Jessica Lemieux Lynn Gingras Prof. Agarwal LIS 488-OL March 3, 2014 Tutorial: Jing What is Jing? Jing is a program available for free download onto your desktop for quick use. Jing allows users to take screenshots or create videos of text, photographs, or other items on your computer screen that can be saved and easily shared using a URL. Jing allows for captured images and videos to be edited including placing text on images. This tutorial discusses the free version of Jing. How to Download Jing 1. Jing is simple and easy to download. Go to: 2. Click free download in the blue box to the top right. 3. Download a computer compatible version depending on whether you use a Mac or a PC. 4. Follow all the prompts (you will be asked to save, run the program, etc.). 5. You will have to create an account to use the program. When you have finished downloading Jing, the program will be saved on your desktop as a yellow half-circle somewhere along the perimeter of your screen. This icon is moveable by clicking and dragging it to another spot along the screen s perimeter. When you mouse over this icon, it will display three clickable options which are labeled as capture, history, and more (see image below). Capture allows you to take a screenshot or video. History is where past images and videos are stored. More allows you to alter settings and preferences. Once you have downloaded Jing, the sun icon on your desktop will leave you logged in,
so whenever you want to use Jing, you do not have to log in. Simply click on the sun and take your screen shot. Helpful hint: If you are on the homepage for Jing, scroll to the bottom left corner. There you can find multiple tutorials on how to use Jing. Image credit: Using Jing: Screen Captures 1. Taking a screen capture is made easy with Jing. 2. Simply click on the first ray of the sun icon with the crosshairs. This is the capture button (if you have a browser open, Jing is still visible behind the top bar. Hover over the sun and it will come forward allowing you to click on any of the three rays). 3. Your mouse will turn into a crosshairs. 4. Click to the top left of the image you want to capture and drag the mouse. A box will form around the image you want. Move the mouse to make the box smaller or larger.
5. Once you release the mouse, a bar with various options will appear to the bottom left of the image. Your options are to capture an image, capture a video, redo, or cancel. 6. Click on capture image to take a photograph. 7. Your image will appear in a new window. 8. Here you have the option to name your image. Along the vertical bar to the right, you can add text (and edit font, type size, etc.), frame the image, or highlight any part of it. 9. The toolbar along the bottom left allows you to share the image (or video, depending on what you capture) to Screencast, save the image or video, copy it, or cancel. 10. Click save and the computer will prompt you to select where you want to save the image or video. Here is a screen capture I took with Jing of our Moodle page. Note how Jing allows you to create text on a screen capture. Using Jing: Video Recording To create a video recording follow the steps above for capturing an image with these variations:
6a. Click on capture video on the option bar at the bottom left of your screen. If this is the first time you are capturing a video in Jing, a box will appear asking you to select an audio device. For example, an internal microphone or external microphone. Most laptops have an internal microphone already installed. 7a. There is a three second countdown before the recording begins. The area being recorded is framed in a yellow filmstrip. While recording you can select pause and restart or stop. Pause allows you to gather your thoughts or bring up a new area to record. When you select pause you will see the pause option has turned into play. Click play to resume recording. Restart allows you to begin again if you make an error. Stop will end the recording. Keep in mind, Jing videos have a five minute limit. This makes Jing perfect for quick videos, but not the right tool for longer presentations. 8a. After stopping the recording you will be able to watch it and choose whether to keep it or delete it. If you choose to keep the recording you will be prompted to name it. Jing and Screencast Once you sign up for Jing and download the program to your computer, you can get a free Screencast account. When taking a screen capture or video with Jing, once you have taken the capture, the row of icons at the bottom of your image or video will give you options to share, save, or copy. The first icon with the three arrows is the share to Screencast button. This will upload your image or video to Screencast for quick and easy sharing. Frequently Asked Questions 1. What pre-requisites are there to learning this technology? The Jing application is basic and easy to use. As long as an individual has a basic understanding of how to use a computer, how to download and save files, and the
ability to understand the operations Jing performs, it can be learned quickly. The Jing website also supplies helpful tutorials to guide new users through the process of using Jing. 2. What is the value of the technology? Jing is a free and easy way to capture a screen shot or video because the tool is right on your desktop. Jing makes it easy to capture an image to save and share with friends, family, or colleagues. It also makes video recording simple. Those who wish to make tutorials, create short videos of PowerPoint presentations, or even videos of personal photographs can do so with just a few clicks. Jing is accessible to the average computer user, as it does not require extensive technological knowledge to be used effectively. Many ages and many levels of technological ability will be able to use Jing. This program can be a great tool for librarians because it is a quick and easy way to transfer information or create instructional videos. It can be used as a gateway for e-learning in libraries, as well as a helpful reference tool. 3. What steps are necessary to get started? Before downloading, the user should have a basic understanding of what screen captures are and be certain this is the program they want to install. Downloading Jing is simple and easy (for instructions please refer to the beginning of this tutorial). Jing downloads within a matter of minutes and the sun shaped icon sits on your desktop for easy access. Once Jing has been downloaded a screen capture tutorial automatically begins immediately assisting the new user. For someone who is unfamiliar or uncomfortable with technology use, Jing offers plenty of
tutorials on all of its aspects. For someone who is just starting to use technology, the tutorials are a great way to start. The technology is extremely user friendly and easy to navigate. For those who are more confident with their technological abilities, Jing can easily be learned through practice. 4. What resources can be used to continue learning? To gain further information on screen captures, users can turn to Wikipedia for a basic understanding of what screen captures are and how they work. For tutorials on screen captures, users can turn to Lynda.com for video tutorials on screen capture programs including Jing. YouTube also carries videos assisting those who seek information on screen capturing and Jing. To further understand and use Jing, users should turn to techsmith.com/jing where they can access multiple tutorials on the various capabilities and features of Jing. There are also multiple reviews and assessments of Jing that can be accessed with a quick web search. The review at edjudo.com is short, concise, and thorough.
