General 2.1 Start of Call Ver. 8/27/96 Page General 2.1 Start of Call This is the entry point for all fault isolation procedures (FIPs), service mode diagnostics and factory adjustments, and general parts related information. This section presents: 1. The service approach and service flowchart (Figure 2-1 "Service Flowchart" on page 2-2). 2. Identifying the problem (2.1.1 "Identify the Problem" on page 2-3). 3. Using the fault isolation procedures (FIPs) and service mode diagnostics (2.1.2 "Using the Fault Isolation Procedures (FIPs) and Service Mode Diagnostics" on page 2-3). 4. Final checkout (2.1.3 "Final Checkout" on page 2-6). 5. Using print samples (2.1.4 "Print Samples" on page 2-7). The Service Flowchart (Figure 2-1 "Service Flowchart" on page 2-2) outlines an approach to troubleshooting and repair of the printer. The Service Flowchart is an overview of the path a service technician could take, using this service manual, to service the printer and its options. To use the Service Flowchart, start at Block 1. Block 1 has you go to Section of the technical manual to identify the problem. When the problem is identified, return to the Service Flowchart and proceed to Block 2. Continue in this manner, always returning to the next block in the Service Flowchart after you have completed the tasks outlined in the current block. If you choose not to use the Service Flowchart, start with section "The FIP Error Codes Table" on page 4-2, determine the appropriate Fault Isolation Procedure (FIP) and proceed from there. In many cases, merely replacing the EP Cartridge could solve the printer problem.
General 2.1 Start of Call Ver. 8/27/96 Page Section Identify the Problem 1. Error code 2. Printer performance 3. Image quality 4. Other problem 2 3 Section 4 Fault Isolation Procedures Use the Fault Isolation Procedures (FIPs) to find the cause of the problem. Section 7 Correct the Problem Use the Removal and Replacement Procedures (RRPs) to fix the problem. 4 Section Final Checkout Test the printer to be sure you corrected the initial problem and there are no additional problems present. Figure 2-1. Service Flowchart
General Identify the Problem Ver. 8/27/96 Page Identify the Problem 1. Verify that the reported problem does exist. 2. Check for any error codes. 3. Print three test prints. (See "Print Samples" on page 2-7.) 4. Note any print quality problems in the three test prints. 5. Note any mechanical or electrical abnormalities. 6. Note any unusual noise or smell coming from the printer. 7. When you have identified the problem, go to the next block in the Service Flowchart Using the Fault Isolation Procedures (FIPs) and Service Mode Diagnostics FIPs, the service mode diagnostic codes, and factory adjustment codes help you to diagnose problems with the print engine and control unit FIPs 1. Each numbered step in a FIP instructs you to perform an action or procedure. 2. The instruction is followed by a question. 3. If your response to the question is Yes, follow the instructions for a Yes reply. If your response to the question is No, follow the instructions for a No reply.
General Using the Fault Isolation Procedures (FIPs) and Service Mode Ver. 8/27/96 Page Unless indicated otherwise, the instruction "switch on main power" means for you to switch on printer power, let the printer proceed through power-on diagnostics and warm-up until it is on-line and ready to print. 5. FIPs often ask you to take voltage readings at test points in the printer. Section 8, Plug/Jack (P/J) Locations and Wiring Diagrams contains information on signal names and test point locations. 6. Conventions used to represent connectors: P/J XX means a plug and its corresponding jack are connected. PXX means a plug is disconnected. (Unless this plug is soldered to a PWB.) JXX means a jack is disconnected. (Unless this jack is soldered to a PWB.) 7. When you take a voltage reading between "P/J A B and P/J X Y", place the red probe (+) of your meter on pin B of P/J A and place the black probe ( ) on pin Y of P/J X. 8. When you take voltage readings between "P/J X and P/J Y" (without specified pin numbers), check all voltage carrying pins. Refer to Section 8, Plug/Jack (P/J) Locations and Wiring Diagrams for signals and pin numbers. 9. When you take a voltage reading, the black probe ( ) is generally connected to a pin that is either RTN (Return) or SG (Signal Ground). You can substitute any RTN pin or test point in the printer, and you can use FG (Frame Ground) in place of any SG pin or test point. 10. Unless a FIP instructs you otherwise, make sure the printer is switched on, the EP cartridge and cassette assembly 250 are installed, and the front and rear covers are closed (interlock switches are actuated) before measuring voltages. 11. All voltages in the FIPs are approximate values. Measured voltages may vary from the given values. 12. FIPs may instruct you to remove or replace a component. Refer to Section 7, Removal and Replacement Procedures (RRPs), for information on how to remove and replace a component.
General Using the Fault Isolation Procedures (FIPs) and Service Mode Ver. 8/27/96 Page Service Mode Diagnostics and Factory Adjustments Menus This section tells you how to execute and use the diagnostic utilities for troubleshooting and maintaining the printer. Diagnostics can be run for the Print Engine and for the Control Unit. See Section 5 "Service Mode: Diagnostics and Factory Adjustments Menus" on page 5-1. Factory adjustments are used to register the image on the paper, set the size of paper fed from the auxiliary and envelope trays, intensity of laser output, and set the fuser temperature. Use the operator panel keys for input. The operator panel displays menu selections, messages, and test results. To run any diagnostic or factory adjustment: 1. Ensure the printer is offline. 2. Hold the ITEM and PLUS keys down for 4 to 5 seconds. 3. In the service mode, press MENU. 4. Press MENU to step through the two service menus. 5. Stop pressing MENU when you have selected the service menu you want to run. 6. Select the diagnostic or factory adjustment desired. (See "Diagnostics Menu (Hidden Menu)" on page 2-27 or "Factory Adjustments Menu (Hidden Menu)" on page 2-28.) 7. Press ENTER to start a diagnostic. 8. Press ENTER again to stop the diagnostic. NOTE: If you are running a test to check a solenoid or motor which is not installed on the printer, the message TEST NOT VALID displays.
General Final Checkout Ver. 8/27/96 Page Final Checkout 1. Reinstall all of the covers. 2. Check that any error code is gone and there are no new error codes. 3. Print a series of test prints.the printer should generate the test prints without jamming and without any print image defects. 4. Note any mechanical or electrical abnormalities.the printer should run through the print cycle without any problems. 5. Note any unusual noise or smell coming from the printer. During the print cycle there should be no unusual noises or smells coming from the printer. 6. The servicing is completed.
General Print Samples Ver. 8/27/96 Page Print Samples The operator or the customer engineer runs print samples to verify printer function, when diagnosing a problem or to verify a fix. Running test prints exercises the hardware and logic functions of the printer. To run prints from the Test Menu: 1. Press the Online key to take the printer off-line. 2. Press MENU to enter the Test Menu. 3. Press ITEM to step through the tests or items. 4. Select the print sample to be printed. 5. Press ENTER to begin printing. The display will show PRINTING..., and READY. The data is formatted and the sample is printed. 2 Gener al
