1 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 1 of 9 Procedure: Creating Roads: LAB 09 Create the Building Block Model Start by creating a plane. Next add an Edit Mesh modifier to the plane and select Polygon. Drag your mouse over a few polygons, that are in a row, and then use ctrl+left click to highlight a few more rows. While the polygons are selected click Render-> Material Editor. Under Material Editor select the first material ( it's the grayball) double click on the grey box next to Diffuse option and change the color to black. And either drag the black over to the polygons or select the icon within the highlighted yellow box that says apply material. Notice that we have now created roads for our city. Save this city map as "citymap" or by any other name that is easy to remember. Creation of buildings: Create a box with the following settings: Length/Width: 90, Height: 300. Right click on the box and convert it to editable poly. Next, select the vertical edges and chamfer them twice. First by 7.5 units and then by 2.5 units.

2 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 2 of 9 Select the top polygon and extrude it by 5 units.select the side polygons of the part we just extruded and the polygons created from chamfering. Then, extrude them by 5 units. Now let s get back to the top of the model and again select the polygons there. Inset them a little bit and then bevel them to create a not so boring rooftop.

3 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 3 of 9 We have finished the basic shape of the building and it s time to start adding some details in the form of windows. To do that, we first need to select the big, side polygons and turn on the slice Plane Switch to the front view and position the slice plane just beneath the roof. Now click on the slice button to create a cut in the selected polygons and then move the slice plane downwards. Repeat this until you reach the bottom of the building.

4 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 4 of 9 Rotate the slice plane 90 degrees and repeat the same process as described before to create vertical cuts. After finishing in the front view, switch to side view and repeat the creation of vertical lines. Next, deselect some polygons that were just created (small side and bottom polygons) so that the remaining selection looks like the next picture.

5 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 5 of 9 Inset the selection by 1.5 units and for the inset type select by polygon. Then extrude the same selection by -1.5 units and with the option local normal. Select polygons shown in the picture and inset and extrude them same amount as before. Only difference is that inset type option should be now set to group.

6 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 6 of 9 Only thing left to do is to make an entrance to the building. Do that by creating some boxes and fiddling around with they re position and size settings. Next we will create smaller buildings around the main one, add another box, Edit Poly to the citymap. Then select smaller polygons (squares) around the building, and click Inset.

7 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 7 of 9 Now with the newly created polygons slightly extrude them and you will see tiny buildings appear. Also they are not directly located next to the road, which gives the impression of a sidewalk. Creating Water To create a water way, such as a man made pond or waterway, use the same Inset technique that we used to create the buildings. Then add an Edit Mesh to the map and color in the new polygons, a light blue color. Finally slightly extrude the polygons bordering the water that was previously created with the Inset. Next if you want to create a sidewalk effect, add an Edit Poly modifier and highlight the polygons on the top border of the waterway, basically the polygons shown above. The click on the box next to Inset. Select "By polygon" and slightly raise the inset level. You will notice tiles being formed and as you can expect next we Extrude them "by group" to create a sidewalk effect.

8 Computer graphics LAB 09 Page 8 of 9 Creating Foliage Select a Region where you will like foliage to be created and just like we did for the roads, add an Edit Mesh modifier, and select the polygons and then using the Material Editor, change the color of the area to green. Then to add bumps or hills to the region, keep that same area selected and add a Noise modifier. You may want to experiment to find the best results for you, but here are some results below that I got, that you may want to use. Now to add the foliage click on the Create Panel and select AEC Extended and then Foliage. Select the plant that you want and place it in the model. Notice that the plant is incredibly large and t amount of leaves will be very expensive while rendering. To correct the problem extend the Parameters panel and drastically lower the size to something more suitable. Also depending on your processing power, you may want to lower the density, but most importantly lower the Level of Detail to "Medium."
