Lighting Automation Systems Building A Wireless Control Lighting System

Networks / Server Internet Network Hierarchy and Devices - Networks and Server A lighting control system needs be hosted by a server. The highest control level of multiple networks. Network / Gateway Network / Relay A company with multiple locations may need a server. Can be a physical server or a cloud based server. Team / Sensor Subnet / Adapter LED Luminaire Circuit / PLC Box Program, modify, view and store all settings of all equipment in the networks. System of a moderate size without video surveillance can do with a cloud server. Large systems or systems requiring video surveillance need a physical server, local or in a different state. Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Network Hierarchy and Devices - Internet Internet is required for communication between Server and Network. Server communicates with Network when settings of control devices or lighting fixtures are modified or to allow remote real-time control or monitoring. Once settings are programmed, they are downloaded to control devices and lighting fixtures. Network runs with no need of Internet. Team / Sensor Circuit / PLC Box LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Team/ Sensor Circuit / PLC Box Network Hierarchy and Devices Network and Gateway Controller All lighting equipment of one physical location, e.g., a warehousing facility may be defined as one (or several) Network(s). Each Network requires one Gateway Controller. Gateway organizes network, communicates upward with server via Internet, downward with control devices within network. Gateway can communicate with devices over a distance of 1000m = 3300 ft. LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Network Hierarchy and Devices Network and Relay Extender Extends Gateway coverage to longer distances within network. A Relay Extender is needed if distance between Gateway and a Dimming Adapter is over 3300ft. Maybe required for each stand-alone building of a multibuilding facility. Maybe required to enable data communication from floor to floor of a multi-storey building. Team / Sensor Circuit / PLC Box Exact placement and quantities of relays are determined in commissioning. Best to have a few spare relays on hand. LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Team / Sensor Circuit / PLC Box Network Hierarchy and Devices Subnetwork and Dimming Adapter All lighting equipment of one section of a facility, e.g., an assembly area in a warehouse, may be defined as one Subnetwork. Max. 14 Subnetworks in a Network. Each Subnetwork requires one Dimming Adapter. Adapter receives commands from Gateway and issues commands to all lighting fixtures in Subnetwork. A Subnetwork can be one floor of a multi-storey office building; one Adapter per floor as Adapter may not be able to penetrate floor/ceiling effectively. Time schedules turn on/off or dim all lights of a Subnetwork, do not control individual Teams of fixtures. LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Network Hierarchy and Devices Team and Sensor Lighting fixtures turned on/off or dimmed together as a group may be defined as a Team, e.g., all lighting fixtures along a shelf aisle. Max. 14 Teams in a Subnetwork. Unlimited number of luminaires in a Team. A single, or a group of, Motion Sensors turn on or dim all lights of a Team. After turned on, lights are dimmed to certain level and then turned off when no movement is detected, each step after certain length of delay. Placement and quantity of a group of Motion Sensors should be such as to cover all traffic entrances. Motion Sensor Types: PIR and microwave. Team / Sensor Circuit / PLC Box Daylight Sensors - may be needed in areas close to windows or skylights, can work alone or in conjunction with Motion Sensors. LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Network Hierarchy and Devices Circuit and PLC Circuit Control Box 3-step PLC dimmable lighting fixtures in a circuit can be turned on/off or dimmed together as a group with a PLC Circuit Control Box. Regular non-dimmable lighting fixtures in a circuit can be turned on/off together as a group with a PLC Circuit Control Box. PLC Box replaces regular switch in a circuit, receives wireless commands and controls lighting fixtures through power line of the circuit. Install one PLC Box per each circuit. Team / Sensor Circuit / PLC Box LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Networks / Server Internet Network / Gateway Network / Relay Subnet / Adapter Network Hierarchy and Devices Team and Client Remote Controller Lighting fixtures turned on/off or dimmed together as a group may be defined as a Team, e.g., all lighting fixtures along a shelf aisle. Max. 14 Teams in a Subnetwork. Unlimited number of luminaires in a Team. Use hand-held Client Remote Controller to manually control on/off/dimming of fixtures of Team or Teams. A Client Remote = a wall switch made mobile, may be placed in a wallmount holder at each location of a previous wall switch. A Client Remote can operate multiple Teams of lighting fixtures. Team / Sensor Circuit / PLC Box LED Luminaire Team / Client Remote Controller

Wireless Network Hierarchy Highest control level of multiple networks Network Subnetwork Team Network Hierarchy and Devices Application Example Wireless Device Functions All lighting of a company with multiple locations Lighting of a warehouse facility Lighting of each standalone building All lights of an assembly area or shelf aisle section All lighting fixtures along a shelf aisle A circuit of "regular" nondimmable LED panel fixtures Server, local/physical or cloud based Gateway Controller Relay extender Dimming Adapter Motion Sensor, Daylight Sensor; two pieces Host & Probe Hand-held Remote Controller, two types PLC Circuit Control Box set up, modify, view and store all settings of all equipment in the networks Organize network, communicate upward with server via Internet, downward with control devices within network Extend Gateway coverage to longer distances. Receives commands from Gateway and issues commands to all lighting fixtures in subnetwork. A single or multiple motion sensors turn on or dim all lights of a team. After turned on, lights are dimmed to certain level and then turned off when no movement is detected, each step after certain length of delay. Engineering Remote configures devices and lighting fixtures. Client Remote manually controls on/off/dimming of fixtures of team(s) Receives wireless commands; switch and dim 3-step dimmable fixtures in a circuit together as a group; switch non-dimmable fixtures in a circuit as a group, all through power line of the circuit.

Server Network/Device Network/Gateway Network/Relay Subnetwork/Dimming Adapter Team/Motion Sensor, Daylight Sensor; two pieces - Host & Probe Team/Remote Controller, two types Team/PLC Circuit Control Box Application Example All lighting of a company with multiple locations Lighting of a warehouse facility Lighting of each stand-alone building All lights of an assembly area or shelf aisle section All lighting fixtures along a shelf aisle A circuit of "regular" nondimmable LED panel fixtures Network Design Considerations Functions set up, modify, view and store all settings of all equipment in the networks Organize network, communicate upward with server via Interbet, downward with control devices within network Extend Gateway coverage to longer distances Receives commands from Gateway and issues commands to all lighting fixtures in subnetwork. Key issues to consider All systems need a server. System of moderate size without video surveillance can do with a cloud server based in Jishan. Large systems or systems requiring video surveillance need a physical server, local or in a different state. Typically one location needs one Gateway Controller. A Gateway can communicate over distance of 1000m = 3300 ft. Relay is needed if straight-line distance between Gateway and a Dimming Adapter is over 3300ft or, as often in office buildings, there are obstacles along path, e.g., walls, floors. Need of relays and quantity required to be determined in commissioning. Best to have a few spare relays on hand. Each subnetwork requires a Dimming Adapter. A subnetwork can be one floor of a multi-storey office building; one dimming adapter may not penetrate floor/ceiling effectively if subnetwork includes two floors. Time schedules turn on/off or dim all lights of a subnetwork, do not control individual teams of fixtures. Max. 14 subnetworks in a network. A single or multiple motion sensors turn on or dim all Max. 14 teams in a subnetwork. Placement and quantity of a group of lights of a team. After turned on, lights are dimmed to motion sensors should be such as to cover all traffic entrances. Daylight certain level and then turned off when no movement sensors may be needed in areas close to windows or skylights, can work is detected, each step after certain length of delay. alone or in conjunction with motion sensors. Engineering Remote configures devices and lighting fixtures. Client Remote manually controls on/off/dimming of fixtures of team(s). Remote controllers can operate with multiple groups. Receives wireless commands; switch and dim 3-step dimmable fixtures in a circuit together as a group; switch non-dimmable fixtures in a circuit as a group, all through power line of the circuit. Engineering remote is not used on a daily basis, only a few are needed for a facility. A client remote may be considered a switch on the wall but now can be carried around. A remote may be placed at each location where a wall switch was previously located. A wall-mount holder is available to make user remote effectively a wall switch. Install one PLC circuit control box per each circuit.

Warehouse and Manufacturing Relighting A good place to start with: Lighting requirements straightforward; Only a few types of lighting fixtures; Quantities of lighting fixtures are large. Try to steer typical customers (a few hundred fixtures) to a simple system: Cloud server Time schedule Motion sensor Simple payback break-even point well within 12 months even without savings from having wireless controls. Savings from controls estimated percentage of time of lights being turned off.

Lighting Survey for Installing Wireless Systems Relighting objectives: Maintain current light levels? One-for-one replacement of fixtures? Cost considerations, payback expectation. Control requirements. Existing lighting Measure current light levels; Document types of work areas, dimensions; Record types of fixtures, quantities, locations, mounting heights, row and column spacings; Best to put info. on a drawing of spaces. Factors to determine for wireless system: How to organize network(s), subnetworks and teams? How many, if any, relays? Where to place motion sensors? How many needed? How many remote controllers are needed?

Factory Support in Determining Lighting Solution Upon receiving lighting survey results, factory will Recommend, or confirm selection of, lighting fixtures; Provide layout and calculation of work plane horizontal illuminance values; Confirm types and quantities of gateway, relay, dimming adapter, PLC circuit control box, sensor and remote controller; Confirm prices.

Factory Support for Commissioning Program all lighting fixtures and control devices, in factory and prior to shipping, based on lighting survey and any additional user requirements. If user simply accepts all factory presets, entire system will work automatically, i.e., without on-site commissioning work, when all devices and fixtures are energized. In case of anything not going as expected, factory can diagnose and resolve issues by remote online access. Factory provides instructions on (re)setting network IDs using DIP dials or engineering remote controller. Factory can remotely program time schedules if user so requires.

Device Configuration with DIP - Gateway A network is defined by a 4-digit ID, represented by an 8-digit DIP sequence on Gateway, e.g., Network ID 0102 is represented by off off off on off off on off. ( 01 Part I off off off on ; 02 Part II off off on off ) User manual is provided.

Device Configuration with DIP - Relay Relay extends range of Gateway and must carry the same 4-digit network ID, represented by the same 8-digit DIP sequence as on Gateway, e.g., Network ID 0102 DIP off off off on off off on off. User manual is provided.

Device Configuration with DIP - Dimming Adapter A subnetwork is defined by a 2-digit ID, represented by a 4-digit DIP sequence on Dimming Adapter, e.g., Subnet ID 03, DIP off off on on Dimming Adapter is identified by Network ID + Subnet ID, e.g., Subnet/Dimming Adapter DIP off off off on off off on off off off on on. User manual is provided.

Device Configuration with DIP - Motion and Daylight Sensors A sensor or a group of sensors control a team of lighting fixtures. Sensor host has two DIP panels. PIR sensor set Sensor host carries its network ID and subnet ID on red DIP panel as on Dimming Adapter, e.g., , DIP off off off on off off on off off off on on. Microwave sensor set Team or Group ID is defined by the last 4 digit on the blue DIP panel, e.g., 05, DIP off on off on. Daylight sensor set First 8 digits on the blue DIP panel define sensor control actions. User manual is provided.

Device Configuration with Engineering Remote Controller Engineering Remote Controller Operates within a subnetwork and carries network ID and subnet ID. Pressing 991#&(network ID)&(subnet ID)& on keypad assigns both IDs to Engineering Remote. Assigns network ID and subnet ID to control devices and lighting fixtures, and group them into teams by assigning team/group numbers. Pressing 11#&(Group No.)& on keypad assigns team number to fixture and also passes on network and subnet IDs to fixture. Configures Client Remote Controller. Pressing 91#& passes on network and subnet IDs to Client Remote. Set sensor control parameters. User manual is provided. Both DIP and Eng. Remote configure devices. Eng. Remote has priority. Only remote controller configures lighting fixtures.

Manual Control of Lighting Fixtures with Client Remote Controller Client Remote Controller Operates within a subnetwork; its network ID and subnet ID are received from Engineering Remote. Turns on/off and dim a team/group of fixtures. Pressing M0360% dims all fixtures of Team 03 down to 60%. User manual is provided.
