16 Ways to Buy Windows Desktop Licenses It s important to understand the various ways in which customers can acquire Windows desktop licenses. Below you will find a summary of the Microsoft Windows desktop licensing channels. Full underlying Windows Desktop Licenses Windows Desktop upgrade licenses only. OEM Retail Preinstalled by the PC manufacturer. Available to purchasers of new PCs only. For customers needing a small quantity of licenses. Sold in single-unit, shrinkwrapped boxes. For customers who need 5 or more licenses. Many customer programs and options such as Open License, Select License, and Enterprise Agreements. Full underlying Windows desktop licenses are not available under Volume Licensing only Windows desktop upgrades. I have a Volume Licensing. I can buy a naked PC from OEM. I am an education customer with CASA / MSDN Academic. I can buy naked PCs from OEMs. GGWA is perpetual and can be transferred from one PC to another I can buy naked PC and then buy GGWA to cover later Volume Licensing only cover Windows OS upgrade licenses CASA & MSDN AA cover Windows Upgrades only. GGWA is tied to the device on which software is first installed. Customers may not transfer the license without that device. GGWA is for existing PC.
