Microsoft Office Word 2010 Inserting and Working with Pictures (Images) 1. Images in your work An image is a great way to liven up a document, but in academic uses is normally only included where something needs to be illustrated such as a specific theoretical model or where an image, illustration or photograph provides evidence for a discussion or argument. Other uses for images may be required by individual projects or assignments. Word 2010 also provides access to a ClipArt gallery and WordArt objects; both of which are available from the Insert tab on the Tools Ribbon. There is limited academic use for these tools and they are not discussed here. 2. Inserting an Image Select the point, in your document, where you would like to insert an image. Ensure that the Insert tab is selected on the Tools Ribbon. Click on Picture to insert a picture from your computer. You are now presented with a Browse window that will allow you to search your computer for the required image. Select the correct image file and click Insert to add it to your document. Tip: If the image is stored on your Pendrive select My Computer (in the Browse window) and then double-click your Pendrive to Browse there. 3. Resizing an Image When you insert an image into Word; the image is placed into the page using its full size, unless it is too large to fit on the page and then it is automatically resized to fit within the width or height of the page.

You can, however, Resize any image that you place into your document. Click on the Image Select one of the corner handles (shown here) Drag the handle in or out to increase or decrease the image size Tip: Resizing an image, on screen, does not reduce the file size of the image. If you place a large image into your document (i.e. 2mb); this will increase the size of your document by the same amount. This may make the document too large for sharing or ing. There are resizing tools built into Word, but these are not always ideal (mentioned below). At the time of writing and allow you to upload, shrink and download your image. You can also reduce the size of an image by using the tools available in Word Double-click on any image, in your document, and the top Tools Ribbon will change to allow you to Format the image. Near the left-hand side of the Format bar is the option to Compress Pictures. With a picture selected > click on the Compress Pictures button. You can then choose to Compress the current image or all images in this document. Choose to Optimise the image for Print or Screen use. And select to Compress and Delete cropped areas. Click on OK. You may not notice any significant difference in your images, but the file size should reduce. If your images become blurred undo these changes and leave the images as they were originally.

4. Aligning an Image By default; Word will place your image into the page using the alignment defined for that line of text. If you have centred your text the image will sit in the middle of the page. This is often useful enough when you want to drop an image into your document and then continue writing after it, but does not allow you to easily move the image around or place it exactly where you want to. These three images have been inserted into a Word document and have appeared alongside each other. Each one can be dragged to a higher or lower point in the document, but cannot be further manipulated or written around (as I have done here). To move an image around, more freely, double-click on an image to open the image Format bar. The main tool we are looking at here is the Wrap Text tool. Selecting the Wrap Text tool allows you to choose how you image appears within the text. In Line with Text is the default and sits the image below the previous line of text. One line of text is usually permitted to begin on the same line as the image. Square lets the image be moved to any position on the page and the text will wrap around it. This is the most common and probably the most useful one. Tight is similar to Square, but allows text to wrap around none-rectangular images. Through is similar to Tight, but allows complex shapes to be drawn. The text sits within the shape. Top and Bottom forces the lines of text to sit above and below the image. Behind Text and In Front of Text allows for images to be placed with text either in front or behind them.

With Square selected; you can now move the image to any position on the page and your text will wrap around it. 5. Adding Borders to an Image Placing borders around images can make your document more visually pleasing and help to define where your images end and your text begins. This is especially true when your image contains some text (like the example above). You can only add borders and some other effects, to images, once you have applied a Text Wrap to them. Double-click on an image and apply a Text Wrap (if one has not already been applied). With the Format bar open you will be able to see the Border tools. With your image highlighted the first step to take is to select a colour for the image border. This is labelled as Picture Border in the Format bar. Although Red is chosen, in this example, you should consider how your work will be presented and may want to choose Black or Greys for academic assessments.

You also have tools that allow you to change the style of the border around your image. The default options are for an unbroken line that is 3/4pt thick. You can change this to any combination of dots, dashes and thicknesses to suit your needs. Think carefully about how your work is to be viewed and you may want to keep the default choices for academic assessments. Examples: Default in Red 4.5pt in Red 2.25pt Dashed in Red 2.25pt Dotted in Red Tip: If you are adding borders to an image, in an academic assignment or presentation; consider adding borders to every image and using the same border style for each. This will provide consistency throughout the document rather than having some images with and some without and will show that you have taken care with the presentation of your document.
