Learning Objectives Become familiar with the Structural Connection Component within Revit Learn how to get to a high level of detail before sending models to Advance Steel Discover the ability to better coordinate Fabrication Models with Design Models Enable the workflow to increase design accuracy for site assembly Description Design revisions can be described as a washing machine; the model will spin around until designs are finalized. Leveraging the bi-directional link with Revit helps to enable a more coordinated process. This class will dive deep into the new Structural Connections for Revit to enable designers to reach a high level of detail. Additionally, we will take a look at the Advance Steel Extension for Revit and how only the change of the model can be applied to each software for better coordinated BIM Models Your AU Expert(s) Stephen Bessette is a Technical Sales Specialist for Autodesk, Inc., providing technical support for Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk AutoCAD Verticals, Autodesk Revit, and Autodesk Advance Steel software. 2 Revit Structure Build Structural Addition 1. Open 01 Revit Structure.RVT 2. Navigate to Level 2 3. At the intersection of Column 3 & B, place a W 14x43 column Structure Ribbon > Structure Panel > Column Page 2

3 4. Structure Ribbon > Structure Panel > Select Beam 5. Draw the beam from the midpoint of the column placed in Step 3 to the midpoint of the existing column at Grid 3 C and repeat to grid 4 B Page 3

4 6. Change the beam size to W 8x10 in the Properties pull down menu 7. Structure Ribbon > Structure Panel > Select Beam System 8. Set the Layout Rule to Hover the mouse over the beam from Grid C to B to see the layout of the W 8x10 beam system 10. Click on the beam Create Structural Connections 11. Structure Ribbon > Connection Panel > select the down arrow to open the Structural Connections Settings dialog box Page 4

5 NOTE: This model has existing steel connections. Typically, a fresh model will show all of the connections within the Available Connections menu 12. Click OK to close the dialog box 13. Zoom into Grid 3 C 14. Using Ctrl + Click to select the column and beam Page 5

6 15. Structure Ribbon > Connection Panel > Select Connection 16. Change the Connection type to Clip Angle 17. Select the Clip Angle Connection 18. Modify Structural Connections Contextual Ribbon > Modify Panel > Select Modify Parameters Page 6

7 19. In the Clip Angle Dialog box > Clip Angle Menu > change the Angle profile size to L 3 1/2x 3 1/2x3/8 20. Close the Dialog box 21. Modify Structural Connections Contextual Ribbon > Modify Panel > Select Mirror - Draw Axis 22. Select the midpoint of the beam (from C -B along grid 3) and draw the axis line. 8 23. Using Ctrl + Click select the leftmost W 8x10 beam and the crossing W 12x26 beam 24. Structure Ribbon > Connection Tab > Select Connection 25. In the Properties dialog box, select Shear Plate 26. Window (bottom left to upper right) select the connection 27. Modify Structural Connections Contextual Ribbon > Modify Panel > Select Array 28. Uncheck the box for Group and Associate 29. Set the Number to Select within the model, drag the cursor to the right and type 5 and press Enter Page 8

9 31. Window (bottom left to upper right) select the arrayed connections 32. Modify Structural Connections Contextual Ribbon > Modify > Select Mirror Draw Axis 33. Select the midpoint of any beam and end point of drawn axis line 34. Using Ctrl + Click, select the Column at grid 3 B and the beam along grid B 35. Structure Ribbon > Connection Panel > Select Connection 36. In the Properties Palette, change the connection to Clip Angle 37. Select the Beam on grid line B and on grid line Structure Ribbon > Connection Panel > Select Connection 39. In the Properties Palette, verify the connection is a Shear Plate 40. Change to the {3D} view 41. Select the column holding up the floor frame Page 9

10 42. Structure Ribbon > Connection Panel > Select Connection 43. In the Properties Palette, change the connection to Baseplate 44. Save the model Export Model 45. Add-Ins Ribbon > Advance Steel Extension Panel > Drop Down Menu > Select Settings 46. Uncheck the box for Export beam shortenings and check the box for Export grids 47. Click OK to close the dialog box Page 10

In the Export utilities dialog box, click OK and save the.smlx file Advance Steel Modify Model in Advance Steel 50. Open Advance Steel Export & Import Ribbon > Revit Panel > Select Import 52. Select the 02 Revit Export.SMLX file and click Open 53. Home Ribbon > Project Panel > Select Project Explorer 54. In the Project Explorer dialog box, select Level 2 to isolate the objects Page 11

12 55. Select the W8x10 beams 56. Right-Click and select Advance Properties 57. In the Dialog box, change the size to W 8x21 and close the dialog box Page 12

14 62. Home Ribbon > Objects Panel > Select Split Beam 63. Select the Beam along grid line 4 from C to A and press Enter 64. Select the mid-point of the vertical column and press Enter 65. Repeat steps for the beam along grid line 1 from C to A 66. Connection Vault Tool Palette > Platform Beams > Select Clip Angle 67. Select the column at grid intersection B 4 and press Enter 68. 15 69. Advance Tool Palette > Tools > Create Joint in Joint Group, Multiple 70. Select any portion of the connection at grid C 4 and press Enter Page 15

16 71. Select both columns created in step 61 and press Enter 72. Select all intersecting beams along grids 1 and 4 and press Enter 73. Home Ribbon > Objects > Select Rolled I section 74. Draw missing beam along grid C from 1 to Type MATCHPROP in the command line and press Enter 76. Select the beam along grid C from 2 to Select the beam created in step 74 and press Enter 78. Using Ctrl + Click, select columns created in Advance Steel 89. In the Properties Dialog box, change: Top Offset to 10 Column Style to Vertical 90. Add-Ins Ribbon > Advance Steel Extension Panel > Drop Down Menu > Select Export 91. In the Export utilities dialog box, click OK and save the.smlx file Synchronize Changes in Advance Steel 92. In Advance Steel 2017, open 06 Advance Steel Model.dwg 93. Export & Import Ribbon > Revit Panel > Select Synchronize Page 18

19 94. In the Synchronization dialog box, load 05 Revit Structure.smlx 95. Check the box next to Status and select Apply All Actions Detail the Model in Advance Steel 1. Open Advance Steel Open 07 Advance Steel Model.dwg 3. In the Advance Tool Palette, select Tools > Camera at Node 4. Select the bounding box of the clip angle connection at grid intersection 1 B Page 19

20 5. Select the Front plane and press Enter 6. Select the Camera, Right-Click and select Advance Properties 7. In the Detail Box, change the following: X-delta to 4 Y-delta to 3 Style to 2 Detail View Scale to 1 ½ = Save the model 9. Output Ribbon > Part Marks Panel > Select Numbering Page 20

21 10. Verify boxes next to Process Preliminary Mark, Process Single Parts, and Process Assemblies are checked and click OK 11. Close the Numbering Dialog box 12. In the Drawing Process Tool Palette, select Cameras > All Cameras PageFull ANSI-D 13. Click OK in the Process Properties dialog box 14. Output Ribbon > Document Manager Panel > Select Document Manager Page 21

22 15. In the Document Manager, expand Details > Up to Date to see the detail drawings created. 16. Double-click any detail to view 17. In 07 Advance Steel Model.dwg, select the column at grid intersection 1 B 18. Right-click and select Advance Properties 19. Change the size to W 16x Save the Model 21. Open the Document Manager 22. Expand Details > Update required and select Update required 23. Click Update Revision 24. In the Revision dialog box, enter a value for Author and Description and click OK Page 22
