City of Houston Traffic Signal Management Software Upgrade Project Presented By: Michael Wahl, PE, PTOE, City of Houston Darren Beyer, CTO, Trafficware
ITS Goals Monitor and manage traffic by: Responding to congestion/incidents in real-time Providing real-time traveler information Reducing travel delay and emissions Improving capacity, accessibility and travel time reliability Enabling optimization of signal operations Identifying and responding faster to equipment failures 2
ITS Goals City ATMS Upgrades: Upgrade central system to Trafficware ATMS.now Upgrade intersection control software Upgrade hardware from B to C Connect to legacy controller hardware/software 3
ITS Goals TIGER Grant Upgrades: Installation of 138 CCTV cameras Installation of 91 Dynamic Message Signs Installation of 160 Mid-Block Count Stations Enhanced Signal Detection at 489 locations 4
Existing Systems for TIGER Grant and ATMS Integration: WiMAX communications 1,500 locations Fiber optic cable 150 miles Bluetooth to Travel Times 650 locations (near completion) 5
Houston ITS Overview Central Software Communications Field Devices ATMS.now WiMAX DMS Controller Software Fiber Optic Cable CCTV Enhanced Detection Central Software Project Tiger Grant Project In-Progress Existing Mid-block Count Stations Bluetooth Iteris 6
ITS Goals Working together to meet the goal 7
Responding to congestion/incidents in real-time Enhanced intersection detection and mid-block detection provide real-time feed to the ATMS to calculate congestion levels and trigger actions, to automatically change plans, or update DMS. ATMS integration with CCTV provides system operator visibility to the street, permitting them to use remote controls to manually flush intersection, or implement plans 8
Providing real-time traveler information Arterial level congestion level information collected by mid-block detection and intersection detection, and be sent to public facing web-site, agency partners, or media outlets. CCTV images can be provided to public, partners, and media outlets. Bluetooth travel times and congestion information can be communicated to public via DMS 9
Reducing travel delay and emissions Upgraded controller software allows collection of high resolution intersection data, that can be used to optimize coordination. Live split report data, can allow staff to monitor intersection performance in real-time, and see results of changes immediately. 10
Improving capacity, travel time reliability, and optimizing Central system can integrate with Synchro optimization software, using actual detection information gathered by the ATMS and allowing import/export of timing plans Central system can provide, as needed, traditional time-based coordination, traffic-responsive, or even SynchroGreen adaptive operation 11
Identifying and responding faster to equipment failures Diagnostic reports allow users to spot equipment trends, such as detection equipment failures. Real-Time alarms and events alerts personnel to hardware or timing plan issues via operator interface, or automatic texting/ ing. Performance reporting allows the agency to track plan performance overtime, and identify equipment or timing degradation trends 12
Opportunities for the future ATMS.now allows integration with emergency response dispatching, and aids in optimization of the EV routing via Emergency.now 13
Opportunities for the future ATMS.now connected vehicle module brings real-time intersection status to smart cars without additional hardware Agency Network Intersections ATMS Aggregator/ Distributor Public 14
