6 Restore button: a button to click that returns a window on the computer desktop to its previous size Return: see Enter right alignment: type of alignment used to align text to the right margin Roman numerals: numbers made up of certain letters (I, V, X) Rotate tool: tool that lets you turn or flip an object in drawing software running: in use save: to store information on a computer disk save as: used when you want to save a file with a different name scale tool: tool that lets you change the size of an object in drawing software scanner: input device that uses light-sensing equipment to translate images or text from paper into digital files script: describes what will be said and what will happen visually scroll bar: vertical or horizontal arrows to click that allow you to see parts of windows that do not fit in the current viewing size window select: to choose server: a computer that stores Internet information and is accessed by other computers; computer that provides resources for a network Settings menu: menu of programs that control things like the volume of your speakers, the look of your screen, the way the keyboard and the mouse function, and the way you access your files shadow: font effect that gives letters a shadow behind them Shift key: key found on both sides of your keyboard; used to make capital letters and symbols smart quotes: curved quotation marks used to separate dialogue and other text from the rest of a document software: the general term for all the different kinds of programs that computers use spacing: the amount of white space between lines of text spell checker: tool that can be used to find most spelling mistakes spinner: up or down arrow that allows you to increase or decrease a number in a dialog box sstart menu: the list of all available programs on the desktop of a PC; located in the bottom lefthand corner of the desktop Stop button: button in the web browser toolbar that looks like a stop sign or an X; clicking it stops the downloading process; in video editing software, button with a square on it that tells the program to stop recording strikethrough: font effect that puts a horizontal line through text stroke: another word for border in drawing software submenu: menu that drops down from another menu to provide additional options subscript: font option that places selected text slightly below a character and decreases its font size superscript: font option that elevates the position of selected text and decreases its font size synopsis: an outline that describes the general idea 262
