Human-Environmental Interaction - Activity 1. Climate Zones *** If you have not gone through the preparation of this topic yet, please click here. *** *** The red circle(s) on the screen shots indicate the location of the tool or button you must use. *** 1. Click this link. The map layer is from Esri. If you want to know about a layer, click here. 2. This is the prepared map for this activity. Once the map is loaded, save this map in your Esri account using Save. 3. Click the Layers tool. 4. Click the details of the Climate Zones layer.
5. In the Layer Details window, click Configure in the row labeled Display. 6. Click the drop-down menu Single Symbol, and then choose Unique Values. Read its definition below. For more information about Unique Values, click here.
7. Make sure that the field of Attribute is set to CLIMATE. 8. I recommend that you choose a color that can reflect a specific climate zone, for example, brown for arid, green for tropical, and grey for tundra. Here is a map you can refer to. Click here. 9. Now I will show you how to change a color. Let s start with subarctic. Click details of Subarctic. You will need to scroll down to find Subarctic.
10. Click Background Color. 11. Subarctic on the reference map is light purple. Choose the color you think is closest to the color on the reference map. Then click the arrow button to go to the previous option.
12. Click Outline Color. 13. Choose the same color, and click the arrow button.
14. Click the arrow button again to go back to Configure Display. 15. Follow the previous steps from #9 to #14 for the other climate zones. Once you are done, click Done.
16. Your map may look like the following: 17. The second part of the activity is attaching pictures of traditional housing and land use types of different climate zones. I collected pictures and their URLs for you, but you can always use your own pictures. If you do not know how to find the URL of an image, please click here. I only collected pictures that have unique characteristics. Therefore, some climate zones do not have any related pictures. The links of pictures are here: Images of traditional housing types and Images of land use types. 18. I will show you how to attach those pictures on the map. As an example, let s do it with the arid climate zone. 19. Mud is a resource that people in the arid climate zone can get easily, especially where wood is not available to build with and energy is not available to make brick. Mud helps to cool down the temperature inside of the house during day time and keep warm during night. Therefore, mud is very useful for areas with a large daily temperature range. Also, mud is useful to withstand strong wind. The main land use type of this climate zone is nomadic herding. I found images of mud houses in Saudi Arabia and nomadic herding in Tunisia.
20. Find the location of these countries. Type Saudi Arabia in the Find Places box, and hit the enter key. 21. Click the + sign, and then choose Map Notes. 22. Now you can see a green point symbol.
23. Click the point symbol, and then choose Edit. Then click Edit Pop-up. 24. Change the title, and add description and the URL of the image. Once you are done, click OK.
25. Now we will attach a picture for the arid land use type, nomadic herding in Tunisia. Find the location of Tunisia using the Find Places function. 26. The center of Tunisia is in the semi-arid climate zone. We will move the point symbol to the arid climate zone. 27. Click the + sign, and then choose Map Notes. 28. Now you can see a green point symbol.
29. Click the point symbol, and then choose Edit. Then click Edit Shape. 30. The point symbol is now movable. Move it to the arid climate zone. Then click Done. 31. Repeat the previous steps #23 and #24 to add a title, description and a URL of an image.
32. We need to change the color of the point symbol for land use types to another color. To do that, click the point symbol, and then choose Edit. Then click Change Symbol. Or, click the Change Symbol tool on the main toolbar. (Image source: By Priit Kallas.Pk2000 at en.wikipedia [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons) 33. Choose one of the stickpins. However, do not use green since we have already used this color to mark traditional housing types.
34. Your map may look like the following: 35. Follow the previous steps from #20 to #33 for the other climate zones. You might need to move the point symbol like the one in Tunisia. Also, if there is more than one picture for one country, move the point symbols apart by moving one to other location in the same country. Do not forget to change the color of the point symbols for land use types. Be sure to use one color for all of the pictures of housing types and a contrasting color for all of the pictures of land use types. 36. Here is my final map.
Discussion questions o What are the determining factors of a region s climate? o What factors help account for the different housing/land use types in the different climate zones? o How do people choose materials to construct a house? o What do you think about the current trends of housing types? Are they becoming similar, or maintaining traditional ways based on different climate zones? (use images of urban housing types) Does climate have less influence on housing types in modern times? o What materials is your house made out of? Additional sources o Blue Planet Biomes - Our Planet
