EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY. EMPOWER YOURSELF. Description: Tour My School Exploring Multimedia Applications The example project created for this Lesson Accelerator combines images, narration, and music to produce a video presentation about the student s school. The resulting multimedia slideshow might be used as part of an orientation process to introduce new or prospective students to the school building. Students will learn how to import and edit images, record their voice, add transitions, music, and finally export their project as a movie file. The example project could be easily adapted to present information about your own school, or for projects in any curriculum area that could benefit from integrating images with music and sound. Goals: To provide students with the opportunity to use software tools in producing creative works that communicates information and ideas effectively to different audiences. Objectives: The student will be able to: Import and arrange images on a timeline. Edit images and add special effects. Add motion and transitions to the slideshow. Add voice narration and music. Export the slideshow in an appropriate format. Preparation and Skill Mastery: Students should have mastered basic computer skills, such as the use of input devices (mouse, keyboard, etc.), opening and closing applications, and saving documents to a personal folder or directory. Optional skills include using a digital camera or scanner to produce images that will be used in the slideshow, instead of the sample images provided in the downloadable resource packet. If students have - 1 -
the option of importing their own images from the Internet or another source, such as a digital camera or scanner, then the instructor will need to define the procedure and guidelines for importing images, based on the available equipment and student skill level
Materials: A computer with multimedia software installed A microphone for recording voice narration Access to the resources provided in the downloadable resource packet that accompanies this Lesson Accelerator Digital camera or scanner (optional) Digital music recording (optional) Task List: The tasks to be completed for this project include: Import and arrange images in the application timeline. Edit images, as needed. Add motion and transitions. Add titles and other text. Add voice narration and music. Export the finished project to the appropriate format. Assessment: Assessment might be based on the following: Was the student able to successfully import images, edit them, and arrange them on the timeline? Was the student able to add special effects, motion, and transitions? Was the student able to add titles and text? Was the student able to create an audio track with voice narration and music? Was the student able to successfully export the finished project? Extending and Adapting: Here are some possible ways that this project might be extended or adapted for different curriculum areas, grade levels, and skill/ability levels: The example project demonstrated in the tutorial movies uses images included in the downloadable resource packet. Students may substitute their own images, narration, text, and music to create a video presentation about their own school. Images - 3 -
might be provided by the instructor, or taken by the students themselves. Substitute appropriate images, narration, text, and music to create a video presentation about a subject currently under study in the classroom. Extend this project by having students share their videos with each other and then discuss the elements that add to or detract from an effective presentation
Notes to the Instructor: The example project for this Lesson Accelerator involves creating an informational video about a fictitious school building. Students can follow along with the tutorial movies to re-create the example project and learn how to use many of the basic tools in the software application. Then, to demonstrate their mastery of these tools, you might ask them to create an original project, using their own images, text, narration, and music. Included in the downloadable resource packet: A copy of this document in MS Word format A copy of this document in PDF format The images used to create the example project A copy of the final project in WMV and/or QuickTime format The following page contains an assessment rubric that could be used by the instructor to assess student work, or by the students for self-assessment of their final project
Assessment Rubric for Tour My School Rating: Poor Fair Good Excellent Objective or Task: Open a new document Is unable to complete this task without guidance Is able to complete this task with some guidance Is able to complete this task without any guidance Is able to complete this task without any guidance and can apply the same process to other projects without help Import images Arrange images on the timeline Edit/crop images, as needed Add title/text Add special effects & motion Add narration Change the image duration Add transitions Add music from a file or custom Export the final project Total Score: Row Score: - 6 -
Student Information for Completing this Project: The following information was used to create the example project, as demonstrated in the tutorial movies: Clip 1 - Image: aerial shot (get from Google Earth) Text: Welcome to Pioneer Middle School Narration: Hello new students. Welcome to Pioneer Middle School. Clip 2 - Image: front entry Narration: Let s take a tour of the school.
