8 UNIT TWO A computer This is a computer. A computer is a machine that counts, calculates and draws. Have you ever seen a computer? It thinks and calculates faster than you. It is spelt C O M P U T E R. 3

12 Activities 1 Now, write the parts of a computer. 2 Look at the computer in your computer room. Can you see all these parts? Name and touch them. Are there other parts of the computer which you cannot see in the photograph above? How many are they? 7

13 UNIT FOUR The monitor This is a monitor. It shows everything that we type into the computer. It also shows the games we play on the computer. What can you see on the monitor? 8

14 Activities Look carefully at the television in your house. 1 Does the television look like the monitor? 2 How is the monitor in your school s computer room different from the television at home? There are two types of monitors colour and monochrome monitors. colour monitor The colour monitor shows more than two colours. They are beautiful colours. They are the colours of the rainbow. 9

15 monochrome monitor The monochrome monitor shows only two colours. These colours are black and white. On which type of monitor would you like to play games? Do you have a monochrome or colour monitor in your school? 10

17 UNIT FIVE The system unit This is a system unit. It is also called the central processing unit or the CPU. We count, calculate and do many other activities on the system unit. The system unit also stores what we type into the 12

18 computer. We can make use of what is stored in the system when it is needed. Activities 1 Which part of your body works like the system unit of a computer? 2 What makes you think so? 13

19 UNIT six The keyboard Have you ever seen a typewriter? Which part of the typewriter looks like the picture above? This is the keyboard of a computer. A typewriter also has a keyboard. 14

20 The keyboard of a typewriter is like the keyboard of a computer. A keyboard contains letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z. The keyboard also contains the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The keyboard is used for typing into the computer. We see whatever is typed into the computer on the monitor. UNIT SEVEN Other parts of a computer In this Unit, we will talk about some other parts of the computer system. This part of the computer is called a mouse.

Why do you think it has been given this name? The mouse is used for sending messages into the computer. There are two buttons on the mouse. To send a message, we click one button once or twice. 17

23 This is a printer. Messages typed into the computer can be shown on paper. This is done by using the printer. Is there a printer in your school s computer room? Your teacher will show you how to use the printer. 18

24 These are speakers. Sometimes the computer talks to us. We can hear this through the speakers. The computer makes other sounds. We also hear the sounds through the speakers. The computer also plays music recorded on CD- ROMs. We listen to such music through the speakers. 19

25 Activities 1 In Unit 6, you used the keyboard to type a letter to your best friend. Now, print a copy of the letter on paper using the printer in your computer room. 2 Name and write the following parts of the computer. 20

26 UNIT EIGHT Uses of computers (1) A computer can be used to type letters. In the above, Dada is writing a letter to his aunt, Auntie Efe. A computer can also be used to type other documents. 21

27 Artists and other computer users make use of computers to draw. Activities 1 Use the school s computer to write a letter to your parents asking them to buy a computer for you. Print out the letter on paper. 2 Draw a circle using the computer. 22

28 UNIT NINE Uses of computers (2) We play games on the computer. There are many of these games. They are called computer games. Which computer game can you play? 23

29 Activities 1 Mention all the computer games you know. How many of them can you play? 2 Play one of the computer games with your classmate. Who is the winner? Computers are used for playing music stored in the audio CD. Computers are used for sending and receiving messages, known as the . 24

30 Computers can also be used for buying and selling. This is done through the internet. Money can also be sent and received through the banks with the use of computers. 25

31 UNIT TEN Uses of computers (3) In your school s office, there are many paper files. They contain records of all the pupils, including yourself. These files also contain records of the teachers in your school. 26

32 Computers can also store the records of all the pupils and teachers in your school. They are stored as message files kept inside the computer. These records can be obtained from the computer when needed. In schools, timetables are also made with the use of computers. 27

33 Activity Your computer teacher will invite your headteacher to give a talk to your class. The talk will be on how your school s records are kept. 28

34 UNIT ELEVEN Where computers are used (1) At home Computers are used at home for teaching and learning. Do you have a computer in your home? 29
