R. Hederso [15], states that for a r-uiform r-partite hypergraph H, the iequality τ(h) (r 1) ν(h) always holds. This cojecture is widely ope, except i the case of r =, whe it is equivalet to Kőig s theorem [18], ad i the case of r = 3, which was proved by Aharoi i 001 [3]. Here we study some special cases of Ryser s cojecture. First of all, the most studied special case is whe H is itersectig. Eve for this special case, ot too much is kow: this cojecture is proved oly for r 5 i [10, 1]. For r > 5 it is also widely ope. Geeralizig the cojecture for itersectig hypergraphs, we cojecture the followig. If a r-uiform r-partite hypergraph H is t-itersectig (i.e., every two hyperedges meet i at least t < r vertices), the τ(h) r t. We prove this cojecture for the case t > r/4. 2 Gyárfás [10] showed that Ryser s cojecture for itersectig hypergraphs is equivalet to sayig that the vertices of a r-edge-colored complete graph ca be covered by r 1 moochromatic compoets. Motivated by this formulatio, we examie what fractio of the vertices ca be covered by r 1 moochromatic compoets of differet colors i a r-edgecolored complete graph. We prove a sharp boud for this problem. Fially we prove Ryser s cojecture for the very special case whe the maximum degree of the hypergraph is two. 1 Itroductio A hypergraph is a pair H = (V, E) where V is a fiite set (vertices), ad E is a multiset of subsets of V (hyperedges). A hypergraph is r-partite if its vertex set has a partitio to r oempty classes such that o hyperedge cotais two vertices from the same class. We refer to the partite classes simply as classes (ote that i some papers they are called sides). A set is called multi-colored if it itersects every class i at most oe vertex, i.e., i a r-partite hypergraph every hyperedge is multi-colored. A hypergraph is r- uiform if all of its hyperedges have cardiality r. A hypergraph is d-regular if every vertex is cotaied i exactly d hyperedges. A hypergraph is t-itersectig if every pair of hyperedges have at least t commo vertices. Throughout the paper we assume 0 < t < r whe speakig about t-itersectig r-uiform hypergraphs. A hypergraph is itersectig if it is 1-itersectig. Let us itroduce some more stadard otatios. For a hypergraph H with vertex set V = V (H) ad hyperedge set E = E(H) the vertex coverig umber is: τ(h) = mi{ T : T V, T f f E}, the edge coverig umber is: (H) = mi{ F : F E, F = V }, the matchig umber is: ν(h) = max{ F : F E, f 1 f = f 1 f F}, the maximum degree is: (H) = max{ F : F E, F }, the idepedece umber is: α(h) = max{ X : X V, f X f E}, the strog idepedece umber is: α (H) = max{ X : X V, f X 1 f E}. A famous cojecture of Ryser (which appeared i the PhD thesis of his studet, J.R. Hederso [15]) states that for a r-uiform r-partite hypergraph H, we have τ(h) (r 1) ν(h). This cojecture is widely ope, except i the special case of r =, whe it is equivalet to Kőig s theorem [18], ad whe r = 3, which was proved by Aharoi i 001 [3], usig topological results from [5]. We metio also some related results. Hederso [15] showed that the cojecture caot be improved if r 1 is a prime power. Haxell ad Scott [13] showed that the costat i the cojecture caot be smaller tha r 4 for all but fiitely may values of r. Füredi [9] proved that the
fractioal coverig umber is always at most (r 1) ν(h), ad Lovász [19] proved that the fractioal matchig umber is always at least τ(h). The hypergraphs r achievig τ(h) = (r 1) ν(h) have also bee ivestigated, but this problem is also widely ope. Haxell, Naris ad Szabó characterized the sharp examples for r = 3 [11, 1]. For larger values of r, trucated projective plaes give a ifiite family of sharp examles. Apart from these, there are some sporadic examples [4,, 8, 0], moreover, Abu-Khazeh, Barát, Pokrovskiy ad Szabó [1] costructed aother ifiite family of extremal hypergraphs but projective plaes play also a importat role i their costructio. Here we study some special cases of Ryser s cojecture. First of all, the most studied special case is whe ν = 1, i.e., whe H is itersectig. Eve for this case, ot too much is kow. Gyárfás [10] showed that this special case of the cojecture is equivalet to sayig that the vertices of a r-edge-colored complete graph ca be covered by r 1 moochromatic compoets (see below). He also proved this cojecture for r 4 [10], ad later Tuza [1] proved it for r = 5. For r > 5 this cojecture is also widely ope. Some recet papers study this special case, e.g., see [6, 13, 8, 0]. For itersectig hypergraphs, we geeralize Ryser s cojecture by cojecturig the followig. If a r- uiform r-partite hypergraph H is t-itersectig, the τ(h) r t. We prove this cojecture for the case r > t > r/4. This questio was also studied (idepedetly) by Bustamate ad Stei, see [7]. The costructio of Gyárfás [10] (see also i [16]) is the followig. We associate a multi edge-colored graph to a r-partite r-uiform hypergraph. Defiitio 1. For a r-partite r-uiform hypergraph H, let G = G(H) be the followig multi edge-colored graph: The vertex set of G is V (G) = E(H). Two vertices u, v V (G) are coected by a edge if the correspodig hyperedges E u, E v E(H) have a oempty itersectio. The edge uv is colored by the colors {i : E u ad E v share a vertex from the i th class}. We deote the set of colors of edge uv by Col(uv). If i Col(uv), the we say that the edge uv has the color i. Note that if H is itersectig, the G is a complete graph. Remark. The origial costructio of Gyárfás colored each edge uv by oly oe color, chose arbitrarily from Col(uv). Remark 3. The color sets we defied i this way are trasitive: if i Col(uv) Col(vw), the i Col(uw). We call a complete graph G multi r-edge-colored if for each distict vertex pair {u, v} we have Col(uv) [r] = {1,..., r} ad if the colorig is trasitive. I a multi r-edge-colored graph, a moochromatic compoet of color i is a compoet of the subgraph formed by the edges usig the color i. Note that as the colorig is trasitive if U is the vertex set of a moochromatic compoet of color i, the for every u v U we have i Col(uv); i other words, the edges of G havig color i form a partitio of V (G) ito i-colored cliques. Each vertex of H i the class i correspods to oe maximal clique of color i, which is also a moochromatic (i-colored) 3
coected compoet of G. A set of vertices T V (H) covers the hyperedges of H (as i the defiitio of τ) if ad oly if the moochromatic compoets correspodig to its elemets cover V (G). Remark 4. We also ote that for ay edge-colored complete graph we ca cosider the color-trasitive closure: for ay edge uv we defie Col(uv) = {i u ad v are i the same moochromatic compoet of color i}. The vertex sets of the moochromatic compoets of this multi edge-colored graph are the same as the vertex sets of the moochromatic compoets of the origial edge-colored graph. Ryser s cojecture for itersectig hypergraphs is equivalet to the statemet that r 1 moochromatic compoets ca cover V (G(H)). The more geeral cojecture for t-itersectig hypergraphs is equivalet to the statemet that for every multi r-edgecolored complete graph, where each edge has at least t colors, there is a set of r t moochromatic compoets that cover the vertices (if t < r). For the case of r-edge-colored complete graphs, we also study the followig problem: What fractio of the vertices ca be covered by r 1 moochromatic compoets of differet colors? We prove a sharp boud for this problem, amely ( 1 ) V r (r 1) (G). I the hypergraph laguage, this correspods to the questio of How may hyperedges ca be covered by a multi-colored set of size r 1 i a itersectig r-partite r-uiform hypergraph? We show that the hypergraphs givig the miimum are exactly the hypergraphs that ca be obtaied from a trucated projective plae by replacig each hyperedge by b parallel copies for some iteger b. Fially we prove Ryser s cojecture for the very special case whe the maximum degree of the hypergraph is two, i.e., whe o vertex is cotaied i three or more hyperedges. The prelimiary versio of this paper ca be foud i [17]. The t-itersectig case Cojecture 5. Let H be a r-uiform r-partite t-itersectig hypergraph with 1 t r 1. The τ(h) r t. Theorem 6. If H is a r-uiform r-partite t-itersectig hypergraph ad r 4 < t r 1, the τ(h) r t. Usig Gyárfás costructio (Defiitio 1), Theorem 6 follows from the followig statemet: Theorem 7. Let G be a multi r-edge-colored complete graph where each edge has at least t differet colors. If r 1 t > r, the V (G) ca be covered by at most r t 4 moochromatic compoets. Remark 8. Cojecture 5 is seemigly a stregtheig of Ryser s cojecture for itersectig hypergraphs (which correspods to t = 1). However, the statemet is stroger for smaller t values. 4
To see this, suppose the cojecture is proved for a fixed t ad for every r > t. To prove it for t + 1, suppose we are give a multi r-edge-colored complete graph where each edge has at least t + 1 differet colors ad r > t + 1. Deletig color r from every Col(uv), we get a multi (r 1)-edge-colored complete graph where each edge has at least t differet colors, so by the assumptio its vertex set ca be covered by r 1 t = r (t + 1) moochromatic compoets. Remark 9. I a recet mauscript [7], Bustamate ad Stei formulated idepedetly the same cojecture (we are thakful for the reviewer who raised our attetio to it). They proved that the cojecture is true if r 1 t r. We ote that our theorem is stroger (except that their result cotais the well-kow case r = 4, t = 1 while our result does ot). Proof of Theorem 7. We assume [r] = {1,,..., r} is the set of colors, ad if x is a vertex ad I [r] is a set of colors, the we deote by C(x, I) the set of moochromatic compoets cotaiig x ad havig a color i I. The proof goes by iductio o the umber vertices. If V (G), we ca cover V (G) by 1 moochromatic compoet. If there are x y V (G) where Col(xy) = r, the cotract the edge xy to a vertex x (by color-trasitivity, for ay vertex z x, y we have Col(zx) = Col(zy), so we defie Col(zx ) = Col(zx)). By iductio, the graph obtaied ca be covered by at most r t moochromatic compoets. It is easy to see that the preimages of these compoets are moochromatic ad cover V (G). So from this poit we may (ad will) suppose that Col(xy) < r for every pair x y. First we prove some special cases. Lemma 10. Let G be a multi r-edge-colored complete graph, where each edge has exactly t differet colors. If t + 1 r 4t, the V (G) ca be covered by at most r t moochromatic compoets. Proof. Take ay edge xy. Without loss of geerality, we ca suppose that Col(xy) = I = [t]. First cosider the case r t. Let J = [r t]. Now J I sice r t t. We claim that C(x, J) = C(y, J) covers V (G). If a vertex z is ot covered, the Col(xz) = Col(yz) = {r t+1,..., r}. However, sice each moochromatic compoet is a clique, we get {r t + 1,..., r} Col(xy) = I, so t = r cotradictig the assumptio t < r. Thus it remais to prove the case r > t. Let j = r t ad J = {t + 1,..., t + j} if j > 0, ad J = otherwise. Take C(x, I) C(x, J) C(y, J). We claim that these t + j r t moochromatic compoets cover the vertices of G. If a vertex z is ot covered, the Col(xz) {t + j + 1,..., r} ad Col(yz) {t + j + 1,..., r} ad, as the colorig is trasitive, Col(xz) Col(yz) I, thus Col(xz) Col(yz) =. However, Col(xz) = Col(yz) = t, so t r t j, i.e., t r or equivaletly r 4t 1, a cotradictio. Lemma 11. Let G be a multi r-edge-colored complete graph where each edge has at least t differet colors. If t + 1 r 4t 1 ad there is a edge xy with t < Col(xy) < r, the V (G) ca be covered by at most r t moochromatic compoets. 5
Proof. Take a edge xy with Col(xy) > t. Without loss of geerality, we ca suppose that Col(xy) = I = [l] where t < l < r. First cosider the case r t + l. Let J = [r t]. Now J I. We claim that C(x, J) = C(y, J) covers V (G). If a vertex z is ot covered, the Col(xz) = Col(yz) = {r t+1,..., r}. However, sice the colorig is trasitive, we get {r t+1,..., r} I, so l = I = r cotradictig the assumptio l < r. Thus it remais to prove the case r > t+l. Let j = r t l ad J = {l+1,..., l+j} if j > 0, ad J = otherwise. Take C(x, I) C(x, J) C(y, J). We claim that these l + j r t moochromatic compoets cover the vertices of G. If a vertex z is ot covered, the Col(xz) {l + j + 1,..., r} ad Col(yz) {l + j + 1,..., r} ad, as each moochromatic compoet is a clique, Col(xz) Col(yz) =. However, Col(xz) t ad Col(yz) t, so t r l j, i.e., t r t l or equivaletly r 3t + l 1 4t, a cotradictio. It remais to prove the case r = 4t 1 ad Col(xy) = t for each x y. Let k be the largest iteger j such that there is a triagle i G with j colors occurrig o all three edges. Let xyz be a triagle with k commo colors o its edges. Let us itroduce some further otatios. Let K = Col(xy) Col(yz) Col(zx) ad X = Col(yz) K ad Y = Col(xz) K ad Z = Col(xy) K, fially let S = [r] (K X Y Z). For a set A, A always deotes a subset of A. Moreover, we deote A A by A. Note that K = k ad X = Y = Z = t k. Case 0: k = 0. Now V (G) r + 1 as o two icidet edges may have the same color. Let V (G) = {u 1,..., u }, where r + 1, ad let c i Col(u i 1 u i ) for 1 i /. If is eve, the cosider C(u 1, c 1 ) C(u 3, c )... C(u 1, c / ), otherwise cosider C(u 1, c 1 ) C(u 3, c )... C(u, c ( 1)/ ) C(u, c), where c is a arbitrary color of a edge icidet to u. These (at most ( + 1)/ (r + )/ ) moochromatic compoets obviously cover V (G), ad (r + )/ r t as r = 4t 1. Case 1: 0 < 3k t. Choose Y Y ad Z Z so that Y + Z = t + k 1. This is possible, sice Y + Z = t k t + k because t 3k. Take the followig moochromatic compoets: C(x, K Y Z) C(y, Y ) C(z, Z ). The umber of compoets chose is at most (t k) + (t + k 1) = 3t 1 = r t. Claim 1. The compoets C(x, K Y Z) C(y, Y ) C(z, Z ) cover each vertex. Proof. Suppose that a vertex w is ot covered. The ( Col(xw) Col(yw) Col(zw) ) K =. Similarly, Col(xw) Y = ad Col(yw) Y =. We claim that also Col(zw) Y =. Ideed, as Y Col(xz), if zw had a color from Y, the xw would also have that color (sice the colorig is trasitive), a cotradictio. By the same reasoig, Col(xw) Z =, Col(yw) Z = ad Col(zw) Z =. 6
As a cosequece, Col(xw) X S, Col(yw) X Y S ad Col(zw) X Z S. Next we claim that the colors i X ca occur altogether (coutig with multiplicity) at most t times o the edges xw, yw ad zw. Let c X be a color. If it occurs more tha oce o edges xw, yw ad zw, the it is i Col(yw) Col(zw) but c Col(xw). To see this, ote that if c Col(xw) Col(yw), the c Col(xy) cotradictig X Col(xy) = ; similarly c Col(xw) Col(zw). By the choice of k, Col(yw) Col(zw) k. Hece the colors i X occur at most X + k t times o the edges xw, yw ad zw. Each color i S ca oly occur oce o xw, yw ad zw, sice by color-trasitivity, a color occurrig o at least two of the edges xw, yw ad zw would also occur o oe of the edges xy, yz ad zx, ad that would cotradict the defiitio of S. Hece coutig the colors of the edges xw, yw ad zw: 3t S + Z + Y + t = S + ( Y + Z ( Y + Z )) + t = (4t 1 (3t k)) + (t k (t + k 1)) + t = (t + k 1) + (t 3k + 1) + t = 3t k, which is a cotradictio. Case : 3k > t. If X + Y + Z = 3t 3k k 1, the choose X X, Y Y ad Z Z so that X + Y + Z = k 1. If X + Y + Z = 3t 3k < k 1, the let X = X, Y = Y ad Z = Z. Take the followig moochromatic compoets: C(x, K X Y Z) C(y, Y ) C(z, X Z ). The umber of compoets chose is at most K + X + Y + Z + X + Y + Z k + 3(t k) + k 1 = 3t 1 = r t. We claim that the compoets chose cover each vertex. Suppose that there is a vertex w which is ot covered. Similarly to the previous case, it is easy to prove that the colors of xw, yw ad zw are all from S X Y Z, ad each color is used at most oce altogether o these three edges. Hece 3t S + X + Y + Z. If 3t 3k k 1, the 3t S + X + Y + Z = 4t 1 ( K + X + Y + Z ) = 4t 1 (k + k 1) = 4t 3k < 3t sice t < 3k. This is a cotradictio. If 3t 3k < k 1, the 3t S X Y Z = S = 4t 1 (3t k) = t+k 1. But this implies t k 1, hece k > t, which cotradicts the assumptio that each edge has exactly t colors. This fiishes the proof of Theorem 7. Remark 13. We thik that with a more diversified case aalysis, Theorem 7 ca be exteded to the case t r/5. Note however, that the case t = r/6 would iclude the first usolved case of Ryser s cojecture for itersectig hypergraphs. 3 Coverig large fractio by few moochromatic compoets I this sectio, we give a sharp boud for the ratio of vertices that ca be covered by r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors i a r-edge colored complete graph. By Remark 4, we ca assume that the moochromatic compoets of 7
the graph are cliques, sice i the color-trasitive closure of a graph, the moochromatic compoets have the same vertex sets as i the origial graph. Theorem 14. Let G be a multi r-edge-colored complete graph o vertices. The at least ( ) 1 r (r 1) vertices of G ca be covered by r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors, ad this boud is sharp for ifiitely may values of r. Moreover, the r 1 moochromatic compoets ca be chose so that their itersectio is oempty. Applyig the costructio of Gyárfás (Defiitio 1), we get the followig equivalet statemet for hypergraphs. Theorem 15. Let H be a r-partite r-uiform itersectig hypergraph. The at least ( 1 r (r 1) ) E(H) hyperedges of H ca be covered by a multi-colored set of size r 1, ad this boud is sharp for ifiitely may values of r. Moreover, the cover ca be chose so that it is a subset of some hyperedge of H. The followig stregtheig of Ryser s cojecture was phrased by Aharoi et al. [4, Cojecture 3.1]: I a itersectig r-partite r-uiform hypergraph H, there exists a class of size r 1 or less, or a cover of the form e {x} for some e E ad x e. This cojecture was disproved i [8]. Note however, that by Theorem 15, if we require the cover to be multi-colored, the additioally requirig it to be a subset of a hyperedge does ot decrease the umber of coverable hyperedges i the worst case. We call the reader s attetio to the fact that, although our result is sharp for ifiitely may values of r, i all our examples showig sharpess every class has exactly r 1 vertices, thus they are far from exhibitig a couterexample to Ryser s cojecture. Proof of Theorem 14. We call a edge-colorig of G spaig if for every color c ad vertex u there is a edge uv of G such that c Col(uv). If the edge-colorig of G is ot spaig, the we ca cover all the vertices of G by r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors. Ideed, if there is a vertex v ad a color i such that o edge icidet to v has color i, the C(v, [r] {i}) covers the vertices of G. Now suppose that the colorig of G is spaig. For r = we ca cover the vertex set by oe moochromatic compoet by a well-kow folklore observatio, so we may assume r 3. Let the umber of moochromatic compoets of color i be k i. Let us deote the set of moochromatic compoets of color i by C i. We may suppose that k 1 k... k r, otherwise (if k r = 1) we are doe. I the followig proof, we will thik of moochromatic compoets as vertex sets, hece whe we write C C i, we mea that C is the vertex set of a moochromatic compoet of color i. Case 1: k 1 r 1. We have C C 1, C C r C C = (k r 1), (1) sice each vertex occurs i exactly oe compoet of color r ad oe compoet of color 1. Hece each vertex is couted k r 1 times for the k r 1 compoets of color r that does ot cotai it. 8
From (1) it follows that amog the k 1 k r sets {C C : C C 1, C C r }, there is oe which has size at most kr 1 k 1 k r. Let C 1 C r be such a set with miimum cardiality. As k 1 k r we have kr 1 k r k 1 1 k 1, so kr 1 k 1 k r k 1 1. Usig r 1 k k1 1 we also have k 1 1 r, so kr 1 k1 (r 1) k 1 k r r. (r 1) We claim that C 1 C r. Ideed, take a vertex x C 1. If C 1 C r =, the C 1 C(x, {r}) < C 1 = C 1 C r which cotradicts the miimality of C 1 C r. Thus we ca choose a vertex x i C 1 C r. Take C(x, [r] {1}). These compoets cover each vertex outside C 1 C r, hece at least (1 r ) vertices. (r 1) Case : k 1 r 1 (i.e., k i r 1 for all i). Notice that Case 1 ad Case overlap. However, this overlappig categorizatio will be coveiet whe examiig sharpess. For a vertex v ad a color i [r], let d i (v) = {u V (G) : Col(uv) = {i}}, i.e., the umber of eighbors of v that are coected to v by a edge havig oly color i. It is eough to show that there exists v V ad i {1,..., r} such that d i (v) r. (r 1) Ideed, i this case C(v, [r] {i}) cover each vertex except those that are coected to r v by a edge of uique color i, that is, at most vertices are ucovered. (r 1) Let m i = {uv E(G) : Col(uv) = {i}}, ad M i = {uv E(G) : i Col(uv)}. Sice v V d i (v) = m i, it is eough to show that there exists a color i such that m i r. For this, it is eough to show that r (r 1) i=1 m i r(r ). We have (r 1) ri=1 m i = ( ) t where t deotes the umber of edges havig multiple colors. It is ot hard to see that t 1 [ ri=1 M r 1 i ( )], sice each edge has at most r colors. Claim 16. If l = k i r 1, the M i l. (r 1) Proof. ( ) Let the ( ) cardialities of the compoets of color i be γ 1,..., γ l. The M i = γ1 + + γl γ = 1 + +γ l γ 1+ +γ l = γ 1 + +γ l. Now it is eough to show that γ 1 + +γ l but this follows from the Arithmetic l Mea Quadratic Mea Iequality. Usig the claim, we get that t 1 [ ri=1 M r 1 i ( )] 1 [ r( (r 1)) ( )] r 1 (r 1) = r r(r 1) (r 1) +(r 1) =. (r 1) (r 1) So r i=1 m i = ( ( ) ) t + = (r 1) (r 1) +(r 1) = r(r ). (r 1) (r 1) (r 1) For the proof of sharpess see Theorem Characterizatio of sharp examples I this subsectio we characterize the sharp examples for Theorem 14. For this, we will eed the defiitio of a affie plae of order r 1. 9
Defiitio 17. A icidece structure A = (P, L), where the elemets of P are referred to as the poits, ad the elemets of L are referred to as the lies is called a affie plae of order r 1 if the followig five coditios hold. (i) Every pair of poits are coected by exactly oe lie. (ii) For each poit x ad lie L such that x / L, there exists exactly oe lie L such that x L, but L is disjoit from L. (iii) Each lie cotais at least poits. (iv) Each poit is icidet with at least 3 lies. (v) The maximum umber of pairwise parallel lies is r 1. We also eed the followig defiitio. Defiitio 18. We call a multi edge-colored complete graph G the blowup of a affie plae if there exists a affie plae A = (P, L), a positive iteger b ad a fuctio f : V (G) P such that the lies of A are colored such that two lies have the same color if ad oly if they are disjoit (i.e., parallel), for each poit p P, {v V (G) : f(v) = p} = b i Col(uv) if ad oly if f(u) ad f(v) are icidet to a commo lie of color i (ote that this icludes the case if f(u) = f(v)). Theorem 19. For a multi r-edge-colored complete graph G o vertices, the maximum umber of vertices coverable by r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors equals ( 1 r (r 1) ) if ad oly if G is a blowup of a affie plae. Proof. Suppose G is a sharp example, i.e., o r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors ca cover more tha ( ) ( 1 r (r 1) vertices ad 1 r ) (r 1) is a iteger. As oted i the begiig of the proof of Theorem 14, if the edge-colorig of G is ot spaig or r =, the all the vertices of G ca be colored by r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors, hece i these cases, there is o sharp example. Now suppose that the colorig of G is spaig, ad r 3. We examie the proof of Theorem 14 to see how the iequalities ca be equalities. I Case 1, k 1 = = k r = r 1 for a sharp example, sice otherwise kr 1 k 1 k r would be strictly smaller tha r. (r 1) Also i Case, k 1 = = k r = r 1 for a sharp example, sice we eed M i = for each i. But if k (r 1) i < r 1 for some i, the M i k i >. (r 1) Hece a sharp example is ecessarily i the itersectio of Case 1 ad Case, ad the bouds i both cases are sharp for it. 10
We claim that the itersectio of ay two compoets of differet colors must have cardiality exactly (ad cosequetly, the cardiality of ay moochromatic compoet is exactly ). Let i, j [r] be two differet colors. We kow k r 1 i = k j = r 1 (r 1) ad by (1) C i C j = (r ). () C i C i, C j C j Choose C i C i ad C j C j such that s = C i C j is miimum ad recall from the proof of Case 1 that i this case C i C j. If s < r (r 1), the for ay x C i C j, the compoets C(x, [r] {i}) cover each vertex outside C i C j, hece strictly more tha ( 1 r (r 1) ) vertices but this cotradicts the assumptio. Sice s is the miimum, it caot be bigger tha the average, thus for ay C i C i ad C j C j we have C i C j = r. Now take ay C (r 1) i C i ad C j, C j C j. As C i C j = C i C j, we also have C i C j = C i C j. By symmetry we also get C i C j = C i C j for ay C j C j ad C i, C i C i, provig the claim. Moreover, from t = r 1 [ 1 ri=1 M i ( )], for each edge uv E(G) either Col(uv) = 1 or Col(uv) = r. From this, the followig useful property follows: Claim 0. If C 1 C r where C 1 C 1,..., C r C r, the for arbitrary 1 i < j r, we have C i C j = C 1 C r. Proof. If there were a vertex x C 1 C r ad a vertex y C i C j C l for some l, the the edge xy would have color i ad j but ot color l, which would cotradict the fact that either Col(xy) = 1 or Col(xy) = r. Now let us take the followig icidece structure A: Let the poits of A be the oempty itersectios C 1 C r, where C 1 C 1,..., C r C r. Let the lies of A be the moochromatic compoets of G. Let a poit correspodig to C 1 C r be icidet with the lies correspodig to C 1,..., C r. Sice each vertex of G is icidet with edges of each color, this way each vertex of G is mapped to a poit of A. Also, for a oempty itersectio, C 1 C r = C 1 C. Sice C 1 C =, each (r 1) poit of A correspods exactly to =: b vertices of G. (r 1) We claim that A is a affie plae of order r 1. Moreover, we claim that two lies are disjoit if ad oly if the correspodig moochromatic compoets have the same color. Note that if we prove these statemets, it follows that G is the blowup of a affie plae. We have already proved that two compoets of G of differet colors have a oempty itersectio. O the other had, two moochromatic compoets of the same color are disjoit by the defiitio of a compoet. Hece ideed two lies i A are disjoit if ad oly if the correspodig moochromatic compoets have the same color. To prove that A is a affie plae of order r 1, we eed to check the five coditios give i Defiitio 17. (i) We claim that the poits correspodig to C 1 C r ad C 1 C r where C 1, C 1 C 1,..., C r, C r C r have at least oe commo moochromatic 11
compoet. Ideed, take x C 1 C r ad y C 1 C r. Sice G is complete, xy E(G). This edge has at least oe color, hece x ad y have a commo moochromatic compoet. Now we claim that these two poits have at most oe commo moochromatic compoet. Ideed, by Claim 0, if C i = C i ad C j = C j for some i j, the C 1 C r = C i C j = C i C j = C 1 C r. (ii) Let C be the moochromatic compoet of G correspodig to the lie L. As we oted before, two moochromatic compoets i G are disjoit if ad oly if they have the same color. Suppose that C has color i. Let C be the compoet of color i that cotais x. The lie correspodig to C satisfies the requiremets of (ii). (iii) If there is a lie cotaiig oly oe poit, let the moochromatic compoet of G correspodig to the lie be C i C i ad the itersectio correspodig to the poit be C 1 C r where C 1 C 1,..., C r C r. From the fact that the lie has oly oe poit, C i C 1 C i 1 C i+1 C r. But the C 1,... C i 1, C i+1,..., C r cover all the vertices of G sice G is complete. Thus, the example is ot sharp. (iv) It ca be see from the defiitio that each poit of A is icidet with r 3 lies. (v) This follows from the fact that two lies are parallel if ad oly if they correspod to moochromatic compoets of the same color, ad for each color, there are exactly r 1 moochromatic compoets. With this, we have proved that ay sharp example eeds to be a blowup of a affie plae. Now we prove that the blowup of a affie plae is always a sharp example. We claim that r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors cover at most ( ) ( ) 1 r (r 1) = 1 r (r 1) b(r 1) = b ((r 1) r + ) vertices. Ideed, take the first compoet. This covers b(r 1) vertices. The secod compoet has a differet color from the first, hece they have a itersectio of size = b. Hece (r 1) the two compoets together cover at most b((r 1) 1) vertices. Ad so o, each subsequet compoet eeds to have a itersectio of size at least b with the uio of the previous oes, hece altogether, they cover at most b((r 1) r + ) vertices. We ca also see, that for coverig exactly b((r 1) r + ) vertices, we eed to take r 1 moochromatic compoets havig a commo itersectio of b poits. Remark 1. I the case if ( ) 1 r (r 1) is ot a iteger, it would be reasoable to call the multi r-edge-colored G sharp if the umber of vertices coverable by r 1 moochromatic compoets of pairwise differet colors is the miimum possible, i.e., (1 r (r 1) ). We do ot kow the structure of the sharp examples i this sese. Recall the defiitio of a trucated projective plae: Defiitio. Take a projective plae of order r 1. The trucated projective plae of order r 1 is the followig hypergraph: Remove a poit ad the lies icidet to it 1
from the projective plae. Let the vertices of the hypergraph be the remaiig poits, ad the hyperedges be the remaiig lies. Note that this is a r-partite r-uiform hypergraph (the partite classes correspod to the uremoved poits that were cotaied by a removed lie). Trucated projective plaes play a importat role i the study of Ryser s cojecture. They give a family of sharp examples. Moreover, the oly other kow family of extremals [1] is also costructed usig trucated projective plaes. I [1] it is show that the trucated Fao-plae is the mai buildig block i the characterizatio of the sharp hypergraphs for Ryser s cojecture i the case r = 3. I additio, the ear-extremal family recetly costructed by Haxell ad Scott [13] is also based o trucated projective plaes. Note that if oe switches the role of vertices ad hyperedges, a affie plae becomes a trucated projective plae. Hece Theorem 19 gives the followig result for hypergraphs: Theorem 3. Let H be a r-partite r-uiform itersectig hypergraph. The maximum umber of hyperedges coverable by a multi-colored set of size r 1 equals to ( 1 ) r (r 1) E(H) if ad oly if H ca be obtaied from a trucated projective plae by takig b parallel copies of each hyperedge for some fixed iteger b. 4 Ryser s cojecture i the case (H) = For r =, Ryser s cojecture follows from Kőig s theorem. I this sectio, we prove Ryser s cojecture for the very special case (H) = ad r 3. We ote, that i this special case, the hypergraph does ot eve eed to be r-partite for Ryser s boud to hold. Theorem 4. Let H be a r-uiform hypergraph with r 3 ad (H) =. The τ(h) (r 1) ν(h). Proof. Let the dual of a hypergraph H be the followig hypergraph H, with multiple hyperedges possible: V (H ) = E(H) E(H ) = {{e E(H) : e v} : v V (H)} take as a multiset. We have H = H, hece vertices of H correspod exactly to hyperedges i H ad hyperedges of H correspod exactly to vertices i H. Note that a set of vertices T V (H) covers the hyperedges of H if ad oly if the correspodig hyperedge set i H covers the vertices of H, so τ(h) = (H ). The degree of a vertex of H is the cardiality of the correspodig hyperedge of H. Hece H is r-uiform if ad oly if H is r-regular, cosequetly (H ) = r. By defiitio, α (H ) = ν(h). 13
If (H) =, the H is a hypergraph with hyperedge cardialities oe or two, ad the statemet of the theorem is equivalet to (H ) ( (H ) 1)α (H ). We ca suppose that there are o hyperedges of cardiality oe i H. Ideed, if a hyperedge of cardiality oe is cotaied by a hyperedge of cardiality two, the we ca remove the hyperedge of cardiality oe. This does ot chage the value of α, ad = (H ) ca oly decrease. Moreover, the value of ca oly icrease by removig a hyperedge, sice a coverig hyperedge set of the modified hypergraph is also a coverig hyperedge set i the origial hypergraph. Hece if the statemet is true for the hypergraph after removig a hyperedge, the the statemet is also true for the origial hypergraph. If a hyperedge of cardiality oe is ot cotaied by a hyperedge of cardiality two, the this hyperedge (or a parallel copy of it) eeds to occur i each hyperedge cover. Hece leavig this vertex ad the cardiality oe hyperedges icidet to it, decreases by oe. O the other had, α also decreases by oe ad ca oly decrease. Hece if the statemet is true to the modified hypergraph, it is also true for the origial hypergraph. The followig lemma proves the theorem if the cardiality two hyperedges form a graph which is ot a cycle. Lemma 5. If G is a graph which is ot a cycle, the (G) ( (G) 1) α(g). Proof. We will deote by G[X] the subgraph of G iduced by the vertex set X. For a set of vertices U V, we deote by Γ(U) the set of eighbors of U. The statemet is easily see to be true for complete graphs with at least four vertices, hece we ca suppose that G is ot complete. Let = V (G). Sice G is ot a cycle, usig Brooks theorem, G is colorable by (G) colors. As cosequece, α(g). Take a idepedet vertex set I V (G) of maximum size, ad take a maximum matchig M i G[V (G) I]. Let X = V (M) ad Y = V I X. Sice M is a maximum matchig i G[V (G) I], it follows that Y is a idepedet set. Hece G[Y I] is a bipartite graph. We show that i G[Y I] there is a matchig coverig Y. Suppose for cotradictio that the coditio of Hall s theorem is ot satisfied, i.e., U Y such that Γ(U) < U. The (I Γ(U)) U is a idepedet set, whose size is greater tha I, which cotradicts the choice of I. Now take the followig set of edges: the edges of M, the edges of a matchig coverig Y i G[Y I], ad for each thus ucovered vertex i I, a edge coverig it. This is a edge cover of G of cardiality at most M + Y + ( I Y ) = M + I. Thus M + I. We show that M + I ( (G) 1)α(G). Ideed, sice X I = α(g) (1 1/ ), we have M (1 1/ ) = ( 1) ( 1)α. Thus M + I ( 1)α + α ( 1)α. 14
Now the oly remaiig case is if the cardiality two hyperedges of H form a cycle, that is, H is a cycle with some additioal cardiality oe hyperedges. Suppose that the cycle has l vertices, plus there are k isolated vertices. The the vertex set of H ca be covered by l + k hyperedges, ad α (H ) = l + k. Sice r = (H ) >, this meas (H ) ( (H ) 1)α (H ). Refereces [1] A. Abu-Khazeh, J. Barát, A. Pokrovskiy, T. Szabó A family of extremal hypergraphs for Ryser s cojecture, arxiv: (016) [] A.
