4 The AVT-1000 Family The Polytec Family The AVT-1000 Family shares a common platform and leaves you the flexibility to tailor a system for your specific application and requirements of your production or laboratory needs. AVT-1000-S: The S version of the AVT allows the system to be operated on a tabletop or underneath a clean hood. AVT-1000-IS: With no extra space required for the spin stand, its small footprint and ability to be integrated with our optional automation system, the AVT IS is the recommended solution for use in production. AVT-1000-FA: The Failure Analysis version is equipped with a microscope for viewing defects and allows marking of nano-defects for further analysis. The AVT can measure Roughness (Ra) over the full surface with results comparable to an AFM, but in a fraction of the time. You can achieve repeatable nano and micro waviness measurements when measuring the same target on different machines and the capability to not only find defects, but to classify nano-pits and nano-asperities across the full surface.

5 Defects & Nano-Defects Photo: Pratt & Whitney Greg Roberts The Polytec Advantage: Pits & Asperities: With ever decreasing acceptable defect size, techniques that require clouds of defects and cannot distinguish pits from asperities fail to fulfill the measurement needs. Considering single defects can be as disastrous as a group of defects, the AVT-1000 was designed to be able to measure individual pit depth and asperity height. Fast full Surface Detection: Extremely fast defect detection and classification over the full surface. Defects are classified in either height or depth based on your specific parameters with an easy to read defect map. Defects can be marked for post analysis on an AFM. Direct Measurement Technique: Unlike scatter based solutions the AVT-1000 doesn t require a comparison standard. All data can be completely correlated with AFM data and can be used as realtime feedback to improve upstream manufacturing. Smaller drives with higher capacities require the development of head assemblies with constantly decreasing fly heights. To achieve these ultra low heights, the surface of the media must be extremely smooth. Finding aberrations which have become smaller and smaller every year is becoming increasingly critical. The Polytec AVT-1000 detects defects with widths of sub-microns and sub-nm heights allowing drives to be built for maximum capacity.

6 Roughness Measurements (Ra) The Polytec Advantage: Efficient fast full surface measurement: The Polytec AVT Tester measures roughness over a full surface. This quickly gives you a better understanding of your process as opposed to time consuming small area measurements. Non-destructive & noncontact: No replacement of expensive probe tips and no data distortion due to wear on the probe. Correlates to an AFM: The AVT-1000 can be calibrated and correlated with legacy data and is easy to integrate into cur rent testing plans. Technique follows roughness standards: ASME Y14.36M-1996 and ISO 1302:2002 standard calculated Roughness values. Hard disk drives are manufactured with nanometer precision.
