1 Using VoiceThread with Canvas VoiceThread is a learning tool that can be used to enhance student engagement and online presence. With VoiceThread, instructors and/or students can create, share, and comment on images, PowerPoint presentations, videos, audio files, documents, and PDFs, using microphone, webcam, text, phone, and audio-file upload. At Indiana University, VoiceThread is an external tool that integrates into Canvas. You can add VoiceThread to the same course multiple times. For example, if you want to link directly to three different VoiceThreads in your course, add three separate VoiceThread placements, one for each thread. 2 Using VoiceThread with Canvas How to add to a Canvas module 1. Open the Modules tool (located in the lefthand course navigation). 2. Either create a new module or edit an existing module. 3. Add a content item to the module by clicking the + icon and select External Tool. citl.indiana.edu citl@indiana.edu

3 4. Select the VoiceThread tool from the list. 5. For the Page Name field, enter a descriptive name for your VoiceThread activity. 6. If desired, check Load (this tool) in a new tab. 7. Click Add Item to save. 8. Click the Publish icon to the right of the LTI tool link. 9. If the module is not yet published, click the Publish icon to the right of the module title. 10. Click the link for the app to test the integration. You will see a setup page. You will need to choose one of the options displayed in the setup page before the Module element is ready to be used for students. For descriptions of the options, see p. 6. The setup page will look similar to this screenshot: How to add to course navigation in Canvas After VoiceThread has been added to Canvas via a module, you have the capability to add it to course navigation for a specific Canvas course. 1. In the Modules tool, right-click the link for the tool you just added, and copy the link address. citl.indiana.edu citl@indiana.edu

4 2. Open the Settings tool, and then click Apps. Click Apps 3. In the Apps tab, search for the Redirect tool in the search bar. 4. Open the Redirect tool and click Add App. 5. In the Add App dialog: a. In the Name field, enter the name of the tool as you d like it to appear in the course navigation. b. In the URL Redirect field, paste the URL you copied from the Modules tool. c. Check Show in Course Navigation. d. Click Add App. 6. 5 How to add to a Canvas assignment To create a graded assignment in VoiceThread, you ll need to create a Canvas assignment that uses an external tool as the submission type. To do so: 1. Log into Canvas and navigate to your course. 2. From the course navigation menu, click Assignments. 3. To create a new assignment, select +Assignment. 4. Name the assignment, and write a description or instructions if you wish. 5. Under Submission Type, select External Tool. 6. Click in the text field below the external tool URL. 7. 6 Configuring a VoiceThread Activity After you ve added a VoiceThread link in your course, you must decide what you want students to see and do when they click that link. To configure the VoiceThread activity, click the link you ve just created. You ll see three or four options: Select the option that is most appropriate for the activity you have planned. Note that once you make your choice, you cannot change it. If you make a mistake during setup, delete the link you just created and start over. Your students will be redirected to whatever choice you make: Course View: This option takes your students to the main VoiceThread page for your course, where they will see all of the VoiceThreads that have been shared with that course. They will also be able to create VoiceThreads from this page. VT Home: This option takes your students to their own MyVoice home pages, where they can see all of their own Voice- Threads and create new ones. VT Home is a good choice for an activity in which you are asking students to make their own VoiceThreads. Individual VT: This option takes students directly to a specific VoiceThread. When you choose this option, you ll be prompted to select the VoiceThread you want to use. Individual VoiceThread is a good choice if you want students to view and/or comment on a specific VoiceThread. Assignment Builder: This option takes students to a graded VoiceThread activity, the results of which will be sent back to the Canvas or Oncourse gradebook. If you choose this option, see Setting up a VoiceThread assignment below to complete the setup. Note: In Canvas, the Assignment Builder option only displays when you add VoiceThread to a Canvas assignment. See instructions on doing so earlier in this guide (p. 5), Add as many VoiceThread placements to your course as you like. Each time you add a placement, configure the activity as described in the steps above. Setting up a VoiceThread assignment If you selected Assignment Builder on the VoiceThread Setup screen, select the type of assignment you wish to create from the following three options: Create a VoiceThread: Requires students to create their own VoiceThreads and submit them for grading Submit a Comment: Requires students to submit one or more comments on a VoiceThread that you have chosen Watch a VoiceThread: Requires students to watch a VoiceThread of your choice from start to finish After you ve selected the type of assignment you d like to create, you ll be taken through the steps to complete the setup process. citl.indiana.edu citl@indiana.edu

7 Submitting a VoiceThread assignment When students click the link for a graded assignment, they will see the assignment you ve created. They can immediately do one of the following: Create or select a VoiceThread to submit for the Create a VoiceThread assignment Record comments on your VoiceThread for the Submit a Comment assignment Watch the VoiceThread for the Watch a VoiceThread assignment As soon as a student clicks the Submit Assignment button, you ll be able to grade that student s work: Note: Currently, assignments can only be submitted once. If a student accidentally uploads the wrong file or otherwise makes a mistake in completing the assignment, there is no way to allow a re-submission. You will have to ask the student to the assignment to you or make some other arrangement for the student to submit the assignment. Grading a VoiceThread assignment 1. Navigate to your course, and then click the link to the VoiceThread assignment. This will display the grader: 2. To see a student s submission, on the right, click that student s name. To jump directly to a student s comment, click the comment just below the student s name. If you have students who have not yet submitted their assignments, you can click Remind to send an reminder. 3. Enter a percentage grade between 0 and 100, and then press Enter. The grade will be sent to the Canvas gradebook. In Canvas, the corresponding assignment can have any point value you wish to assign to it. The percentage from VoiceThread will be multiplied by the point value to produce the correct number of points in the gradebook. citl.indiana.edu citl@indiana.edu
