1 CREATING A 3D VIA MODEL IN HYPERLYNX FOR CHANNEL ANALYSIS w w w. m e n t o r. c o m

2 Creating a 3D Via Model in HyperLynx for Channel Analysis This lab will illustrate the integrated 3D via solver within HyperLynx LineSim for generating 3D via models for SERDES simulations. 1. Under Setup > Options > Directories and add the E:\HLv90_GHz_Channel_for_vlab\Channel_Lab3_3D\ModelFiles folder to its directory path. 2. Go to File > Open Schematic and open E:\HLv90_GHz_Channel_for_vlab\Channel_Lab3_3D\diff_via_3D.ffs. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.1

3 3. Click on the Oscilloscope. 4. Select Eye Diagram." 5. Click Configure. 6. Under the Stimulus tab, set to 2.5Gbps and PRBS5; under the Eye Mask tab to set mask name as PCIE_RX. Click OK. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.2

5 7. Select U2 as the probe, disabling the two single-ended probes beneath it. 8. Click Start Simulation. 9. Once the simulation completes, select Zoom to Fit. 10. Check the Eye mask box and use Adjust Mask to center the mask in the eye. 11. Close the Oscilloscope. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.4

6 12. Double-click V1 in the topology. 13. In the Via Properties form, set the 3D EM Modeling field to be HyperLynx 3D EM Solver. 14. Click New. 15. Click OK to use the Default template 16. Within the HyperLynx 3D EM Project GUI, select the check boxes next to the VCC and GND layers in the Connected Layers field for stitching vias. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.5

7 17. Select the View 3D button. 18. In the HyperLynx 3D EM Geometry Viewer, hold down the left mouse button and move your mouse to rotate the 3D drawing. 19. Once you are done playing with the 3D drawing, close the 3D viewer. 20. Click OK in the Via Properties dialog box. 21. Notice that 3D now appears next to V1. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.6

8 22. Re-open the Oscilloscope. 23. Click Start Simulation. 24. Notice the error message about the missing via model. 25. Click No and close the simulation message window. 26. Close the Oscilloscope. 27. Double-click V Click the Open button. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.7

9 29. Change the simulation parameter Model Type in the upper right hand corner from Normal to Accelerated. This option determines how accurately characteristics related to the metal thickness are modeled. The default (set to Normal ) is more accurate but it is recommended to start studying the effects of various geometries in the Accelerated mode and then use the default for final validation of an optimized via design. 30. Select Simulate and the simulation status window will open. Depending on the number of CPU cores within your machine and memory the simulation could take several minutes Once the simulation completes, the simulation status window will close. 10 31. To view the resulting 4 port s-parameter via model, select the View Model button within the HyperLynx 3D EM Project GUI. This model will now be associated with and used to model V1 when running time domain analysis from the Oscilloscope as well as when s-parameter models are exported for the entire channel. 32. Select OK to close the HyperLynx 3D EM Project GUI. 33. Select OK to close the Via Properties GUI. 34. Re-open the Oscilloscope. 35. Click Start Simulation. This time, the simulation runs without a problem since V1 has proper model now. HyperLynx 3D Via Lab p.9

11 Creating a 3D Via Model in HyperLynx for Chanel Analysis 36. Repeat steps 4-11 to generate the new eye diagram. 37. When the simulation completes, double-click the U2 probe and change its color to something different (so you can distinguish it from the previous waveform). 38. Notice the results have changed. This is because we are now using the 3D via model in the simulation (which was saved as an S-parameter), versus the default HyperLynx via model. RECOMMENDATION: Repeat the demonstrated procedure above to create the 3D model for V2 and perform a time domain simulation.
