2 Setting up a Printer for Initial Use In order to use your printer, you will have to go through some initial configuration. There are two main steps to configuring it: Making sure that it is ready for configuration, and then setting the printer s IP address. Confirm that the printer is ready for configuration 1) Run Label Vista. If it is not installed, Label Vista is available as a free download from Zebra.com. 2) Select Printer -> Com Port Setup. 3) Make sure Port is set to USB and USB Device is set to RW 420. Then Click OK. 4) Go to Printer -> Read Files. iphone/ipod + Zebra Printer Combination 1

3 5) Make sure the Printer Files exist in the printer. Configure the Printer s IP Address 1. Go to Printer -> Network Settings. 2. Select the Network tab. Configure IP Address and Network Port as in the following picture. Use the Printer s Serial Number as the ESSID. iphone/ipod + Zebra Printer Combination 2

4 3. Select the RF Settings tab. Set Operating Mode as AD HOC. Click OK to save the changes. Click OK to save the changes. 4. At this point you have successfully set up your Printer for initial usage. iphone/ipod + Zebra Printer Combination 3

5 How to connect to a printer In order to print an invoice from Encompass, you will need to connect your ipod to the printer and then set it up inside of Encompass itself. 1) Turn on the Zebra Printer by hitting the green power button on the front face. A splash screen with the Zebra logo will show while it loads. 2) After the Zebra printer has finished loading, go back to your ipod/iphone. Tap the Settings icon located on the home screen or app tray. 3) From the Settings menu, tap the Wi-Fi option. 4) Select the Zebra printer from the list of available Wi-Fi networks. The printer will show up on the Wi-Fi menu with the name of its serial number (S\N). This is usually a 12 digit number that is broken into 3 parts. It can be found on the label on the bottom of your Zebra Printer. If more than one Zebra printer is showing up, an easy way to make sure that you are connecting to the right one is to make sure that the last four digits of the serial number match the one on your printer. NOTE: The printer may not show up immediately. The Wi-Fi list refreshes periodically and it will eventually show up. 5) You are now connected to the Zebra Printer. If you have done this correctly, a blue check mark should appear next to the name of the printer under the Wi-Fi list. Note: You will still need to set the printer s connection type in Encompass in order to print to it. This is covered in the section titled How to set the printer setting in Encompass iphone/ipod + Zebra Printer Combination 4

6 How to set the printer setting in Encompass In order to print an invoice from Encompass, you will need to connect your ipod to the printer (See How to connect to a printer ), and then set it up inside of Encompass itself. If you do not do this step, an error message will occur when you try to print. 1) Tap the Control Panel option from the Encompass main menu. From menu that pops up, select Complete Settings. 2) Tap the name of the printer in the Printer Type box. This option will probably be near the bottom of the list of Complete Setting options. 3) From the popup, tap the type of Zebra Printer that you want to use. You should see a blue checkmark appear next to the correctly selected printer. 4) At this point, you have successfully selected the type of printer to use. After actually connecting to the printer (See How to Connect to a Printer for details), you will able to print from Encompass. iphone/ipod + Zebra Printer Combination 5

7 How to set a static IP on the ipod for a printer Setting your ipod s IP as static will make it so that the printer and ipod stay paired. By doing this step, you solve the issue of a printer disconnecting every time it or the ipod is reset. 1) Turn on the printer that you want to pair the ipod with. 2) Select Settings from the dock or home screen. From the Setting menu, tap Wi-Fi. 3) In the Wi-Fi network list, select the blue arrow next to the name of the printer you want to connect to. 4) On this page, you will need to take a couple of different steps. Slide the Auto-Join switch to the ON position. For the IP Address option, select Static. For the IP Address field, type in For the Subnet mask field, type in ) At this point, you have successfully set a static IP address. iphone/ipod + Zebra Printer Combination 6

8 Troubleshooting: Resetting Network Settings and the Printer when it will not appear in the Wi-Fi list Occasionally the ipod and the printer won t see each other and you will need to reset your network settings in order to get the printer to show up in the list. 1) Take the battery out of the printer and set it aside. 2) Tap the Settings icon located on the home screen or app tray. 3) From the Settings menu, tap the General option. From the options that pop up select Reset. 4) Select Reset Network Settings. A menu should popup asking you to confirm. Press Reset on the popup. 5) After the reboot insert the battery back into the printer and turn it on.
