1 1 Creating and Manipulating Grade Scheme The default organization scheme is Percentage. You can stay with it or set up your own custom grade scheme(s) to fit your needs. For instance, you can set up a letter grade scheme with your symbols and grade ranges, select custom colors, and apply it to the entire grade book or to a particular item. 1. To create a New Grade Scheme: a. Click Grades on the course navbar, click the Grades Schemes link in the Grades Area on the left side of the screen. Click the New icon: b. Enter a scheme name (short name is optional) c. In the Ranges table, enter symbols (A, B, Excellent, Poor, etc.), if you would like to use them. The text or letters you put in the Symbol field will be displayed to students.

2 2 d. Enter the corresponding grade range with the lowest value in the Start % column and the highest value in the Assigned Value % column. You may also select a Color to be associated with each grade range (click small black arrows for each range in the Color column) e. To add more grade ranges, click Add Ranges at the bottom of the page. You can add more than one range at a time by entering the number of ranges and then clicking Add Ranges. f. To delete a grade range, click the Remove trash bin icon to the right of the range you would like to delete. Click Save. g. Once your grade scheme is completed, you need to make it active. Click the Schemes List icon at the top: On the Schemes List page, the green check mark indicates the default grade scheme: Percentage.

3 3 Simply click the grey check mark next to your New Grade Scheme you ve just created to turn it to the green mark, which indicates that your scheme will be active for the whole grade book. On the pop-up window, click Yes: Your new scheme is active now, and you can see how it affects your grade book by clicking the Enter Grades link in the Grades Area: 2. Creating and applying New Grade Scheme to a single grade item You can create a new grade scheme for a particular grade item (e.g. Midterm Grade). Go to Grades, click Grades Schemes in the Grades Area. Click the New icon. Enter the scheme name, for instance, Midterm Grade Enter symbols and ranges along with colors, if you choose to assign them. Click Save (see the steps a f above) NOTE: In your new scheme, do NOT use the same symbols that you used in your previously created grade schemes (A, B, C, A+, etc.). The similar symbols from different schemes will interfere with each other and create a mess in your grade book. As a result, grades will be inaccurate. You should also select other colors, if you would like to apply them, or just leave color fields blank.

4 4 Symbols must be different To make the scheme active for a particular grade item, perform the following steps: o Click the Manage Grades link in the Grades Area o Click the grade item link in the table, in our case: Midterm Grade

5 5 o On the Edit Item: page, in the Grading area, select the newly created Midterm Grade scheme in the Grade Scheme drop-down list. Click Save. o Click the Enter Grades link in the Grades Area. The new scheme is applied to the single grade item: Midterm Grade: 3. Copying Grade Scheme You can make copies of Grade Schemes, including copying from one course to another.

6 6 Click Grades Schemes in the Grades area Click the Copy icon at the top. Locate the course of which grade scheme you would like to copy. You can select the present course you are working on or another course with other schemes Select the scheme you want to copy from the course At the bottom of the screen, enter a new scheme name. Click the Copy button Make any changes to the scheme, if you would like. Click Save.

7 7 4. Deleting Grade Schemes On the Schemes List page, click the Delete icon at the top On the Delete page, select the scheme you would like to delete and click the Delete Selected button. On the pop-up window, click Delete again. NOTE: If a grade scheme is in use, you will not be able to delete it. The scheme is not selectable on the Delete page. You must first remove the scheme from any grade items that are utilizing it: o Click Manage Grades in the Grades Area o Click the grade item link in the table (e.g. Midterm Grade) that uses the grade scheme o From the Grade Scheme drop-down menu, simply deselect the scheme (select another one), click Save. o Get back to the Grades Schemes list and delete the scheme: it s selectable now. You cannot delete organizational schemes.
