Workshop Purpose: The purpose of this class is to guide you through creating your own account, and introduce you to the basic functions of your account. This packet will assist you with the set-up of your account, and provide instructions regarding sending and receiving s. Part 1: Creating your account 1) In the top search bar, type in gmail.com 2) Click on create account
3) Enter the required information in the box on the right hand side of the screen. Note: When selecting an address, try to choose something you ll remember. If your address is not available, Google will provide suggestions based on addresses that are available, or you can try a different address of your own choosing. Note: When choosing a password, you should also select something easy to remember, however, it is best to use a combination of letters and numbers to ensure the security of your account. A combination of capital and lower case letters is also a good way to provide security for your account. (A green bar will appear as next to your password once you have a strong enough password for your account.) 4) Click Next Step
5) Scroll to the bottom of the privacy and terms page and click I Agree when the button turns blue. 6) Click the button that says continue to Gmail to go to your account.
Part 2: A guide to your workspace The inbox: This is what you will see every time you log onto your address. New messages will appear in dark black text while messages that you have read will be grayed out. The number you new messages you have will appear on the left hand side, next to the tab for your inbox. (Google always send you a welcome once you have signed up for an account, so you should already have one message in your inbox.) Receiving Messages: To read a message: Simply click on the message you wish to read. You can delete a message by clicking on the Delete button. You can reply to a message by selecting in the upper right hand corner.
Sending a new message: To send a new message, click on the compose button on the left hand side of your screen. There are three primary parts to a message. 1) You must have the address you will be sending your message to. This will typically end with symbol, followed by the name of the provider and a.com,.org etc. Some @sbcglobal.net. 2) You should add a subject line to your . This will be the first thing a person sees when they receive your and it will let them know what your message is about. 3) You should have something to say! This is the body of your and it goes in the large section of the screen. To address Subject Line Body of your
Once you have entered each of these three items to your message, you can click the send button to send it off! is usually pretty quick to send, so it should only take a minute or two for the other party to receive your message. If the is not successfully sent, you will receive a message back, otherwise, you can trust that your has gone through. Part 3: Other Tidbits Sent Mail: Contains a history of the messages you have sent to other people. Drafts: s that you have begun composing, but were not able to finish. You can access these on the left side of the screen. Trash: Contains messages you have previously deleted. These will only be saved for a small amount of time, however, before they are erased from your account. Spam: s that have been identified as unwelcome advertisement, or potentially dangerous. Occasionally, s you trust will be accidentally sent to your spam folder, so you may want to check this on occasion. Rule of thumb: If you don t recognize an address, don t open it! Chances are these are malicious messages and potentially harmful to your computer. Simply delete them to be safe. If you are still unsure, you can open the , but DO NOT download anything unless you know exactly who it is that has sent these messages to you. Just like answering your door, play it smart and don t let anyone suspicious in.
