Beside normal export and import functionality, this enables also a model file synchronization to keep the Revit model and the fully detailed structural steel model up to date. 2 Your AU Experts Jochen Tanger is based in Munich, Germany, and has been working as a technical sales specialist at Autodesk, Inc., for almost 13 years. Since Autodesk decided to market Revit software in Central Europe in 2004, he has been presenting, selling, training for, and providing support for it to resellers and customers. Today he is mainly responsible for the whole Building Information Modeling (BIM) process with all of its products and solutions. Jochen holds a diplom-ingenieur degree in civil engineering from the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Stephanie Hoerndler is a Technical Specialist for Advance Steel software at Autodesk, Inc. Previously she worked in a construction office as a steel detailer, then she worked at Graitec GmbH as Application Engineer for Advance Steel. Stephanie attended the university HTWK Leipzig, Germany, and she is a building engineer. Stephanie is based in Munich, Germany. Udo Haedicke is the Product Manager for Advance Steel software at Autodesk, Inc. He owns a diploma as structural engineer from German university HTWK Leipzig. After 9 years working as engineer in a design office he started at GRAITEC as Application engineer for Advance Steel. Over the years Udo was promoted to Local Product Manager for the German speaking market and the Head of Technical Team at GRAITEC Germany. 2 years ago he moved to Autodesk together with Advance Steel technology acquisition. 2
3 Extension Installation Check system requirements for the extension, download it from Autodesk Exchange Apps, and run the installer. The extension installation requires a 64-bit version of Windows. The Advance Steel 2016 Revit Extension is only compliant with Revit 2016, Revit Architecture 2016 and Revit Structure 2016 The Advance Steel Revit Extension installation routine uses the Autodesk Setup installer. Install Download the Advance Steel 2016 Revit Extension installer from Autodesk Exchange Apps and run the.msi to install it. After the installation is complete, you may need to restart the Autodesk product to activate the extension. When successfully installed, the Advance Steel 2016 Revit Extension panel is displayed on the Add-Ins tab in the ribbon. To uninstall the Advance Steel 2016 Revit Extension, close the Autodesk product if you are running it: 1. Download the installer from Autodesk Exchange Apps, simply rerun it and click the Uninstall button. Or 2. Uninstall it from 'Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features' (Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1) or Add/Remove Programs, just as you would uninstall any other application from your system. 0EA2AC3C84D7 3
4 Extension What s New in 2016? Extension is able to import plates back to Advance Steel: Advance Steel plates are transferred to Revit into plate families. In previous versions these plates were imported back to Advance Steel as special parts. Starting with Advance Steel extension for Revit 2016 the plates are imported back in Advance Steel as plate objects. See Plates. Extension is able to synchronize plates in Revit: The Import only structural elements option, from the Settings menu, is overwritten when plates are imported through the Synchronization dialog. This means that plates are imported in the Revit project when they are applied from the Synchronization dialog even if the Import only structural elements option is checked. See Synchronize plates in Revit. Extension uses a new mapping system: Advance Steel 2016 Revit Extension uses a new mapping system. This new mechanism uses a 1 to 1 mapping between the Revit family and the Advance Steel table, as well as between the Revit profile Type and the Advance Steel SectionName. See Revit family based section mapping. Revit materials are mapped in Advance Steel: Common structural materials from the Revit Metal and Concrete categories have been mapped. These materials can be found in the AEC Material library in Revit. See Material mapping. Inverted start and end points in Advance Steel - Revit export / import: In previous versions the plugin would invert the start and end points of beams when a model was transferred between Advance Steel and Revit. In order to be consistent with Revit, the code was rewritten and now the start and end points are no longer inverted when transferring beams through SMLX. See Advance Steel - Revit file transfer. Beam and Column rotations are spotted and applied by the Synchronization dialog in Revit: See Advance Steel - Revit Synchronization. Improved slanted column transfer: In the previous version there was an issue that caused slanted columns from Advance Steel to be transferred to Revit and then back in Advance Steel with their sections mirrored and the start and endpoint positions presented slight differences. This issue was solved when the transfer of the position and rotation improvements were made. See Advance Steel - Revit file transfer. The Synchronization dialog displays both Position and Offset changes in a single modification line: You are prompted with the coordinate points of the start and end points of the system axis. This applies to all linear elements, including curved beams. See Position and Offset display in Synchronisation dialog. Main tick boxes work with applied filters: In the Synchronization dialog the Main tick boxes work with applied filters. If objects are selected using the filters and a main tick box is activated, only those lines will have the individual tick box selected. See Main tick boxes with applied filters. F1 Help button for extension: If you keep the mouse cursor over Advance Steel Extension ribbon (Add-Ins tab) and then press the F1 key, a web page containing the extension's help will open. This page is located along with all the other plug-ins help documentation, within the Revit Help. 4
5 Replaced GTC file extension with SMLX file extension: The GTC /GTCX file extensions were replaced with the SMLX (Steel Markup Language) file extension. The Export and Import dialogs in Revit contain only the new file format. 2D038F
6 Extension Settings and export Specify options to import and export elements between Advance Steel and Revit. You can access the Settings dialog in the Add-Ins tab > Advance Steel Extension panel in the ribbon and find the following options: - Path configuration for Revit library - Steel section definitions Update section mappings on import - Allows manual mapping definitions to be saved in the database. No function in 2016 any longer! Import plates - Allows the import of Plate objects in Revit. Disable join for beams - Disables the automatic Revit joint for steel beams during import. Export beam shortenings - Exports shortenings to Advance Steel for beams joined automatically by Revit. Import only structural elements and Export only structural elements - Turns the import/export of only structural elements (beams, columns etc.) on or off. C54E
7 Extra Tip: The Country Library option has no influence in the export file any longer as the mapping is being done automatically with the existing presettings and databases. 7
8 Extension Section & Material Mapping Section mapping is important while transferring via SMLX because it resolves the differently named sections between software. The mapping database is GTCMapping2016.mdb and it can be found in C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance\Data. The database is installed in a Program Data folder and can be accessed and edited with any database editor and the Management Tools Table editor. Mapping can exist as: 1 to 1 mapping, where each section size is mapped individually. Rule based mapping, where a certain rule (using tokens) will allow the mapping of an entire class in one definition line. Family based section mapping: 1 to 1 mapping Advance Steel 2016 Revit Extension uses a new mapping system. This new mechanism uses a 1 to 1 mapping between the Revit family and the Advance Steel table, as well as between the Revit profile Type and the Advance Steel SectionName. The 2016 version of the Advance Steel Extension contains the automatic mapping for the most used sections form the US and UK and Australian Revit libraries. Revit 2016 contains newly created families, according to the latest standards, for the following countries: US Imperial (AISC 14.1) US Metric (AISC 14.1) Canada (CISC Shapes) UK (British Standard) The name inside the brackets represents the name of the folder where the new families are stored in each country folder. The families can be found in the Structural Framing and Structural Columns folders from each of the mentioned countries. These families contain 2 newly created parameters: Family Name Key Section Name Key The Family Name key parameter is mapped 1 to 1 to the Table Name from Advance Steel. This parameter is stored in the family. 8
9 There is also a new table inside AstorProfiles2016.mdb called RevitASProfileConversion. This table stores the mapping between the Revit Family Name Key and Advance Steel Profile Table. The Section Name key parameter is mapped 1 to 1 to the SectionName value of a profile in Advance Steel. This parameter is stored in the family. 9
10 The extension extracts (FamilyNameKey, RFAFilePath, RFAFileDate) from all Revit families from a given path and then builds a.xml file, which is used later at import. The index file is created first time you start the extension. When you add a new path, all families from the path are indexed. A progress bar appears to notify you. When you remove a path, the index is updated. Note: The new mapping mechanism imports profiles without using the Profile_Rotation table from the GTCMapping.mdb database. The old mechanism that uses the 3 tables (GTC_Profile_Conversion, Profile_Exports_Conversion, Profile_Rotation) from GTCMapping2016.mdb is still present and is used as a secondary option, when the new mechanism is not able to map a profile. Material mapping Revit is delivered with specific materials which are automatically mapped with the Advance Steel materials. The materials which are automatically mapped can be found in the AEC Materials library in Revit. In Advance Steel the table that contains the material mapping lines is called GTC_Material_Conversion and is stored in GTCMapping2016.mdb 10
11 Manual Mapping In case the mapping is not done automatically due to missing entries in the database, a dialog box pops up asking for manual mapping. Once this mapping is done, it is automatically saved in the database and will be applied automatically next time the same section (or material) is transferred between Revit and Advance Steel. Here is the dialog box which appear in Revit when a section which exists in Advance Steel is not loaded in Revit: Press the Load Family button to load the required family and then assign the right section. Here is how the dialog box looks like in Advance Steel when you manually map a section which comes from Revit but is not automatically recognized when importing the SMLX file in Advance Steel: 11
12 Those information is stored in Profile_Exports_Conversion from GTCMapping2016.mdb Application shows application in which the model is imported (e.g. Import SMLX in Advance Steel) GTC Standard shows the name of the standard in SMLX file (e.g. name of Revit Family) GTC Section shows section name in SMLX file (e.g. name of Revit profile type) Standard is mapped to specific Standard in in imported application. (e.g. name of Advance Steel Standard) Section is mapped to specific Section in in imported application (e.g. name of Advance Steel Section Name) Compare with manual mapping from AS to Revit (import in Revit) 12
13 User Material Mapping In case there is a new material created in Revit it can t be converted automatically in Advance Steel. The material needs to be created in Advance Steel as well to be mapped: That can be done with Management Tools or directly in Database. When mapped to a wrong entry due to missing material information, that wrong record is written in GTC_Material_Conversation in GTCMapping2016.mdb and needs to be deleted again. After the lines are deleted, Revit and Advance Steel platforms must be reopened because this databases are opened only one time, when the application is first opened. 13
14 In case there is a new material created in Advance Steel it will be converted automatically in Revit. Material properties needs to be verified. 14
15 User Section Mapping In case there is a new Section Family created in Revit it can be imported as a user profile in Advance Steel. The newly created user profile is written in AstorProfiles.mdb In case there is a new Section created in Advance Steel a corresponding family needs to be created in Revit before synchronizing. 15
16 Best Practice Revit Model Shortenings What are the differences between exporting the beam shortenings not exporting them? Export shortenings: Revit Advance Steel
17 Conclusion: Revit exports shortenings that are recognized and used in Advance Steel, but will lead to problems for a lot of steel connections as they use their own shortenings that will overlap with the existing ones from Revit. Export NO shortenings: 17

20 Best Practice Plates (within joints) & Holes Plates Advance Steel plates are imported in Revit as plate families. In order to import plates in Revit, you need to perform the following in the Settings menu: Check the Import plates option. Uncheck the Import only structural elements (e.g. beams, columns, bracings,...) option. These plates are imported back in Advance Steel as plate objects. The images below display a model in Advance Steel that contains a rectangular, polygonal and circular plate. The model was transferred to Revit and then was sent back to Advance Steel through.smlx. The plates are imported in Advance Steel as plate objects. Note: Circular holes on plates are transferred between the 2 applications. Advance Steel Model Revit Model 20
21 Advance Steel Model (imported through.smlx) Synchronize plates in Revit The following plate modifications can be synchronized in Revit: Position Shape Thickness Material In order to display the above mentioned capabilities, a model from Revit was exported and then imported in Advance Steel. Here several connections were modeled between the structural elements. After this step, the model was exported again, this time from Advance Steel, and the plate objects were synchronized in the initial Revit model. 22 Position In the following example the corner base plate was rotated by 90 degrees in the Advance Steel model. When this modification is synchronized back in the Revit model the difference is spotted as a "Position" change. The Synchronization dialog compares the coordinates of each point that defines the plate and displays them at the interface as: "-0.85, ,-1.36 à -0.85,-97.96,-1.36 à 0.07, ,-1.36 à ". If the change is applied, the corner base plate is rotated to the new position. When this modification is synchronized back in the Revit model the difference is spotted also as a Position change. When this modification is synchronized back in the Revit model, the difference is spotted as a Thickness change. If the modification is applied, the plate thickness is changed according to the new value. 22

This modification was then synchronized in the Revit project. The difference is spotted as a Material change. If the modification is applied, the plate material is changed according to the new value. 24 Best Practice Special Parts (Stairs, Railing, Truss, ) Learn what can be transferred (and probably what can't) You can transfer numerous elements from/to Revit to/from Advance Steel, such as Levels, Steel beams, Plates, Wood, Concrete elements, Grating, some Connection elements, some Beam features and some Plate features. All element transfers are dependent on the feature extent and limitations of each application (Revit and Advance Steel).
