1 Newbury Street Water Main Replacement Project

2 Newbury Street Water Main Replacement Project Purpose and Goals Replace existing water mains on Newbury Street from Arlington Street to Gloucester Street Improve the overall water system as part of the Commission s capital improvement program Mitigate impacts during construction by conducting a program of community outreach and day to day coordination of construction activities.

8 Phases of Work Install Temporary Water Bypass Relay Main Line Water Pipe Relay water services to property line Reconnect fire pipes inspect condition and advise owner if in poor condition Relay hydrant laterals and set new hydrants Relay pipe in intersections, with the exception of Berkeley and Exeter Streets Sideline connections will require side street shutdowns of water system Pressure Test and Disinfection Temporary Paving Permanent Paving

9 Temporary Water Bypass The contractor shall install, chlorinate and maintain temporary facilities to provide domestic and fire protection supply for all service interruptions in connection with work under this contract that exceed a one day shutdown

10 Temporary Water Bypass Contractor can install up to 500 feet in one day rolling NO PARKING ZONE Feed hydrant for bypass, system is active and outside work limits. Temporary bypass in gutter with service connections.

11 Temporary Water Bypass Individual coordination for connection to bypass system access to building Bypass layout is above ground except at handicapped ramps, intersections and around the radius of intersecting streets Fire service connection needs to be coordinated with the building owner/manager alarms and location of connection

12 Temporary Water Bypass Services Service Hookups Outside Spigots ¾ or 1 services Remove Meter for Internal Connection Fire Pipes Siamese connection Hose thru wall or window After service valve

13 Water Main Shutdowns Scheduled shutdowns to activate/deactivate temporary bypass Generally takes 20 minutes to tie into bypass Need to provide designated person for coordination For side street connections may require shutdowns time and duration to be coordinated 48 hour minimum notice Emergency shutdowns bypass damaged

14 Construction Activity Work schedule Monday to Friday 7 AM to 4 PM, unless off peak shutdown necessary Typical trench excavation 5 wide 5 6 deep Contractor shall maintain access Temporary paving installed every Friday, trench maintained during week Dust Control Rodent Survey and Monitoring Traffic Management 75 rolling work zone for mainline pipe Posted 48 hours in advance of NO PARKING Lateral Connections in phases

16 Temporary and Permanent Paving Temporary and Permanent Paving by BWSC Contractor will install temporary paving as the work progresses Permanent paving will be performed under a separate contract Projected Schedule Gloucester to Fairfield June 2012 Fairfield to Dartmouth November 2012 Dartmouth to Arlington April 2013 Sidewalks impacted will be restored within two months and match existing materials BPWD will determine when and extent of additional permanent restoration once coordinated with all other utilities and scheduled private development

17 Community Outreach Program Dedicated Business Liaison Visit businesses to exchange contact information Work with Field Engineer to coordinate shutdowns for transfer between water main and temporary bypass Visit businesses prior to service interruption and to discuss time of shutdowns Coordinate for maintenance of access for customers, deliveries and trash removal Liaison: Jamie Simchik, (617) x 17 or jsimchik@reginavilla.com during business hours of 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunil Patel onsite

18 Community Outreach Program Notice letters will be delivered ~2 weeks prior to the start of construction Abutters will receive progress reports via advisories and updates Informational flyers/posters will be provided for abutters and business customers Emergency conditions via and in person, example damage to bypass Webpage updates and project status
