Capturig still images You ca capture still images from i.lik compatible devices. To capture still images, proceed as follows: 1 Lauch Smart Capture from the Start meu, i Programs / Smart Capture / Smart Capture. The Fider widow appears, displayig the image of the subject. 2 Adjust the focus o the subject you wat to shoot. 3 Click the Capture butto i the Smart Capture widow. Before you ca start usig your iteral modem, or each time you use your modem while travellig, make sure that the coutry of the active locatio defied i Phoe ad Modem Optios matches the coutry you are dialig from. To cofigure your modem, proceed as follows: 1 Click Start, poit to Settigs, ad click Cotrol Pael. 2 Double-click Phoe ad Modem Optios. 3 Double-click the curretly selected locatio o the Dialig Rules tab. Before applyig ew coutry settigs, please make sure your phoe lie is discoected from your VAIO otebook. Chagig your widow desig You ca chage the widow desig of SOY software compatible with UI Desig Selector. To chage the widow desig usig UI Desig Selector, proceed as follows: 18 1 Click Start, poit Settigs, the click Cotrol Pael. 2 Double-click UI Desig Selector. The UI Desig Selector dialog box appears. 3 Click o << or >> ad select the desig you like. 4 Click Apply. The UI Desig Selector widow desig chages, to give you a preview of the desig you chose for the SOY software. 5 To try aother desig, click o << or >>. 6 Click OK, oce you are satisfied with your choice. UI Desig Selector disappears ad chages the widow desig of SOY software as you selected.

To set up your otebook with Soy otebook Setup, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto o the Widows taskbar. 2 I Programs, select Soy otebook Setup. The Basic widow appears; you ca the ehace the features by clickig the Basic / Advaced tab. 3 Select the tab for the item you wat to chage. 4 Oce fiished, click OK. This dialog box cotais the followig tabs: Tab About This Computer Priter Iitial Settig Touchpad Power O Password Eable Ports Basic/Advaced Descriptio Displays system iformatio, icludig memory capacity, serial umber, ad BIOS versio. Selects priter port mode settigs. Selects the drive ad device order you wish to use for loadig the operatig system. You ca specify the hard drive as well as other drives iserted ito your computer. You ca chage the volume of the souds while the operatig system is loadig. Whe you coect a optioal mouse to your computer, you ca disable your touchpad. You ca also customize your mouse settigs usig the mouse utility. Sets the password to secure your computer. Disables port release resources to the system. The automatic power maagemet selects the most advatageous profiles, or lets you customize the profiles you choose, accordig to your ow eeds, with the goal of exteded battery life. PowerPael has the followig features: Automatic Profile Selectio (APS) based o the curretly active applicatio; Ability to select special Power Profiles maually from the meu; Ability to edit ad create ew profiles; Ability to display detailed battery iformatio; It works i harmoy with your Widows settigs. Activatig PowerPael Whe startig the computer, the PowerPael ico appears i the system tray by default. Whe poitig o the PowerPael ico, you will see a tooltip with the active power maagemet profile. You ca select a power profile from the meu or a power maagemet profile by right-clickig this ico. You ca use the PowerPael toolbar as well: To use the PowerPael toolbar, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the taskbar at the bottom of the scree. 2 Select Toolbars from the shortcut meu, the click PowerPael. PowerPael appears o the taskbar (you ca chage it ito a floatig widow by draggig ad droppig it o your desktop). 3 Click o the first i the toolbar to ope the Profile meu. 20

Whe you use the battery pack as power source, your system selects the Maximum Battery Life power maagemet profile by default. If you select a differet power maagemet profile while usig battery power, the same profile will be automatically selected the ext time you use the battery pack to power your computer. Activatig power maagemet profiles PowerPael provides several predefied power maagemet profiles. Each profile cosists of a group of specific power maagemet settigs that are desiged to meet specific power maagemet goals, ragig from maximum power maagemet to o power maagemet. Mai preset profiles Ico Descriptio Maximum Battery Life Provides power savig features to give you maximum battery life ad good performace. It reduces the brightess of the display ad puts it ito Stadby mode after a specified time period. Maximum Performace Provides the best system performace while still coservig power. 21 AC Power The power maagemet state whe AC power is i use. PowerPael automatically loads the AC profile uless you disable this feature. Power Maagemet Off Turs off all power maagemet features such as Stadby ad Hiberate modes.

To select automatic profiles, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the PowerPael ico o the taskbar. 2 Select Profiles. 3 Select Automatic Profile Selectio. The backup utility helps you create a copy of the data o your hard disk. I the evet that the origial data o your hard disk is accidetally erased or overwritte, or becomes iaccessible because of a hard disk malfuctio, you ca use the copy to restore your lost or damaged data. To create a Emergecy Repair Disk, proceed as follows: 1 Click Start. 2 Poit to Programs, Accessories, the System Tools ad fially Backup. The Backup widow appears. 3 O the Tools meu, click Create a Emergecy Repair Disk. 4 Follow the istructios that appear o your scree. You will eed a blak 1,44 MB floppy disk to create a Emergecy Repair Disk. It is recommeded to recreate a Emergecy Repair Disk each time your computer udergoes major chages (ew program istallatio, ) The repair process relies o iformatio that is saved i the systemroot/repair folder. You must ot chage or delete this folder. Choosig Also back up the registry to the repair directory will save your curret registry files i a folder withi your systemroot/repair folder. The system recovery process allows you to reistall a image of the hard disk as it was whe you started usig your otebook. Perform a System Recovery i the followig cases: I the evet of a serious system crash. If you wat to modify the size of your partitios. Perform a Applicatio Recovery whe you eed to: Reistall a idividual driver if a device is ot fuctioig properly. Reistall a idividual applicatio i the case you have problems ruig it. Performig a system recovery Use this optio oly whe your system is seriously damaged, e.g., if Widows does ot work ay loger, or your PC behaves abormally, etc. The system recovery will completely reistall the origially cofigured system o your C: drive. Your D: drive data will ot be deleted if you choose to keep the same partitio settigs. If you decide to modify the size of your partitios, the existig data o both drives (C: ad D:) will be deleted. Whe performig a system recovery, you ca opt for a Stadard Recovery ad a Advaced Recovery. Whe choosig a Stadard Recovery, you leave the curret partitio sizes utouched. Whe choosig a Advaced Recovery, you ca adapt the partitio sizes. You ca oly use these product recovery CD-ROMs o the SOY otebook you purchased ad ot o ay other SOY PC or other maufacturer's PC! To perform a system recovery, your port replicator should be discoected. 30

Please ote that oly the Advaced Recovery allows you to select the size of the C: partitio whe startig a recovery. Whe recoverig your system, you also eed to choose betwee FAT32 ad TFS for the file maagemet system you wat to use. The default optio is FAT32. The Stadard Recovery always chooses FAT32.! Applyig a system recovery meas that you will lose all your data stored o your C: drive (ad your D: drive if you modify partitio settigs).! Make sure that your computer is coected to AC (ot the batteries) before you attempt a system recovery.! Whe the recovery is performed, you must remove the recovery CD-ROM from the drive before restartig the computer. If the CD-ROM is still i the drive, you will restart a recovery process. Performig a stadard system recovery To perform a stadard system recovery, proceed as follows: 1 Take the system recovery CD-ROM. 2 Tur o your computer (usig AC power oly) ad isert the system recovery CD-ROM i the CD-ROM/ DVD-ROM drive. 3 Shut dow your computer (Start/Shut Dow/Shut Dow). 4 Wait te secods. 5 Tur your computer back o. 6 O the first scree that appears, press S (Stadard). Oly the advaced recovery allows you to format your files usig either FAT32 or TFS. You ca chage your FAT32 file system to TFS at ay time. However, make sure you fully uderstad the cocept of file maagemet system uder Widows 2000 before switchig from FAT32 to aother file maagemet system. For more iformatio, carefully read the Widows 2000 documetatio ad/or ask your system or etwork admiistrator. You ca oly covert from FAT32 to TFS, but ot from TFS to FAT32. Performig a advaced system recovery To perform a advaced system recovery, proceed as follows: 1 Take the system recovery CD-ROM. 2 Tur o your computer (usig AC power oly) ad isert the system recovery CD-ROM i the CD-ROM drive. 3 Shut dow your computer. 4 Wait te secods. 5 Tur your computer back o. 6 O the first scree that appears, press A (Advaced). Select this optio oly if you eed to chage the sizes of your partitios. 2 O the ext scree, press Y to cofirm the deletio of the curret partitios. The ext scree displays a selectio of sizes for your ew C: drive. Accordig to the optio you select, the recovery process will create 1 or 2 partitios o the hard disk. 3 Cofirm your selectio o the ext scree. 4 Wait util the ew partitios are created ad the otebook reboots. 5 Press G to proceed with the system recovery. 6 Select the file system you wat to use: FAT32 or TFS. 7 Follow the istructios o the scree. 8 Whe the recovery process is fiished, remove the product recovery CD-ROM from the drive.

To perform a applicatio recovery, proceed as follows: 1 Take the last product recovery CD-ROM. 2 Tur o your computer (usig AC power oly) ad wait util Widows has booted up. 3 Isert the product recovery CD-ROM i the CD-ROM drive. 4 Ope the CD-ROM drive through Widows Explorer ad click o the Apps directory. 5 Ope the directory which correspods to the applicatio that you wat to recover. 6 Double-click the Setup program. 7 Follow the istructios i the Istaller. You must ru the last product recovery CD-ROM from Widows. The applicatio will ot ru from DOS. Whe performig a applicatio recovery, you do ot lose data o your hard disk. 34

To help you fid or restore typical drivers eeded by your pre-istalled applicatios, you ca use the last product recovery CD-ROM. To reistall a device driver, proceed as follows: 1 First check whether the driver you wat to reistall is o the last product recovery CD-ROM. Oly device drivers that are ot delivered with Widows ca be foud i the Drivers folder. 2 Check all uderlyig sub-directories for the appropriate driver. 3 ext, lauch the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard (click Start, poit to Settigs/Cotrol Pael, ad the double-click Add/Remove Hardware to istall the appropriate device). 35

37 Usig partitioed drives About the software o your Soy otebook Usig partitioed drives I My Computer or Widows Explorer, you may have oticed the availability of two drives (C: ad D:): your hard disk drive comes from the factory with 2 logical partitios: this does ot mea that your computer cotais two physical hard disks. Whe you start usig your otebook, your C: drive cotais all the files required by Widows ad other preistalled software, while the D: drive is empty. The D: drive is the ideal storage space for all your documets, especially big oes like digital motio pictures captured with DVgate. While you ca perform a system recovery ad chage the partitio settigs i order to have oe C: drive oly, this optio is ot recommeded for usig video editig applicatios like DVgate. To optimize data storage, use the C: drive to istall ew applicatios, ad save all your documets to the D: drive. Moreover, doig so will prevet the loss of your documets i the case you eed to perform a system recovery. Do ot try to add, delete, or resize partitios uless you really eed it. Chagig partitio settigs might delete all your files o the hard disk. If you eed to perform a system recovery, but do ot wat to lose all the data stored o your hard disk, copy all the files you wat to keep o the D: drive. Durig the system recovery process, choose to keep the curret partitio iformatio. Doig so will keep your D: drive uchaged after the recovery process. If you do eed to chage the size of your partitios, you ca do so by performig a system recovery. I this case, it is importat that all data o your hard disk will be deleted. If you eed to keep existig files, be sure to back them up before performig the system recovery. 36
