exe file If you receive the Publisher Unknown Driver Warning, please reference driver installation on your computer to install the driver or reference Driver Installation below. Follow on screen installation instructions 2

3 o Check box during process to place icon on your desktop Next you will need to install the driver (see driver installation below) Once the driver is installed you can then proceed to the next step. Click on Desktop Icon or go to your start menu to locate Thunder Power RC CUI. This will open the software on your computer Download and save to your computer the firmware v4.3 (this will update all TP820CDs from v3.7 & v3.9), updated 10/24/2012. Installing Firmware Update to TP820CD 1. You will need to extract the CP210x drivers that we asked you to download. You will need a zip extraction file program to do this. WinZip is the most popular. Follow the extraction file instructions and save the file to your computer. 2. Go ahead and run the driver install program. 3. Connect USB Cable to charger and computer 4. You should see a message that the computer is installing and attaching the driver to the charger. Once this is completed the USB connected light will turn from red to green. 5. Once the USB Connected light turns green, go ahead and connect the charger to your power source. You should see the main screen on the charger change to Update Software Mode and the Charger Connected light should turn from Red to Green. This can take up to 1 min to happen. 3

4 Now that the indicator has turned green for the Connection Status beside both the USB Connected and Charger Connected on Thunder Power RC CUI interface as seen below outlined in yellow: 6. Press Select the Update File This will prompt you to locate the Firmware file on your computer that you downloaded from ThunderPowerRC.com as the version Firmware update. This will have a.tp extension. Go ahead and select the file. You will get an install update message as seen below you will need to select OK 4

5 Status on your computer will now update to read Transferring.XX% WARNING: DURING THE TRANSFERRING UPDATE PROCESS DO NOT LOSE POWER, DO NOT UNPLUG CABLE FROM COMPUTER OR CHARGER. YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE OK STATUS UNDER THE SELECT FILE UPDATE. Once the progress count has reached the end it will state 100% Complete Do Not do anything. Next you will see the message Checking This is important as the program is making sure the software was installed in the right location and all of it was transferred. This will take as long as the upload took to transfer. When all is checked you will see OK At this time you can unplug the USB cable. The charger should re boot itself. If it does not re boot go ahead and unplug the power and power back up the charger. 5

6 OK Congratulations, you have now successfully updated your TP820CD with the new firmware. You are now able to use your TP820CD as outlined in the instruction manual. At this time you can follow the instruction for calibrating your charger. Driver Installation When connecting your TP820CD to the computer with a USB cord for the first time, you may be required to install drivers for the USB to UART. These are the on screen messages you may receive after plugging in the TP820CD to the computer: Select Locate and install driver software: 6

7 You may also see an indicator showing the driver software is being installed as seen below: If a driver cannot be located on your computer, you will see a message similar to below. Please select I don t have a disc. Show me other options. 7

8 If a suitable driver is not located on your computer, you will get a message similar to the one below. If you get this message please select Check for a solution Provided a suitable driver was not located you will receive a message similar to the one below. Please select check online for a solution now. 8

9 You computer will provide this message once successfully finding the driver by searching online. Please select Click to download and install the new driver from the Silicon Laboratories Inc. website as seen below. If a suitable driver is still not located you will get this message: 9
