1 EXPORT AND IMPORT INSTRUCTIONS FROM CONNECT TO CANVAS This document has been prepared by the Centre for Teaching & Learning, to assist in the transition from Connect to Canvas. For additional questions or concerns,
2 Connect to Canvas -> migration checklist and cleanup Once your course has been migrated, you might not find things to be where you expected. You might have organized tools and content in a way that made sense in Connect, but doesn t translate well in Canvas. We ve put together this list as a starting point for you to review your course and start getting it ready for delivery. Connect Canvas Announcements Assignments Calendar Discussions Grade Center Learning Modules, including: Blank Pages Files (eg. HTML, PDF, etc.) Items and/or Messages Journals, Blogs, Wikis Groups Rubrics Tests, Surveys and Pools Student View Syllabus Web Links LTI integrations/external apps Announcements Assignments Index Page (They may need some reorganization) Calendar Discussions (They may need some reorganization) Gradebook ( Grades on the menu) Modules Pages and/or Files Inbox/Conversations Does not import Does not import Rubrics Quizzes Student View Does not import Pages See notes below 12
3 Part 1: Step By Step Of Course Export From Connect To Canvas 1. As an instructor inside of your course, go to Control Panel > Packages and Utilities > on the left side of the screen and click Export/Archive Course 1 a 2. Click Export Package on the Action Bar 2 1
4 3. On the Export Course page, do the following: a. Select the option to Copy links and include copies of the files in the course default directory under Course Files Default Directory. b. Select the option to Copy links and include copies of the files in the course default directory under Files Outside of the Course Default Directory. c. Click Calculate Size to ensure that the package size does not exceed the displayed allowed package size (To remove files and folders from the package, click Manage Package Contents). *Canvas has a maximum of 4GB per course* 2
5 4. To customize what materials you would like to export, make sure to select/unselect as you see fit. When done click Submit. o If you select all only items with content will be exported. o You may not want to select items that were specific to the course 3
6 5. After clicking Submit, you should receive a Success notification. This may take several minutes to complete. Please refresh the page. 6. Once this is complete navigate back to the Export/Archive Course page (the previous page you were on) and click the name of the archive package to open the file and this will prompt you to download it as a.zip file on to your computer. Be sure to note where you save it, in most cases the.zip file will be found in the Downloads section of your computer. **We recommend to saving it on your desktop for easy access** Please note: You must have an existing course in Canvas (ex. ENGL 150) in order to import the course content from the Connect export. ** The following demo is done on a blank canvas course shell** 4
7 Part 2: Generic Step By Step Of Course Import From Connect To Canvas 1. To begin the import, you will need to log in to canvas using your CWL User ID and password. The Canvas website is canvas.ubc.ca a. Make sure that you have saved the Connect.Zip file course to your computer. We recommend saving it to your desktop for easy access. canvas.ubc.ca 2. Click on either the dashboard or courses tab from the far left column also known as the Global Navigation Menu and select the course you would like to import content to. a. Once you re in the course, locate the Course Navigation Menu, scroll to the bottom of this column and click on Settings, which opens a new menu on the far right side of your screen, called the sidebar. b. Scroll to the sidebar and locate Import Course Content click on it. b a 5
8 3. On the following page (as shown below) do the following : 6
9 a. Below the import content header, click on the drop down option to identify the course content, select Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export.zip file. b. On the source, browse to find the.zip file on your computer. Once found, click open and the file should appear beside the word Source. 7

Default question bank - use this option if you have quiz questions from Connect that you would like to import into a question bank on Canvas. o Choose Select question bank- if you have an existing question bank or choose create a new question, to create a new question bank. d. On the content section, be sure to select your course content preference. o Select all content to import everything in the zip file. o Select specific content to choose the specific files you would like to import within the.zip file. e. There are two other options before you import your course: - Overwrite assessment content with matching IDs *This function is not applicable when importing content from Connect* 8
11 - Adjust events and due dates o This gives you the option to shift or remove events and due dates. o If you choose to shift, Canvas will provide you with calendars to shift the dates forward or backwards. o If you would like to add more dates, click on +submission. f. Once you have chosen all applicable options, double check one more time and click Import. 4. Canvas will then begin the import by indicating running in the file uploading process and later displaying completed once the import is finished. 9

If you choose Select Specific Content on the previous screen (section 3c), the file display: waiting for selection and select content. o Choose which content you would like to import by checking the boxes o If there are arrows on the left hand side, this indicates folders with more files in them where you can chose more specific files 6. Once you have selected the content, canvas will mark indicate the status as completed. o Orange code indicates issues o Green code indicate no issues. 10

After the import completion, make sure to validate all of the imported links from Connect. o Go to the far right of the Settings page (refer to #2) o click on Validate Links in Content > > Start Link Validation>> 8.
