5 Part B -Essay nswer any four questions only 01. a) i. Computer storage devices can be categorized into three types based on the medium used to store/retrieve data. State the three types of media and give an example for each type. ii. SRM is most suitable to be used for register and cache memories. Give reasons. b) Consider the following scenario. You are given the task of designing a flame detection logic circuit for a toxic waste incinerator. The intense heat of the fire is intended to neutralize the toxicity of the waste introduced into the incinerator. Thermal (detection of high temperature) flame detection system and three sensors are used. Each sensor comes equipped with a normally-open contact (open if no flame, closed if flame detected), which you will use to activate the inputs of a logic system. Your task is to design the circuitry of the logic system to open the waste valve if and only if there is good flame proven by the sensors. strategy that would meet both needs would be a two out of three sensor logic, whereby the waste valve is opened if at least two out of the three sensors show good flame. The following table assigns Boolean values for the above scenario. Condition / functionality Boolean value Sensors show good flame 1 Sensors do not show good flame 0 Waste valve opened 1 Waste valve closed 0 i. Construct a truth table for this system ii. Write down the standard SOP Boolean expression from the truth table obtained in (i) iii. Draw a combined gates to represent the truth table obtained in (i) (Use only ND, OR, and NOT gates). iv. Simplify the Boolean expression obtained in (ii) by using Karnaugh map or Boolean Laws. 5 [ see page six
6 02. a) Write down the explanation of the following HTML elements. i. br ii. img iii. a b) Consider the following figure which shows a section of a web page of Wasgamuwa National Park. Write down full HTML / CSS code to produce the above web page. ssume that the name of the image file is bird.jpg. The link Wasgamuwa National Park should link to the site and Border mentioned by is defined by CSS. 03. a) Suppose you have been asked to design a computer network with Internet services to an office of 50 staff with the following limitations: ll the staffs have individual desktop PCs. Only the executive staff of 10 will have access to both and web services. ll the staffs need access to . Mail and web services are provided by an ISP. The system must provide an adequate level of networks security from external threats. i) State the basic network devices that you will require for the network and briefly explain the major functions of these devices. ii) Draw a diagram to show the interconnectivity among devices. iii) Suggest a technique by which you can provide a few of the staff with both and web access while all the others are served with only. 6 [ see page seven
7 b) ssume that you are given a full block of IP addresses from to You are required to subnet this block into at least 5 subnets each able to support a maximum number of hosts. i) What is the subnet mask of this network? ii) Give the start and the end IP address of each subnet. 04. Consider the following scenario. company manages many projects. project contains ProjectNumber, and ProjectName. Each project requires the services of many employees. n employee may be assigned to several different projects. Employee contains EmployeeNumber, First Name,Last Name, and JobClassification. n employee is assigned to a project for specified hours. This job classification determines the hourly billing rate. The hourly billing rate is dependent on the employee s position. Many employees can have the same job classification. The administration wants to maintain these particulars in a digital database. a) Identify all the entities identified in this scenario. b) Draw an E-R diagram for this scenario (mark all the relationship types on the diagram). c) n employee is assigned to a project for specified hours. What is descriptive attribute? Explain your answer by using the E-R diagram drawn in (b). d) Briefly explain how many-to-many relationship, in this scenario, can be removed. e) Convert all the relations in 3 rd Normal Form (3NF) and state the answer in the form of schema. 05. a) Write down the short notes on the followings i) Compiler ii) Third Generation computer programming language b) Consider the following python program. def test(alist, item): first = 0 last = len(alist)-1 found = false while first<=last and not found: midpoint = (first + last)//2 if alist[midpoint] == item: found = True else: if item <alist[midpoint]: last = midpoint-1 else: first = midpoint+1 return found testlist = [1,4,6,3,7] print (test(testlist, 3)) 7 [ see page eight
8 i) Write down the control structures used in the given program ii) What is the searching technique used in this program? iii) Write down the output after executing this program. iv) If the line print (test(testlist,3)) is changed to print (test(testlist,5)), write down the output. 06. a) What is the difference between business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) electronic commerce? b) What are two advantages of electronic commerce for a customer over traditional commerce? c) Write down two possible drawbacks of electronic commerce. d) Give two advantages of using shopping cart software in e-commerce web site. e) Define the term Web portal. *** 8 [ End
