1 Clicker Craziness Simply pose a question verbally or create lessons and questions ahead of time using one of einstruction s 57 question templates and wait a few seconds while each student enters an answer on his or her individual response pad. Every student is involved. No one is embarrassed or shy about giving an answer. They re having fun and behind the scenes CPS is correlating all the results, freeing you to teach. 2 Create your own CPS Database from Class Roster Files A CPS Database file is a master file that houses all of your classes, students names and ID#s, which pad they are assigned to, and all of your Lessons, Quizzes and Tests along with the results/reports that are created when you give or Engage each lesson or test. Only one CPS Database file is required; but, you can choose to create a different database file for each subject you teach, if you prefer. We will create just one database file for this tutorial. You can choose to create additional ones, if you desire, though it is not necessary. By using the class roster files in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format, you can easily create your CPS database without having to enter your student names and ID #s. This will also make it very easy for you to import your grades into IGPro, which requires that names and ID#s match exactly. Let s get started! Create a New CPS Database File. 1. Launch the CPS software from the Start Menu or from the shortcut on the DeskTop. 2. From the File Menu, choose New Database. 3. Create a NEW FOLDER on your H: drive named: CPS 0607 Database 4. Open the new folder. 5. Enter a filename for you new database file in the File Name box, such as: LastName Click SAVE. Page 2 of 13

3 Import the CSV files for each of your classes this semester. These are located on the T: drive in the CPS Class Roster Files folder. 1. From the Classes Tab, select Import. 2. Click the Browse Button to locate your first.csv class file to import. Page 3 of 13

4 3. Change the Files of Type drop-down box to Comma Separated Values (*.csv) 4. Locate the file you wish to import and click Open. 5. Place a check in the checkbox for the correct class. Click OK. Page 4 of 13

5 6. Click on the class you just imported in the Classes List at the left side of the CPS window. All of your students names and the pad they are assigned to are now entered into this class. 7. Repeat this process until all of your class rosters are imported for each hour for this semester. Page 5 of 13

6 Using Verbal Questioning On-the-Fly Verbal questions are on-the-fly questions that you can use to spontaneously engage your students in a lesson. You can engage verbal questions from the Lessons Tab. 5. Click the Verbal button. Note: If you have the Show Large Screen Verbal option ON, the CPS Content Delivery window will appear. If you have that option OFF, only the Feedback Grid appears. This can be changed under the Setup Menu, Delivery Options command. Page 6 of 13

7 Using FastGrade to Enter Answer Keys for Existing Tests Use the FastGrade feature as a supplement to worksheets, exams and other hardcopies. You can create a FastGrade answer key, distribute hardcopies to the students, and have them respond for a quick grade. When you create a FastGrade lesson, you need to have a hard copy of the material with you, preferably one that has the correct answers indicated. You should make this FastGrade lesson before you present it to your students. Follow the steps below to create a FastGrade lesson. Page 7 of 13

9 Click ENGAGE LESSON to distribute the lesson to the class. Choose Student Managed Assessment if you are going to allow students to complete the assignment / exam at their own speed individually. Page 9 of 13

10 Learn to Create Lessons from Scratch To create a new lesson, simply do the following steps: 1. Open the database in which you want to create a lesson and click the Lessons tab. 2. Highlight the database name. 3. Click the Tools button. 4. Select the New command and then click Lesson. 5. The CPS-Lesson Attributes dialog box opens. 6. Type in the title of your lesson. 7. Click OK. 8. Your new lesson will appear on the left-hand side of the screen underneath the name of your database. You are now ready to begin writing questions underneath this lesson. 9. Click on the name of the lesson you just created. 10. From the Tools button, click New, then choose Question. 11. Add as many questions of varying types that you wish to this new lesson, indicating the correct answer for each. 12. You may add graphics to any question as well. 13. When you have finished adding questions to the lesson, close the Question Author dialog box. That lesson is ready to engage when you are ready to distribute to your students. Page 10 of 13

11 Import ExamView and PowerPoint Files If you have current ExamView tests and/or PowerPoint files that you wish to import into CPS, you can complete the following steps. ExamView Importing a ExamView test file will make it easy to use the exam/test without having to retype the questions into CPS. You can then engage the lesson and all questions and their corresponding answers are imported. 1. Simply right-click on the ExamView folder in your CPS database and choose Add File. 2. Locate the ExamView test/exam file and click OK. 3. Click on the file that now appears in the ExamView folder and click Engage Lesson. PowerPoint Importing a PowerPoint file will make it easy to use the PowerPoint file with Verbal Questions. You can show the PowerPoint presentation and get immediate feedback with verbal questions as an overlay on top of the PowerPoint presentation. 1. Simply right-click on the Presentations folder in ExamView and choose Add File. 2. Locate the PowerPoint file and click OK. 3. Click on the PowerPoint file that now appears in the Presentations folder and click Engage Lesson. Page 11 of 13

12 Importing Results into IGPro With the CPS software, you are able to export session data collected in CPS and export it into your InteGrade Pro gradebook. To do this, you must have a Class Roster in CPS that exactly matches the names of the students you have in your IG Pro gradebook. For example, if you have a student listed as Robert Jones in your IG gradebook, his name must also appear as Robert Jones in the CPS Class Roster you are using, not Bob Jones. If you imported your student names from a CSV file, your students names will match your IGPro gradebook exactly! Once you have a CPS Class Roster that matches, follow these steps to export your session data: From Inside your CPS Database: 1) After your class has finished answering questions in CPS, go to the Reports tab from the main CPS window. 2) Highlight the Session Title of the lesson you wish to export by clicking on it once, then click the Generate button. The CPS Reporting window will appear on the screen. 3) The names of students will appear on the left-hand side of the window. You can check on the Select All box to have all students scores exported and/or the Filter out students who didn t respond box if you had students who were not in class for the lesson. 4) On the right-hand side of the CPS Reporting window, a listing of report options will be available. Highlight InteGrade Pro Export by clicking on it once. 5) Click on the Preview button. 6) A Notepad window will appear on the screen with all of your session data contained within a new Notepad file. 7) Click on File and then from the drop-down menu, click on Save As. A Save As dialog box will appear on the screen. 8) From the Save As dialog box, type in the file name you wish your session data file to be called (e.g. Names of Capitols Quiz Hour 1). Be sure to remember what you called this file and where you saved it. You may want to create a separate folder for EACH CLASS on your H: drive to save IGPRO EXPORTS. 9) In the box Save as type, use the drop-down menu to select All Files instead of Text File. 10) Click on the Save button. Your file will be saved with the same name you gave it plus a.gbk extension. 11) Close the NotePad window. Page 12 of 13

13 From Inside IGPro 1) After you have saved your session data into a.gbk file, open up IGPro. 2) Open the Class Spreadsheet that you wish to import the CPS data into first!! 3) Click on the File Menu, and from the drop-down menu click Import Into Gradebook. 4) An Import into Gradebook window will appear, Click on Next. 5) You will now need to find the.gbk file you saved that has your CPS session data. 6) When you find it, highlight it by clicking on it once, then click Open. 7) Your data should now appear in your IGPro Gradebook, including name of Task and Points received for each student, etc. 8) REMEMBER: You can t change the point value after the fact. You can however change the name of the assignment if you wish. Note: By default, CPS will export your session data based on a 100 point scoring system. Therefore if you have a quiz with 10 questions, each question would be worth 10 points. If you wish to change this, you will need to do this when you engage the lesson during your class session. When you first engage a lesson you will be taken to the CPS Session Setup window. In this window, there is a Max Points box. Here you can change the point value for your set of questions. So if you set this number to 50 and you have 10 questions, each question will be worth 5 points. Page 13 of 13
