1 World Lit. Weebly Web Design 101 To begin using Weebly, go to weebly.com, and click on the Log in button in the top right corner. Use the Google+ button to login using your school gmail address and password. Find the Add a Site button, and click on it. Your site s focus will be a Site, so click accordingly. Your next task will be to choose a theme. There are a variety of templates you can choose from, and you can always pick a new theme later if you don t like what you originally choose, so don t spend more than about a minute picking a theme! Once you ve chosen your theme, you will need to name your page. Choose the first option, Use a subdomain of Weebly.com, and come up with a title for your site that is creative and school appropriate. A green checkmark will appear if your site title is available; once that happens, click continue. The next screen is your Page Editor. Here are the various features: The left side of the page are all the actions you can take to edit the page. You can add pictures and videos; you can insert text and a survey; you can include a map or a slideshow. Throughout the course, you will include most of these things, so take a moment to think about why you might include these elements. The buttons at the top are simply bookmarks so you can quickly jump to the elements in that portion of the editor. All of the information on the page is editable; simply click on what you want to change, and change it! If you d like to change the background image, you can do so by finding the Edit Image button. Make sure that any image you include on your page is free of copyright violations and is school appropriate! Weebly has a TON of great images to choose from, and once selected, there are a variety of stylistic changes you can make, so explore! In addition, when you re ready to publish/post your site, be sure to click the Publish button (something you MUST do everyone time you make changes to the site). In order to return to your weebly dashboard, click on the button in the top right.
2 As you begin editing the template, you simply need to replace the Latin text already in place with our own text (make sure to delete all the place holder text to avoid confusion, though!). You should also notice that, when you hover your mouse over certain elements, you can remove them by clicking on the x in the top right corner. If you would like to add additional elements to the page, simply click and drag the element from the menu on the left to where you would like to incorporate it on your page. ** This blue line indicates where the element will be dropped with relation to the existing elements. For example, in this situation, the image would be placed above the Skill One text.
3 The tool bar at the top of the page allows you to choose what actions you can perform. * Build: edit the page * Design: change the theme, fonts, and background image * Pages: add pages, as well as access existing pages * Store: we will NOT need this button since we are not creating an online store! * Settings: general settings of the page, like the site s title, its web address (which you can edit once you ve created your page), etc. IMPORTANT STEP! Before editing your page further, click on the Pages link, and scroll down until you find the Advanced Settings. When you expand this option, scroll to the bottom until you find the check box to Hide this page from search engines. Click this box; your page will still be accessible to the public, but this will provide you a little bit of security since people will need to know your address in order to access your site.
4 For the sake of ease, we will now establish all the pages that you will fill in throughout the course. Add a page by clicking the Add Page button. You will be prompted to select whether the page is a Standard Page, Blog Page, Store Page, or External Link. Below are the 5 total pages you will add to your site, along with the page designation. Be sure to type these headings into the Page Name field for ease of navigation later. About the Author (Standard Page) Literary Responses (Standard Page) Blog (Blog Page) Research (Standard Page) Lit Circle (Standard Page) IMPORTANT STEP! Remember earlier when you clicked that Hide this page from search engines box? Make sure you do that for EACH OF THESE PAGES YOU ADD! Website Assignment #1 Your first assignment on your webpage will be to complete the About the Author page. In order to begin editing that page, click the Design button from the tool bar, and then click the link for the About the Author page on your main page. On this page, you need to incorporate the following information (for the sake of internet safety, do not include your full name or any personal information that specifically identifies you, like home address, cell phone number, birthdate, address, etc.): A picture or image that symbolizes you or something in which you believe (do NOT use a pic of yourself!) A short bumper sticker phrase that is advice or a nugget of wisdom you live by (anyone who uses #YOLO! will automatically fail the assignment) A 1-2 paragraph explanation of a tradition that defines you A 1-2 paragraph explanation of why you are interested in the World Lit. course
5 As before, you can change the image on this page by clicking on the Edit image button on the bottom right of the image. In addition, depending on the theme/format you ve chosen, there will be an area on the page where you can insert your information either by clicking and dragging the elements you choose to use from the left side of the page. Your other option is to click the Choose a layout button, and pick a template that is already formatted and ready for you to insert your own images and text. If you adjust any of these options on the left (change theme, fonts, background), you will be required to click a Save button that will appear in the top right corner (where the Publish button is currently located). You can choose to apply your changes to all of your pages or to only this page, so pay attention! Remember: If you use a template and you want to delete an element, hover over the field until you can see the blue outline, and find the blue X in the top right corner of the element to delete it. You can then choose a different element from the menu on the left side to fill that space.
6 When you are done editing your page, you should do one of the following options: If you are NOT ready to publish your page, click on the button next to Publish to access the Exit Editor link. If you ARE ready to publish your page, click on the Publish button. When you do so, you will see this dialogue box: As long as you see the message Website Published! at the top, you can X-out of the box and go on about your day. ** The middle section of the box is trying to sell you a website domain name! If you click the continue button unwittingly, you will be directed to a site where you can buy that domain name DON T!
