1 BUSINESS NAME How to Backup Your Computer Administrative Technology January 2019 Before you begin, you will need to have a flash drive or external hard drive plugged in to copy your files to. You also need to know where your files reside. The most common areas are shown here but if you save files elsewhere, remember to also back those up too. Saving your files In the bottom left hand corner, click to open File Explorer, the icon looks like a Desktop Documents Internet Explorer Favorites: Your desktop, documents section (if you save files there) and Internet Explorer Favorites can be saved at the same time. Navigate to OS (C:)\Users\Your Userid (scortez in the screenshot). On the right hand side, you will see Desktop, Documents and Favorites. Highlight the ones you need to save and drag left to your flash or external drive. Data Files: click on OS (C:). Move your Data file, along with any other important files to your flash or external drive. Verify that your files have been saved. Click on your flash or external drive to check.

2 P age 2 Browser Favorites Firefox Favorites: you w ill be exporting your bookmarks into an HTML file to save and you can also import this file into a new computer. Click on the Library icon in the upper right hand corner and navigate to Bookmarks. Scroll to the bottom and click on Show all Bookmarks. In the library window, click on Import and Backup, then Export Bookmarks to HTML In the Export Bookmarks File window, choose a location to save the file. If you are backing up your computer and favorites, save to your flash or external drive. The default file name bookmarks.html can be renamed. Click on the Save button and close the Library window. In File Explorer, make sure your file has been saved to your flash or external drive. Ad minis tra tive Te chno log y

3 How to Backup Your Computer Page 3 Chrome Favorites: In the upper right hand corner, click on the vertical ellipsis icon. Select Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager. Click on the vertical ellipsis icon Choose Export bookmarks. again. You will be exporting your bookmarks into an HTML file to save and you can also import this file into a new computer. In the Save As window, choose a location to save the file. If you are backing up your computer and favorites, save to your flash or external drive. The default file name bookmarks_current date.html can be renamed. Click on the Save button. In File Explorer, make sure your file has been saved to your flash or external drive.

Click on the Hub icon in the upper right hand corner then the Settings link. Scroll down and click on Import from another browser. Under Import or export a file, click the Export to file button. In the Save As window, choose a location to save the file. If you are backing up your computer and favorites, save to your flash or external drive. Name your file and click on the Save button. In File Explorer, make sure your file has been saved to your flash or external drive.

5 How to Backup Your Computer Page 5 Archive and Personal Folders If you have old archive or personal folders in Outlook that cannot be backed up to the server, these need to be saved to a.pst file to be imported back into your new computer. In Outlook, click on File. Click on Open & Export and then Import/Export to open the Wizard file. Click on Export to a file and Next. Click on Outlook Data File (.pst) and Next.

6 Page 6 Administrative Technology Choose the file(s), such as Archive or Personal Folders, you need to back-up and click on Next. Click on Browse. Navigate to your external flash or hard drive. Name your file and click on OK. Make sure your file will be exported to the correct path and click on Finish.

7 How to Backup Your Computer Page 7 In File Explorer, verify that your.pst file has been saved. Special Software or Programs If you have any special software, have the disk or link to download from a website ready for your ITC to install. Windows 10 standard software includes Office 2016 (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat CC. Moving Your Files Back Once your computer has been upgraded, you are ready to move your files back. Plug in your flash or external hard drive. In the bottom left-hand corner, open File Explorer. Desktop Documents Internet Explorer Favorites: navigate to your flash or external drive, make sure your files are showing on the right. Then navigate to OS (C:)\Users\Your Userid (scortez in the screenshot). Move the corresponding files from the flash or external drive over to OS (C:). C m Data: Move the Data file from the flash or external drive over to OS (C:). Firefox Fav favorites, in t on Star icon If you saved files in other locations, make sure to move those over to your new computer.

8 H o w t o Bac k up Y o ur Com p u ter Import Firefox and Chrome Favorites: Firefox click on the Library icon and then click on Bookmarks. Scroll to the bottom and click on Show all Bookmarks. In the Library window, click on Import and Backup and choose Import Bookmarks from HTML In the Import Bookmarks File window, navigate to your flash or external hard drive and the HTML file you are importing into Firefox. Select the file and click on Open. Close the Library window. Your bookmarks in the HTML file will be added to your Firefox bookmarks in the Bookmarks Menu directory. Chrome click on the vertical ellipsis then Bookmarks and Import bookmarks and settings. Click on the drop down and choose Bookmarks HTML File then click on Choose File. Choose another browser if you want to import those bookmarks. P age 8

9 Page 9 Administrative Technology Edge click on the Hub icon and go to Settings, Under Import favorites and other info, click on the Import from another browser button. Navigate to the file in your flash or external drive. Click on Open, your Edge favorites have been saved to your computer.
