SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 3 Features Summary Feature Available Starting in Version Custom Global Quantities Types Special parameters at the Project level whose values can be automatically applied to corresponding work element values throughout your estimate. Pricing Margin and Units New pricing parameters make it possible to automatically determine a selling price based on the specified margin. Charts New graphics package with expanded display options. Architecture Design Work Elements Algorithms The Business Rules parameters have been renamed to Algorithms to better reflect their range of applicability: Business Rules Parameters (Version 2.3.9)
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 4 Algorithms Parameters (Version ) Modeling & Estimation Enhancements SEER-SYS 2.3 has some important updates to the model. These changes are reflected in the combination of knowledge bases, labor standards and math changes. Flexible Export The following Flexible Export outputs are new: Pricing Flexible Export now contains a PRICING section (listed below MULTI CURRENCY SUMMARY under Available Outputs). Pricing outputs are computed by applying the new Pricing Margin inputs to SEER-SYS Cost outputs. See Pricing Margin and Units in this document for more information. The PRICING Flexible Export outputs are: PRICING Total Cost Per Unit Project Cost Per Unit Ongoing Support Cost Per Unit PRICE Total Price Total Labor Price Total Material Price Total Price Per Unit
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 5 Total Project Price Per Unit Total Ongoing Support Price Per Unit Project Total Price Project Labor Price Project Material Price Ongoing Support Total Price Ongoing Support Labor Price Ongoing Support Material Price MARGIN Total Margin Total Labor Margin Total Material Margin Project Total Margin Project Labor Margin Project Material Margin Ongoing Support Total Margin Ongoing Support Labor Margin Ongoing Support Material Margin Pricing Margin and Units The new Pricing parameters (on the Economic Factors tab) make it possible to automatically determine a selling price based on the specified margin. Pricing is supported by two new reports, one for individual work elements or rollups, and one at the WBS level. Pricing Margin The Pricing Margin parameters allow you to set the percentages used to compute price from estimated cost. Price and related price per unit are reported on the Pricing and WBS Pricing reports. The relationship between cost as price is: Price = Cost / (1 - Margin) Margin can range from 0% to 99.99%. Margin inputs can be used to support pricing exercises and determine what a selling price should be with given margin objectives. Project Labor Cost Margin: Margin percentage applied to project labor cost. Project Material Cost Margin: Margin percentage applied to project material cost. Ongoing Support Labor Cost Margin: Margin percentage applied to ongoing support labor cost. Ongoing Support Material Cost Margin: Margin percentage applied to ongoing support material cost.
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 6 Pricing Units Units can be used to compute a cost and price per unit on the Pricing report, when appropriate. Units are optional; when you do not enter a unit, SEER-SYS will report unit quantity, costs, and prices on the Pricing report as zero, but the estimate will not otherwise be affected. Item Unit Description Units Description Enter the unit description; it will apply to the current work element or rollup only. Enter the unit quantity as an integer; it will apply to the current work element or rollup only. Units can be linked to a parameter value or Global Quantity. New Pricing Reports Pricing Margin and Units Inputs There are two new pricing reports: a detailed, element-level report, and a summary WBS report. Pricing Report The Pricing Report is available at both the work element and project/rollup levels. It shows cost vs. price for all costs based on a user specified margin. it also reports the price per unit. Price is computed as Cost / (1-Margin). Cost totals are the sum of the lower level costs, and net margin is then computed as (Cost Price)/Cost. Cost per unit is computed as Cost/Units. Pricing report is always in the selected element's currency.

WBS Pricing Report Global Quantities The following enhancements have been added to SEER-SYS's Global Quantities feature: Expanded and Improved Custom Quantities The number of Custom Global Quantities which can be created for a project has expanded from 50 to 200. It is also now possible to set the data entry type for each Custom Quantity in the Add/Edit Global Quantity dialog box. Eight data types are available: Float Triplet Integer Triplet Percent Triplet Boolean Float Single Integer Single Percent Single Date The triplet data types take Least-Likely-Most inputs. The single data types take single-value inputs. Boolean Custom Quantities have Yes/No radio buttons.
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 10 Date Custom Quantities allow dates to be entered manually or selected from a pop-up calendar. The default data type is Float Triplet. Custom Global Quantities in older SEER-SYS projects will be converted to Float Triplet. Custom Quantity Type Selection New Global Quantity Context Menu Options Three options have been added to the right-click menu for Global Quantities: Rename Selected Global Quantity Item Move Global/ Quantity Up Move Global/ Quantity Down Local Quantities Right-Click Menu for Global Quantities The changes described above for Global Quantities also apply to Local Quantities, with the following exception:
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 11 The number of Custom Local Quantities which can be created for each work element is still 50. Expression Editor The Expression Editor includes one new function (DateOffset()), along with some changes in the way that operators and functions are selected. We have included full descriptions of current operators and functions (with arguments and examples where appropriate) for reference. Operators, Punctuation, and Functions Selection The Operators, Punctuation, and Functions section of the Expression editor has changed. There is now one row of buttons for the most commonly-used selections. Below that row is a pull-down menu for selecting other functions. It currently lists DateOffset(), sin(), cos(), and tan(). To the right of the list is the Insert button; after you select a function from the list, click on Insert to insert it into the expression. To the right of the insert button is a text box which displays a description of the selected function, along with information about how it is used. New Function: DateOffset() Expression Editor With New Selection Options The Expression editior function list icludes one new function: DateOffset(), which can be used to produce a date that is offset from a base date. This function, along with existing operators, punctuation, and functions, is described in the list below:
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 12 Operator and Function Descriptions Below is a description of all operators, punctuation, and functions currently available for use in expressions: Item Description + Button. Standard addition operator; adds the right side to the left side. - Button. Standard subtraction operator; subtracts the right side from the left side. x Button. Standard multiplication operator; multiplies the right side by the left side. Button. Standard division operator; divides the left side by the right side. ^ Button. Exponent. Clicking on this button adds a caret in parentheses to the expression: (^). If you enter quantities on both sides of the caret, the quantity on the left side will be raised to the power of the quantity on the right side: (3^2) raises 3 to the power of 2.?: Button. If-Then-Else. When you click on the button, the following string of characters appears in the expression: ()? () : () This forms the skeleton of an If-Then-Else statement, like this: (If)? (Then) : (Else) If the proposition in the first set of parentheses is true, the result will be the contents of the second set of parentheses; otherwise, the result will be the contents of the third parentheses. The if proposition can contain global quantities, parameters, and numbers, along with the following logical operators: == Equals!= Does not equal > Greater than < Less than >= Greater than or equal to <= Less than or equal to && And Or For example, suppose that you use the following expression for the Switches parameter in an Infrastructure Services work element: (@Quantum Repeaters@<2)? (3) : (@Quantum Repeaters@*4) It says that if the custom global quantity Quantum Repeaters is less than 2, Switches will be set to 3; otherwise, the quantity of Switches is Quantum Repeaters times 4. Now consider this more complex example: (@Quantum Repeaters@<2 && _Routers_<=1)? (3) : ((@Quantum Repeaters@*4) + _Routers_) It says that if Quantum Repeaters is less than 2, AND if the quantity in the Routers parameter is 1 or less, Switches is set to 3; otherwise (i.e., if
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 13 there are more Quantum Repeaters AND more Routers than the quantities indicated), otherwise, Switches is set to Quantum Repeaters times 4 plus the number of Routers. () Button. Parentheses. Enter an expression in the parentheses just as you would in any mathematical expression. exp Button. The exponential function. When you click on the button, exp () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be e raised to the power of that number. x Button. The square root function. When you click on the button, sqrt () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be the square root of that number. log Button. The log function. When you click on the button, log () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be the log of that number. ln Button. The natural log function. When you click on the button, ln () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be the natural log of that number. DateOffset() List. This function produces a date which is offset from a base date by a specified quantity of time in the given unit of time measurement. The base date, time quantity, and time unit of measure are all entered as arguments: DateOffset(Base Date,Time Quantity,Time Unit of Measure) The Base Date can be any date-format Work Element Parameter, Global Quantity, or Local Quantity. You cannot use a literal date string, however. The Time Quantity can be a literal numeric value, or a numeric Work Element Parameter, Global Quantity, or Local Quantity. A positive Time Quantity value results in a lag-time offset (after the Base Date). The Time Unit of Measure can be Days, Weeks, Months, or Years, entered in the following format: #Days#, #Weeks#, #Months#, #Years#. <p>dateoffset() can be used to create schedule relationships not covered by existing schedule parameters. For example, to set a date that lags after a globally-declared Project Start Date by a check-in time that is also declared globally, you could enter this expression: DateOffset(@Project Start Date (Global)@,@Material Check In Time@,#Days#) If the project Start Date is 4/19/2017, and the Material Check In Time value is 5, the resulting offset date will be 4/24/2017. sin List. The sine function. When you click on the button, sin () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be the sine of that number. cos List. The cosine function. When you click on the button, cos () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be the cosine of that number.
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 14 tan List. The tangent function. When you click on the button, tan () appears in the expression. When you enter a number in the parentheses, the result will be the tangent of that number. New Load Individual Knowledge Base Interface Estimate / Load Individual Knowledge Base now allows you to select individual work elements when applying the changes. In earlier versions of SEER-SYS, you could load Knowledge Bases either for the current work element, for the current work element plus subordinates, for all work elements, or for all work elements of the specified types; there was no way to select work elements on an individual basis. New Work Element Selection Option The new interface replaces has two options: Current Work Element Only, and Select Multiple Work Elements to Change. Load Individual Knowledge Base Dialog Box Below is a complete description of the revised Load Individual Knowledge Base dialog box: Item Element Types Description Select the work element type from the pull-down list. The available Knowledge Bases will be based on the work element type that you pick.

You can then paste the commands into other applications such as Microsoft Excel. Alternatively you can use the Run Commands From Clipboard (found on the Tools menu) to paste a copy of the Export Commands data back into your SEER-SYS project. Thus you can now copy and paste multiple work elements. Commands can be pasted back into the same project or into other projects. Using this feature can help you to quickly build up project files with repetitive work element structures. Selecting this option will bring up the Save As dialog box. You can then enter a File name and save the template in a text-file format. Note: you need to type the file extension.txt after the file name in order for the file to be saved as a text file. Optional. Selecting this option will include Knowledge Bases with your export commands. Optional. Selecting this option will include all parameters with your export commands. Only export inputs that have been modified by the user. The parameter list indicates user inputs by changing the input font to bold. This does not include inputs from KBases. Note: if you do not select any of the Output With options, only the commands required to recreate the work element structure will be exported. When you select a rollup, all of its subordinate work elements will also be selected. Work element and parameter notes will be included in the export.note: Exported notes will be text-only, without formatting. Exports the server mode commands based on the current list's settings. Click this button only after you have carefully selected your options. The export commands dialog box will close, and a progress bar will appear to illustrate the status of the export commands. 22 SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 22 Graphical User Interface Updates Reference Pushpin in WBS Now, when a work element has a reference set using Estimate/Set Reference, a pushpin icon will appear next to it in the work element list. Program Enhancements Scenarios The Set Reference Pushpin Icon New LoadFromScenario Interactive Mode The LoadFromScenario Server Mode command now includes an optional Interactive mode, set using the "Option=" argument: Option=Interactive The user will participate interactively in browsing/selecting the scenario file and in resolving queries. Option=UseDefault There is no user interaction. The program will make all decisions based on defaults and "best match" criteria. Server Mode Command Updates The following Server Mode commands are new with SEER-SYS 2.3: LoadFromScenario now includes an optional interactive mode. See Scenarios, above, for details. SEER-SYS will now allow you to comment out a command by using a semi-colon ( ; ) at the beginning of the command.
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 23 For example, SEER-SYS will ignore the following lines when processing server mode commands: ;This line is a comment. The line below is also commented out. ;WBSCreate Main Server Additional Items 2 Note that the semi-colon must be the first character in the command; when it is present, the entire line will be treated as a comment. Maintenance Updates and Useful Information Shipping Files The SEER for SYS Server Mode Details.xls has been updated to include the new server mode commands. Please see Server Mode Commands Updates for more details. The SEER-SYS Input worksheet.xls has been updated to include the Knowledge Base changes and parameter changes. Miscellaneous SEER-DB SEER-DB now supports the following alternative ODBC drivers: SQL Server Native Client and ODBC Driver for SQL Server. Recently introduced Fiscal-Year Estimate and Pricing outputs are now saved to SEER-DB. SEER-DB now supports the Telco/Carriage work element. Other Enhancements The %UserProfile% environment variable can now be used with all path options in the Settings.INI file. When an Additional Item is copied and pasted, the Expression, Lock, Hide, and Tag settings are now pasted into the target Additional Item. Catalog Items for Additional Items work elements now include a Notes column. Note text appears in the Parameter Notes field for the selected item. In the Unlock and Unhide Parameters dialog boxes, only those work elements which have parameters that are currently locked (or hidden) are selectable; all other parameters have grayed-out checkboxes. In addition, work elements with locked or hidden parameters are highlighted for easy visibility. The Tools / Review Parameter Expression dialog box now includes a Copy Button. The Copy option always copies the entire list; selecting individual parameters and expressions has no effect on what is copied.
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 24 Monte Carlo calculation at the work element level no longer needs to be repeated when the user selected another element, then re-selects the original element. The Economic Factors Knowledge Base has updated labor rates. Fixes The ProjectCreate and WBSCreate server mode commands now truncate Project Name and Work Element Name arguments longer than 95 characters. Previously, using a name longer than 95 characters with either server mode command would cause the application to crash. Fixed a problem where deleting a work element that referenced a Global Quantity, then deleting the Global Quantity itself would cause the application to crash. Selecting a work element in the Import Scenario dialog box now automatically selects all of its parent rollups. Project Material Cost is no longer included in the Hours by Fiscal Year report. The Hours and Cost by Fiscal Year reports share the same structure, so the Hours by Fiscal Year report includes Project Material and Ongoing Support Material columns, but the values for those columns are now set to zero in the Hours report. Maintenance Release Miscellaneous For Project and Rollup work elements, the Quick Estimate and other reports will now list start and end dates as (not set) if each of the subordinate work elements fit at least one of the following conditions: o They are excluded using Estimate / Exclude Elements from Rollups/Totals, or o They are Additional Items, and none of the start dates for individual items apply to the project schedule, or none apply to ongoing support - only the start/end dates which do apply will be shown, and the other dates will have the (not set) designation. In the Expression Editor, dates can now be used for comparison in the If-Then-Else structure: For example, Date_1>Date_2 will be true if Date_1 is later than Date_2. The Unlock Parameters and Unhide Parameters dialog boxes now include an explanation of the unlocking/unhiding process: "Only locked parameters are shown. Checked parameters will be unlocked. Unchecking a parameter will keep it locked." (With similar language for the Unhide Parameters dialog box.)
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 25 if you change any Knowledge Bases for a work element in the Create/Modify Work Element dialog box, the program will now ask you if you want to reload all Knowledge Bases (the default behavior for other SEER estimation programs), or only the Knowledge Bases which you changed (the original default for SEER-SYS): The "License expired" and "License about to expire" warning dialog boxes now allow the user to browse and select a license in an alternate location. This makes it possible to change the license path so that it points to the current license without having administrative privileges. Scenarios can now be saved to and loaded from the SEER Enterprise Database. The File menu includes the new command, Load Scenario(s) from Database, and the name of the
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 26 Load from Scenario command has been changed to Load Scenario: Fixes A new command, LoadScenarioFromDatabase, has been added to Server Mode to support this option. The Server Mode AddKbase and SaveKbase commands now add and save work element notes correctly. Reloading Knowledge Bases now overwrites user inputs correctly. Time-phased charts now show the correct month labels in all time zones. The Description field for Custom Global and Local Quantities is now limited to 63 characters. This fixes a compatibility problem with the SEER Enterprise Database. Long Parameter notes now wrap properly (rather than being cut off at the end of the line) when the Inputs with Notes report is printed. Blank properties values exported using Flexible Export no longer cause alignment problems for later items. Global Quantities now update correctly regardless of parameter ID number. Locked Global Quantities can no longer be deleted. Custom Global and Local Quantities with the Percent Triplet data type now display the correct values. Previously, entering a valid value greater than % would result in an incorrect and invalid negative value. Parameter Scenario queries no longer run twice when the project includes a Global Quantity. Scenarios queries are now reset correctly after a Global or Local Quantity has been deleted. Fixed a potential problem with bad values when loading a scenario that includes multiple Custom Global Quantities which have been re-positioned and have mixed data types. Fixed a bug where collapsing the first report or chart group in the Choose Available Reports and Charts dialog box then clicking on OK would cause a crash.
SEER-SYS 2.3 Release Notes Page 27 Upgrade Information Installation You do not have to uninstall SEER-SYS 2.2 to install SEER-SYS 2.3. In fact, it is recommended that you maintain your SEER-SYS 2.2 installation. We do recommend, however, that you uninstall any beta release versions you have installed. File Upconvert Your SEER-SYS files from 2.2 can be used in this 2.3 version. However project files saved in 2.3 will no longer be compatible with earlier versions. It is recommended that backups of your project files are made before you use them in Compatibility Projects saved in version 2.3.xx are not compatible with version 2.2. If you are using version 2.3.xx and need to send a project to someone who is using an earlier version, you can use the Export Commands feature to save a server mode script file that can be used to recreate the project in earlier versions of SEER-SYS. A spreadsheet utility is available to help with using Export Commands. Please contact Galorath technical support ( or support@galorath.com) to request the file or if you would like assistance. 2.3 Compatibility Projects saved in version can be opened in earlier versions of SEER-SYS 2.3.xx. Display Configuration SEER-SYS 2.3 is best viewed with a 1024 x 768 (or higher) screen resolution. Estimate Compatibility You will see an incompatible version message when opening projects saved in a newer version of the application. Specific areas of estimate compatibility are described here. Updated Rates Knowledge Base labor rates have been updated to 2017.
