4 1 Preface Thank you for purchasing the Kawasaki Diagnostic System KDS Ver. 3 (called KDS3 in this manual). This manual outlines the basic KDS3 installation operations for Kawasaki Motorcycle, Personal Watercraft, All Terrain Vehicle, Utility Vehicle, and Recreation Utility Vehicle dealerships. We assume that readers of this manual are knowledgeable about basic maintenance and technologies and are familiar with basic operations of a PC (Personal Computer). To fully utilize the KDS3 performance and functions, please read this manual thoroughly and familiarize yourself with the contents. Also, keep this manual on hand so that you can read it when necessary. Before starting to use KDS3, read the User License Agreement Kawasaki Diagnostic System Software on Page 8. 7 1 Preface 1-2 Precautions Safety Operating information Observe general safety rules to avoid a fire hazard, injury, or burn. Do not run the engine in a close area. Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, an odorless deadly poison. To avoid injury, do not place hands, feet, or tools near moving parts such as wheels or chain and sprockets. Preliminary inspection Check if enough fuel is remaining in the fuel tank. Check if the battery is charged enough to crank the engine. Visually inspect wires and connectors for damage or loose connections. Check that the battery s terminals are clean and secure. Check to see if the spark plugs are in good condition, and that the engine oil and coolant are full. Correct known problems such as a low battery, a bad electrical connection, or a loose fuel line before using KDS3. 7
8 1 Preface 1-3 User License Agreement Kawasaki Diagnostic System Software This User License Agreement ( AGREEMENT ) is a legal agreement between you (either an individual or a single entity) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., a Japanese company, ( Kawasaki ) for the Kawasaki Diagnostic System software ( SOFTWARE ). By installing, copying, or otherwise using the SOFTWARE, you shall agree to be bound by the terms of this AGREEMENT. If you do not agree to the terms of this AGREEMENT, promptly return the unused SOFTWARE to the supplier from which you obtained it for a full refund. 1. COPYRIGHT All title and copyrights in and to the SOFTWARE (including but not limited to any images, photographs, and text incorporated into the SOFTWARE) and the accompanying printed materials are owned by Kawasaki. The SOFTWARE is protected with copyright laws and international treaty provisions. 2. GRANT OF LICENSE (1) By purchasing the CD-ROM which has the SOFTWARE in it, you are granted license of Kawasaki s rights and you may use the SOFTWARE under following conditions (2) and (3). (2) USE: The SOFTWARE is licensed, not sold. You may install and use one copy of the SOFTWARE on your computer. (3) COPY: You may either (a) make one copy of the SOFTWARE solely for backup or archival purposes or (b) install the SOFTWARE on a single computer provided you keep the original solely for backup or archival purposes. All title and copyrights in and to the COPY are also owned by Kawasaki, and you may not use the COPY for any other purpose than to recover the SOFTWARE on your computer. 3. LIMITATIONS You may not modify, reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the SOFTWARE. 4. SOFTWARE TRANSFER You may permanently transfer all of your rights under this AGREEMENT when the recipient agrees to the terms of this AGREEMENT, provided you retain no copies, you transfer all of the CDROM and printed materials accompanied with it. 5. TERMINATION Without prejudice to any other rights, Kawasaki may terminate this AGREEMENT if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions of this AGREEMENT. In such event, you must uninstall the SOFTWARE and destroy all of the SOFTWARE, including its COPY if you have made one. 8

LIMITED WARRANTY Kawasaki warrants that the CD-ROM with the SOFTWARE be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase. Some countries, states or territories and jurisdictions do not allow limitations on duration of an implied warranty, so the above limitation may not apply to you. To the extent allowed by applicable law, implied warranties on the SOFTWARE are limited to ninety (90) days. (1) CUSTOMER REMEDIES: Kawasaki s and its suppliers entire liability and your exclusive remedy shall be, at Kawasaki s option, either (a) return of the price paid, or (b) replacement of the SOFTWARE. This Limited Warranty is void if failure of the SOFTWARE has resulted from accident, abuse or misapplication (2) NO OTHER WARRANTIES: To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Kawasaki and its suppliers disclaim all other merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, with regard to the SOFTWARE. This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may have others, which vary from country, state or territory and jurisdiction to country, state or territory and jurisdiction. (3) NO LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES: To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall Kawasaki or its suppliers be liable for any special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages whatsoever (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss) arising out of the use of or inability to use the SOFTWARE, even if Kawasaki has been advised of the possibility of such damages. Because some countries, states or territories and jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of liability for consequential or incidental damages, the above limitation may not apply to you. 7. EXPORT LIMITATION You shall agree not to export the CD-ROM with the SOFTWARE to foreign countries except for complying with local laws and rules. 8. COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION In case of trouble with the AGREEMENT, both parties assign Japan Commercial Arbitration Association and under the rule thereof to settle a dispute and the award thereof shall be final and binding upon both parties. 9
10 2 KDS3 Outline KDS3 was developed for diagnosis of the fuel injection system of all Kawasaki 4-stroke DFI equipped Models including motorcycles, All Terrain Vehicles, Utility Vehicles, Recreational Utility Vehicles, and Personal Watercraft. In addition it can diagnose problems with ABS and K-ACT-ABS equipped models. KDS3 is also used on KIPASS (Kawasaki Intelligent Proximity Activation Start System) equipped models to register related components. 2-1 What You Can Do Using the KDS3 software, you can do the following: Diagnosis ABS ECU PC You can obtain failure information, engine information and the ability to dynamically test system parts. KIPASS ECU Tire pressure sensor FOBs FI ECU Unit registration You can register the units to be controlled by the KIPASS ECU (Smart System). Meter unit Steering lock unit 10
11 2 KDS3 Outline Diagnosis KDS3 communicates with KIPASS, FI, and ABS ECUs to help diagnose problems. Failure information, inspection instructions and engine information can be displayed, saved on PC, or printed to help with the diagnosis process. Unit registration You can register the components that are controlled by the KIPASS ECU. Any components controlled by the KIPASS ECU cannot function correctly unless their authentication IDs have been registered. 11

17 To install the KDS 3 system, first install the KDS3 software then connect cables and device driver software. 4-1 Flow of service preparation Prepare the following items before using the KDS3 software. 18 4-2 Installing the KDS3 software Install the KDS3 software. For Windows 7/Vista/XP 32 bit, use the procedures shown on this page. For Windows 8/7 64 bit, see page 26. Windows 7/Vista/XP 32 bit NOTE If your PC is set up with administrator rights, you must log into Windows as an administrator or be given administrator rights to be able to install the system software. 1 Start the PC, and log on as a user with administrator privileges. 2 Insert the KDS3 CD-ROM. The installer will start automatically. NOTE If the [AutoPlay] window is opened, select the [Run InstKDS.exe] option. If the installer does not start automatically, double-click and open the InstKDS.exe file stored on the CD-ROM disk. 18
19 3 Select language, and click [OK]. The installation program starts. If you select [Japanese], the installation windows are displayed in the Japanese language. If you select any language other than [Japanese], the installation windows are displayed in English. (Reference) The message OS: 32Bit is displayed on the screen. NOTE If the [User Account Control] window is opened, select [Yes] for Windows 7 or select [Allow] for Windows Vista. Windows 7 Windows Vista 19
20 4 Click [Next]. The message The drivers are now installing is displayed. NOTE If the [Windows Security] window is opened, check to see that the [Always trust software from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.] the box has been unchecked and click [Install]. 20
21 5 When the [Completing the Device Driver Installation Wizard] window is opened, click [Finish]. NOTE If the [User Account Control] window is opened, select [Yes] for Windows 7 or select [Allow] for Windows Vista. Windows 7 Windows Vista 21

23 8 Click [Next]. The message Kawasaki Diagnostic System Ver. 3 is being installed is displayed. 9 When the message Installation Complete is displayed in the window, click [Close]. The installation process is finished. 23
24 10 Check to see that a [Kawasaki Diagnostic System Ver. 3] shortcut has been created on the desktop and on the Start menu. NOTE If the following window is opened, the installation of KDS3 software was not completed KDS3 software must be installed on the computer to be able to perform an update to the software. 25 Now, the KDS3 software has been installed successfully. NOTE KDS3 software is updated each year for new models, ensure that you have the latest KDS version. KDS3 software must be installed on the computer to be able to perform an update to the software. If you need to uninstall the KDS3 software, use the following procedure. Windows 7/Vista: Select [Uninstall a program] from the Control Panel and uninstall the Kawasaki Diagnostic System Ver. 3 software. Windows XP: Select [Add or Remove Programs] from the Control Panel and uninstall the Kawasaki Diagnostic System Ver. 3 software. 25
26 Windows 8/7 64 bit Install the KDS3 software. NOTE If your PC is set up with administrator rights, you must log into Windows as an administrator or be given administrator rights to be able to install the system software. 1 Start the PC, and log on as a user with administrator privileges. 2 Insert the KDS3 CD-ROM. 38 4-3 Connecting cables Connect cables to the ECU (KIPASS ECU, FI ECU, or ABS ECU). NOTE Be sure to keep the ignition switch in the OFF position during cable installation. Also, check the connector locations by referring to the vehicle service manual (and the connection guide). Connecting the cable to the KIPASS ECU This example uses the ZG1400A/B motorcycle. 1 Remove the seat. 2 Remove the 6-pin connector A on the main harness from its foam mount, then remove its cover. 3 Connect the KDS3 adapter B into the main harness connector A. 4 Connect the USB cable connector C to the KDS3 adapter. 38
39 Connecting the cable to the FI ECU (1) Models connected with the 6-pin and 4-pin/6-pin communication cable ( ): This example uses the ZG1400C/D motorcycles. 1 Remove the seat. 2 Remove the 6-pin connector A on the main harness from its foam mount, then remove its cover. 3 Connect the communication cable ( ) B into the main harness 6- pin connector A. 4 Connect the KDS3 adapter C into the communication cable ( ) B. 43 (5) Models connected with the 8-pin/4-pin communication cable ( ), 6-pin/8-pin communication cable ( ) and JT1500B/JT1500C/E/F/G adapter cable ( ): JT1500B/C/E/F/G 1 Open the front storage compartment cover. 2 Remove the front storage case. 3 Remove the KDS3 FI connector cover A located near the battery. 4 Connect the 4-pin communication cable ( ) into the FI connector on the main harness A. 5 Connect the 4-pin communication cable ( ) into the FI connector on the main harness A. 6 Connect the 6-pin connector on cable into the KDS3 adapter. 7 Connect the USB cable connector to the KDS3 adapter. 8 Disconnect the 6-pin connector B on the harness. 9 Insert communication cable ( ) between the 6-pin connectors on the harness. 43
44 10 Connect lead C on communication cable ( ). NOTE The relay cable must be connected to prevent loss of communication due to the ECU timing out if the engine is not started. (6) Models connected with the 8-pin/4-pin communication cable ( ) 6-pin/8-pin communication cable ( ) and JT1200B/JT1500A/D relay cable ( ): JT1200B/D, JT1500A/D 1 Remove the seat and the rear storage box. 2 Disconnect the 8-pin connector on the harness coming from the relay box, and insert communication cable ( ). 3 Connect the lead on communication cable ( ) to the battery s negative terminal. 4 Remove the KDS3 FI connector cover A located near the battery. 5 Connect the 4-pin communication cable ( ) into the FI connector on the main harness A. 6 Connect pin connector into the 8-pin connector on cable
45 7 Connect the 6-pin connector on cable into the KDS3 adapter. 8 Connect the USB cable connector to the KDS3 adapter. NOTE The relay cable must be connected to prevent loss of communication due to the ECU timing out if the engine is not started. (7) Models connected with the 8-pin/6-pin communication cable ( ): VN1500J/L/N/R 1 Remove the seat and battery holder. 2 Pull out the ECU A from the case. 3 Remove the 8-pin cover from ECU. 4 Plug the 8-pin connector of communication cable ( ) B into the 8-pin socket of ECU. 45

49 4-4 Installing the device driver software In order to use the KDS3 adapter, you need to first install the device driver software. Install the device driver software using the following procedure. 53 4 Select the [No, not this time] option, and click [Next]. The next window is opened. 5 Select [Install the software automatically (Recommended)] option, and click [Next]. The logo test confirmation message is displayed. 6 Click [Continue Anyway]. Installation of the driver begins. When installation is complete, the message Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard is displayed. 53
54 7 Check to see that KDS Adapter is displayed, and click [Finish]. The installation process is finished. (Reference) The new hardware name KDS Adapter is displayed on the PC. This indicates that the device driver software has been successfully installed. When the driver software is successfully installed, the [Device Manager] shows the KDS Adapter. You can display and check it as follows. 1. Be sure that the KDS hardware is connected then turn ON the ignition switch (do not start the engine). 2. Right-click the [My Computer] to open a shortcut menu, and click [Properties]. 3. Click the [Hardware] tab, and click [Device Manager]. 4. Click the [+] symbol of [Universal Serial Bus controllers].
