Wheever possible, you should attempt to take accout of the followig ergoomic cosideratios to both statioary ad portable eviromets: 12 Positio of your computer Place the computer directly i frot of you (1). Keep your forearms horizotal (2), with your wrists i a eutral, comfortable positio (3) while usig the keyboard, touchpad, or exteral mouse. Let your upper arms hag aturally at your sides. Have breaks durig sessios with your computer. Excessive use of the computer may strai muscles or tedos. Furiture ad posture Sit i a chair with good back support. 20 Usig your otebook Coectig a power source You ca use either a AC adapter or a rechargeable battery pack as a power source. Usig the AC adapter To use the AC adapter, proceed as follows: 1 Plug the cable attached to the AC adapter (1) ito the DC I coector (2) o the computer. 2 Plug oe ed of the power cord (3) ito the AC adapter. 3 Plug the other ed of the power cord ito a AC outlet. 19 Use your otebook oly with the supplied AC adapter. To discoect your otebook completely from mais voltage, uplug the AC adapter. Make sure that the socket outlet is easily accessible. Some models may be supplied with 2 power cords, respectively for a UK ad for a Cotietal power outlet. I this case, please make sure to use the power cord, which correspods to the type of your power outlet.

21 Usig your otebook Usig the battery pack You ca use a battery as a source of power. Additioal battery packs are available as a separate optio. The battery pack supplied with your computer is ot fully charged at the time of purchase. Isertig the battery pack To isert the battery, proceed as follows: 1 Move the lock lever (1) o the bottom of the computer to the Ulock positio. 2 Alig the grooves (2) ad tabs o the battery (3) with the tabs ad otches o the back of the computer, ad the slide the battery towards the computer util it clicks ito place. 3 Slide the lock lever ito the Lock positio to secure the battery o the computer. Whe the computer is directly coected to AC power ad has a battery pack iserted i the battery bay, it uses power from the AC outlet.! Make sure the cover is closed before isertig the battery pack. 20

22 Usig your otebook Chargig the battery pack To charge the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Coect the AC adapter to the computer. 2 Isert the battery pack. The computer automatically charges the battery (the battery idicator (1) light flashes i a double blik patter as the battery charges). Whe the battery is 85% full, the battery idicator light turs off. This process takes approximately 2.5 hours whe the system is off. To charge the battery completely, cotiue chargig for a additioal hour. 21 Battery idicator light status O Sigle blik Double blik Off Meaig The computer is usig battery power. The battery is ruig out of power. The battery is chargig. The computer is usig AC power. If you charge the battery whe the otebook is switched off, the chargig process will take approximately two ad a half hours. Whe the battery is ruig out of power, both the battery ad power idicators blik. Keep the battery pack i the computer while it is directly coected to AC power. The battery pack cotiues to charge while you are usig the computer. If the battery level falls below 10%, you should either attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery or shut dow your computer ad isert a fully charged battery. You ca exted battery life by chagig the power maagemet modes i the PowerPael utility.

23 Usig your otebook The battery pack supplied with your computer is a lithium io battery ad ca be recharged ay time. Chargig a partially discharged battery does ot affect battery life. The battery idicator light is o while you use the battery pack as a power source. Whe the battery life is early depleted, both the battery ad power idicator start flashig. For some software applicatios ad some peripheral devices, your computer may ot eter Hiberate mode eve whe battery life is low. To avoid loss of data whe usig battery power, you should save your data frequetly ad maually activate a power maagemet mode, such as Stadby or Hiberate. Whe the computer is directly coected to AC power ad has a battery pack iserted i the battery bay, it uses power from the AC outlet. Removig the battery pack To remove the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Tur off the computer. 2 Slide the release lever (1) to the Ulock positio ad slide the battery away from the computer. 22 You may lose data if you remove the battery pack while the computer is o ad ot coected to the AC adapter or if you remove the battery while the computer is i Stadby mode.

24 Usig your otebook Startig your otebook To start your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Hold the bottom of the computer firmly ad ope the cover Press the power butto (1) of the computer util the gree power idicator light (2) turs o. 3 If ecessary, press <F>+<F5> to adjust the brightess cotrols for the LCD display. To icrease the brightess, use the up or right arrow keys. To decrease, use the dow or left arrow keys. If you press the power butto for more tha four secods, the computer will tur off. Do ot grab the camera les whe opeig the cover, you may break the camera.

25 Usig your otebook Shuttig dow your otebook It is importat that you shut dow your computer properly so you do ot lose usaved data. To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto. 2 Click Tur Off Computer. The Tur off computer scree appears. 3 Click Tur Off. Wait for your computer to tur off automatically. The power idicator turs off. 4 Tur off ay peripherals coected to your computer. Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets or to cosider other users. If you are uable to shut dow your computer; - Close all software i use. - If applicable, remove the PC Card. To do so, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware ico i the taskbar. Select the hardware you wat to uplug ad click Stop. - Discoect ay USB devices. Press <Alt>+<F4> ad select Tur Off from the scree that appears. If this does ot work, you ca press the power butto for more tha four secods. This will shut dow the computer. This operatio may result i loss of data. If you are ot usig the computer for a short period of time, you ca save power by usig the Stadby mode. To eter Stadby mode, press the <F> ad <Esc>-keys simultaeously. Or go to the Start meu, select Tur Off Computer, ad the click o Stad By. For more details o power maagemet, see Usig power savig modes (page 53). 24

26 Usig your otebook Usig the keyboard Your keyboard is very similar to a desktop computer s, but has additioal keys that perform specific otebook-related tasks / * Eter

27 Usig your otebook Keys Escape key (1) Fuctio keys (2) Prit Scree key (3) Correctio keys (4) Descriptios The <Esc> (Escape) key is used to cacel commads. The twelve fuctio keys alog the top of the keyboard are used to perform desigated tasks. For example, i may applicatios, <F1> is the Help key. The task associated with each fuctio key may vary from oe applicatio to the other. The <Prit Scree> key takes a electroic sapshot of the scree ad moves it to the Widows Clipboard. You ca the paste the screeshot ito a documet ad prit it. The <Isert>, <Back Space> ad <Delete> keys eable you to make correctios. 26 avigatio keys (5) Operator keys (6) Applicatio key (7) umeric keypad area (8) Widows key (9) <F> key (10) These keys eable you to move the cursor o the scree. Several keys are always used with at least oe other key: <Ctrl>, <Alt>, ad <Shift>. Whe held dow with aother key, the <Ctrl> (Cotrol) ad <Alt> (Alterate) keys offer aother way to execute commads. For example, i may applicatios, istead of choosig the Save commad from a meu, you ca hold dow <Ctrl> ad press <S> (referred to as <Ctrl>+<S>). The <Shift> key is used to produce capital letters or special symbols such ad $. The Applicatio key displays a shortcut meu; pressig this key is equivalet to clickig the right mouse butto. Cotais the keys foud o a typical calculator. Use the umeric keypad area to type umbers or to perform mathematical calculatios such as additio ad subtractio. ote that you must press the <um Lock> key to activate the umeric keypad. Whe you do so, the um Lock idicator illumiates. The key with the Widows logo displays the Widows Start meu; it is equivalet to clickig the Start butto o the taskbar. The <F> key is used i combiatio with other keys to execute commads.

Displays the Search Results widow to fid a file or folder. This is equivalet to selectig Search from the Start meu Ctrl + F + M Shift + + M + R <F> + + Isert Displays the Search Results - Computers widow where you ca locate other computers. Miimizes all displayed widows. Returs all miimized widows to their previous size. Displays the Ru widow. This is equivalet to selectig Ru from the Start meu. Displays the System Properties widow. This is equivalet to double-clickig the System ico i the Cotrol Pael or to right-clickig My Computer (select Properties) from the Start meu.

Light O Off hard disk um Lock Caps Lock Scroll Lock Data is read from or writte to the hard drive. Turs o whe the umber keys i the umeric keypad are active. Turs o whe the characters appear i uppercase as you type. The <Shift> key lowers the case of typed characters whe Caps Lock is o. Turs o whe the scree scrolls differetly (depeds o the applicatio, o effect i may applicatios). The hard drive is ot beig accessed. Turs off whe the alphaumeric character keys i the keypad area are active. Turs off whe the characters appear i lowercase as you type (uless you hold dow the <Shift> key). Turs off whe the iformatio moves across the display ormally.

30 Usig your otebook Combiatios ad fuctios with the <F> key Combiatios/Feature <F>+ (ESC): Stadby <F>+ (F3): speaker switch <F> + (F4): speaker volume Fuctios Puts the system ito Stadby mode, a power maagemet state. To retur the system to the active state, press ay key. Toggles the built-i speaker o ad off. Adjusts the built-i speaker volume. To icrease volume, press <F>+<F4> ad the or. 29 To decrease volume, press <F>+<F4> ad the or. <F> + (F5): brightess cotrol Adjusts the brightess of the LCD. To icrease lightess itesity, press <F>+<F5> ad the or. To decrease light itesity, press <F>+<F5> ad the or. <F>+ / (F7)*: switch to the exteral display <F> + / (F8)* <F>+ (F12): Hiberate Toggles betwee the LCD, exteral display (coected to the moitor coector) ad both LCD ad exteral display. Toggles betwee the LCD ad both LCD ad TV. Provides for the lowest level of power cosumptio. Whe you execute this commad, the states of the system ad of the peripheral devices are writte to the hard disk ad the system power is tured off. To retur the system to its origial state, use the power switch to tur o the power. * These fuctios ca oly be used by the first user to log i. 31 Usig your otebook Usig the poitig device The stick o the keyboard is a cursor-poitig device. You ca poit to, select, drag, ad scroll objects o the scree usig the stick. 30 Actio Descriptio Poit Press the stick (1) i the appropriate directio to positio the poiter (2) o a item or object. Click Press the left butto (3) oce. Double-click Press the left butto twice. Right-click Press the right butto (4) oce. I may applicatios, this actio displays a shortcut meu. Drag Press the stick i the appropriate directio to positio the poiter o a item or object. While holdig the left butto, press the stick, the let it go where eeded.
