1 Student Affairs: Remote Login Behind the Scenes: Before you can connect remotely to your office computer, your department will need to send a request to Help Desk asking for remote access, and providing your computer s serial number. Next, someone from Help Desk must enable your office computer for remote access. Your work computer must be powered on each time you wish to connect remotely, but you do not need to be logged in. PC ON YOUR HOME COMPUTER OR LAPTOP: Phase One Determine if your computer has 64-bit or 32-bit capability 1. Look at your computer s System Properties. You can do this by going to the Control Panel, then opening Systems. You may also right click on the Computer icon on your desktop and clicking on Properties. 2. Look at System Type to see if it shows 64-bit Operating System. Phase Two Install Global Protect on your computer 1. Open your web browser and go to 2. Type in your username and password, just as you do at work.

2 3. Click the appropriate option for your computer. Download and install GlobalProtect Phase Three Running Global Protect 1. You will see this globe icon appear in the lower right corner of your computer. When it has the red circle and white X you are disconnected. To connect, you need to right click it and select connect from the menu.

3 2. At this window, enter your user name, and password as you would at work. NOTE: On subsequent connections, the window may look like this. By the end of Phases Two and Three you have downloaded and installed GlobalProtect, and can use it to connect. In this case, connecting means getting through the Student Affairs firewall.

4 Phase Four Connect to your computer Before Phase Four you must be connected via Global Protect. 1. Click on the Start button, 2. In the search box type: MSTSC. This stands for MicroSoft Terminal Services Client. 3. The window that opens will prompt for Computer: Type in your username followed by.desktop.sa.ucsb.edu. See image below.

5 4. At this screen enter your work username and password. If your office computer is Windows 7 it is essential you include sa\ before your name. NOTE: You may see this pop up during your connection. Click Yes.

6 Logging Out On your work computer, go to the Start button and select Log Out. You will still be connected with Global Protect until you right click to disconnect, or it times out. Subsequent Connections 1. Repeat the steps in Phases Three and Four above to connect with GlobalProtect, and to run MSTSC.

7 Macintosh Phase One update the software on your computer 1. Open your web browser and go to 2. When you are prompted to download Palo Alto GlobalProtect, please do so. 3. Say yes and/or trust to any messages you get regarding the certificate or website 4. Go to and install Remote Desktop. Phase Phase Two Sign in to the Palo Alto Firewall 1. GlobalProtect should be an icon in the top right corner.. Opening this will prompt you to log in. 2. Type in your Student Affairs username and password, just like at work (e.g. TRAINER-S, Pa$$w0rd) 3. The portal is passport.sa.ucsb.edu. Phase Three Connect to your computer Open RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) on your computer. The window that opens will prompt for Computer: Type in your username followed by.desktop.sa.ucsb.edu. (example: trainer-s.desktop.sa.ucsb.edu). Change the domain to only SA (no quotes).

8 Phase Four Log in to your Computer Logging Out You are looking at your office computer log in screen. Log in with your password just as you would at work, HOWEVER you may need to type SA\ before your name. (Example: SA\trainer-s) On your work computer, go to the Start button and select Log Out Subsequent Connections Start with Phase Two from above, and proceed from there. NOTE: You may see this message during the connection process. Click Connect.
