In this class you will learn to think and design in three dimensions, using (Autodesk) Maya software. Your performance is based upon: Examinations (3 Tests) (30 pts) Lab work (5 tutorials) (55 pts) Professionalism (Participation Attendance) (15 pts) Sketchbook drawings (Part of Participation Grade) Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this course, a student should be able to: 1. Navigate comfortably through the Autodesk Maya User Interface 2. Understand and apply the dependency graph, image planes, nodes, attributes, connections and pivots 3. Use NURBS and polygonal modeling skills for mechanical and organic purposes 4. Apply lighting, cameras, textures and materials to an object 5. Work with the Hypergraph, the Hypershade, the Dope Sheet and the Graph Editor to create keyframe animations 6. Understand the importance of Set Driven Key and its potential use in a character animation setup 7. Use Deformers and Skeletons to animate 3D characters Key Activities from the Electronic Game Content Development skill standards, recognized by the Texas Skill Standards Board: Create UV Maps Setup Materials and Shaders Create and implement a character rig for mechanical animation Adjust and edit skin weights Create animations and special effects for FMV (Full Motion Video) Create cycled keyframed motion for characters Create Particle animation - 1 -

ATTITUDES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Courses in the core curriculum at Northwest Vista College (NVC) seek to foster the growth of students in areas that the faculty has termed Attitudes, Skills, and Knowledge (ASK). Our role is to help you with that growth through the courses we offer you, through the opportunity to work closely with your fellow students, and by the co-curricular services and opportunities available at NVC. We hope you will demand excellence from us and from yourself. Attendance and Participation Policy (Professionalism): You are responsible for everything said and done in each class session. Absences will affect your participation grade. More than three absences during the semester will result in the loss of a full letter grade. If you miss five or more classes prior to the withdrawal deadline, you may be asked to drop the class. While in class you should spend all your time on class related work or research. Participation in class is vital for success, keep communication lines open with your instructor and your peers. Feel free to ask for help when needed as well as be helpful to others. Be respectful of other s work environment by maintaining a low level of noise in the lab

3 Absences may be excused with appropriate documentation and must be given to the instructor immediately upon return to class. If you know you are going to be absent, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor and to find out what assignments were missed. Tardiness: Class begins and ends on the scheduled time. Being 10 minutes late counts as a tardy. If you have 3 tardies, it will count as an absence. Being consistently tardy will have an effect on you participation grade. Leaving early will also be considered in assessing your participation. Late assignments: No late assignments will be accepted without discussion with the instructor. It is better to turn in an incomplete assignment and get a numerical grade, than miss an assignment and get a zero. Drop Date: If you miss more than 5 classes, you may be asked to drop the class. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to officially drop from the class to avoid failing the class (F). Students may drop this class without academic penalty if they drop before the deadline. See school calendar on the website for exact date or call Student Success Center Special Accommodations Policy: As per Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, if a special accommodation is needed, please contact Sharon Dresser in the Access Office in the Student Success Center Academic expectation: To be successful in this class, students will be expected to develop a sense of personal responsibility and work ethic. Because the course is technical as well as creative and artistic, students are expected to buy a sketchbook and practice their drawing skills. Sketchbooks will be reviewed 4 times by the instructor in with a critique. Annoying electronic behavior: Turn off cell phones and beepers. No texting or ing during lectures, demos or tests No gaming during class There is absolutely no eating or drinks allowed in the lab. Any student caught eating or drinking any beverage other than water will be asked to leave the lab and may be suspended from using the lab or have their lab privileges permanently revoked. Respect the equipment. During the course of the class you may become frustrated with the computers when you cannot figure something out. This is the nature of Computer Graphics, please do not take your frustration out on the workstations! Do not log into the machines on any account other than the Student account. Any students who logs in as another user without direct permission from the instructor will be asked to leave the lab and may be suspended from using the lab or have their lab privileges permanently revoked. Never remove anything from the lab that you did not bring in with you. Any students caught removing equipment or software from the lab will be removed permanently from the lab and appropriate action will be taken against that student. All of this equipment is provide for your education, however, it does not belong to you
