1 Kaltura Faculty Reference Guide What is Kaltura? Kaltura is an Online Video Platform that provides many flexible ways for you to create, publish and manage, and incorporate video in your Moodle courses. Kaltura in Moodle Our Kaltura integration with Moodle provides faculty and students with a personal Media Library as well as a Course Library, where you can: upload existing videos and audio files (you cannot upload or link to a outube video for that just add a URL resource to your course) record audio record live video from your webcam record your desktop to demonstrate how to do some task record a presentation or lecture basically, open up a Powerpoint presentation and record audio narrations and/or video using the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder our Personal My Media Library page To access your My Media page, go the Moodle home page, click on your name in the top right corner of Moodle, and in the drop down menu select My Media. ou can use the ADD EW button to add different types of media to your library, depending on what you want to do. 1

2 Below is an overview of each option in the Add ew menu: Option Media Upload Webcam Recording Record a presentation Video presentation Screen recording Function For uploading an existing media file (video, audio, high- resolution annotated image) from your computer or (mobile device) For using the laptop/desktop s camera to record video. So, this option usually does not work on a phone. For using the Offline Desktop Recorder called Capture Space to record video and/or audio narrations while running a PowerPoint presentation. For synchronizing an existing video in the Media Library with a paged document (PowerPoint, PDF, Word doc) so that you move from page to page while the video plays. For recording your actions on your computer, allowing you to demonstrate how to do something, or run a PowerPoint but still be able to go to websites and other programs on the computer. our Course Media Gallery page: Kaltura Media Library To access your course gallery page, go into your course, and in the red menu bar at the top, open This course and at the bottom of the list select Kaltura Media Library. ou can add videos from your personal Media Library to your Course Library. Students can also publish their videos to the Course Library. Comments can be added to videos viewed in the Course Library to start an engaging discussion on the content. 2

3 1. The Actions menu allows you to: a. Add/edit the description for the Course Media Gallery, and enable/disable Comments for videos in the gallery. ou can also decide to moderate student- created content, so that you have to approve them before they are displayed in the Gallery. b. Access the Analytics page for your Gallery. Instructors have access to Analytics in the Course Library where you can see how many times a video was watched, when, by whom, and for how long. These reports can be printed directly or downloaded to a spreadsheet. 2. Use the Add Media button to add videos from your own Media Library to the Course Gallery. 3. When videos are published to the Course Gallery, simply click on them to view a. Scroll down to the Comments area to comment or respond to existing comments. 3

4 Below is an overview of the Editing Tools available for videos in your My Media area: Add Media to the Course Page, in context with the Course Outline ou can add Kaltura Resources and Activities to your course page as well. There are 2 Kaltura resources and 1 Kaltura Student Activity you can add to your course: 1. Kaltura Video Resource this simply creates a link to a video file that you upload to the Kaltura server or record on the fly while creating the link. 2. Kaltura Media Assignment this allows you to create a dropbox for your students to submit one video to you (instructor) for grading and feedback. 4

5 Other Activities using Kaltura Videos ou can have students post videos in a Discussion Forum using the Kaltura icon in the text editor to upload/share their videos. This allows for students to review each other s videos and post comments in a threaded discussion. Offline Recording with Kaltura Capture Space Desktop Recorder Capture Space is a tool you can download to your computer and it allows you to record offline: Webcam (video) only, Voice (audio) only, Screen with audio (as you narrate), Screen and webcam, Presentations & Lectures (i.e. narrated PowerPoint presentation with or without webcam) When done, you can edit your video by trimming (cut off something from the beginning or the ending or both), clipping (cutting out an unwanted piece from the middle of the recording) adding titles and/or credits Then with the click of a button, you upload the video to your Media Library on Moodle! ow it is available for you to add to any course(s) you wish. Advantages: ou don t have to be connected to the Internet to record. ou can do what you need to and then upload it to your Media Library later. CaptureSpace is available for PC and Mac users. One click upload into Moodle. ou can still edit (trim and clip) your video in your Media Library after uploading to Moodle. 5
