2 NAZARENE MISSIONS INTERNATIONAL Bill Brandon, District President 18 Sandstone Ct., Troy, IL That the world may know Congratulations to our Children for raising over $1,500 for Sun Valley Indian School. Your gift will be presented on your behalf to the School by the W&W team while they are there. Good job kids! You are an inspiration to the adults! Abby Heppe coordinated this project. Thank you Abby for your hard work. Our thanks to Missionary John Moore for the very successful Spring Zone Tour. Those of us that were able to hear him speak and see his presentation were truly blessed and very informed on how the Lord is moving to build His Kingdom in the Eurasia Region. We will continue to pray for recovery of his mother-in-law who recently had a stroke. Vicki was unable to be with John on this tour as she is assisting in her mother's recovery. We will continue to pray for the Lord's work in the areas John was telling us about. We are reminded how blessed we are, in this part of the world and with that blessing comes great responsibility to share our material blessings by giving to Missions which enables the Word to be spread to those that have not heard. Thank you so much for your support by contributing to the WEF. Our Deputation Coordinator Sandy Stickler, and her husband, Allen, worked many long hours putting this tour together. Thank you so much, Sandy, for all the work that you and Allen did. Remember to pray for the Work & Witness teams that are going to Bradenton Florida and The Sun Valley Indian School. The World Evangelism Fund Works The World Evangelism Fund (WEF) is our global financial heartline and lifeline in an expanding international church, the essential foundation for all Nazarene mission giving. In local churches around the world, pastors, church boards, and NMI leaders network prayerfully and strategically to fulfill WEF giving goals. Because You Give, WEF Supports o World Mission (WM) transformation in 151 world areas o Global missionaries deployed from 34 world areas o 774 missionaries and their kids (equipping, salary, housing, medical, travel to field) o Mission Corps, tentmakers, Youth in Mission, 676 Work & Witness teams in 2007 o Infrastructure for regional, field, and district ministries, including national leadership development o 10,500 churches (+11%), more than 1 million members in WM (+12%) o 428 districts with 8,850 credentialed ministers o 40 Bible colleges, seminaries; 11 universities, 9,600 resident students o Education extension centers in every nation, 12,000 extension students o 64 medical clinics and hospitals; thousands of compassionate ministry centers o 320 retired missionaries receiving pension income o Worship in 212 languages; Bibles/literature translated into 67 languages o JESUS Film, World Mission DVD, Alabaster buildings April is Mission Education Month Why Mission Education Knowledge is key to involvement. With an understanding of the needs of the world and what the church is doing to meet those needs, we are more likely to commit to the support of missions through prayer, giving, communication, and going. How Does Mission Education Take Place? Learning takes place in a variety of venues. Experiences, listening to and reading stories, and getting to know missionaries on a personal level enhance mission awareness. Your local NMI president or mission education secretary can tell you of the many exciting opportunities for mission education. Use of age-appropriate curricula and NMI reading books/tapes provide learning opportunities and activities designed to engage people of all ages in missions. Children's Mission Education Youth Mission Education Adult Mission Education For multicultural congregations, the International Mission Education Journal is a curriculum piece that includes mission education lessons for adults and children. It is produced in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Churches should contact their district NMI president for more information on this resource. The hands-on experiences of Volunteer Opportunities programs often provide opportunities for people to see missions firsthand. Audiovisuals offer people the ability to "see and hear" missions. Each church receives an annual audiovisual catalog. Deputation services, Faith Promise conventions, district-sponsored events with a missionary speaker, and the presence of missionariesin-residence at youth and children's camps allow for interaction between missionaries and the people who support them through their giving and prayers.

8 Missional Strategy MARK COPLEY, District Missionary P.O. Box 373, Casey, IL Office: ; Cell: Small Church, Big Ministry I had the joy of sharing the recent Holiness Summit at ONU with Willard Anderson, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The church there averages about 30 people on Sunday mornings. But as I listened to Willard tell of the church s ministry, I realized that they were reaching far beyond the Sunday morning worship service. Pastor Anderson has served in Mt. Carmel since the summer of 2005, and for most of the first year, the church struggled financially and morale was low. Willard inspired the church to begin praying for a way to reach out to their community and share the word of God with the lost. He longed for the members of his congregation to find a way to serve others -- to get beyond the poor me spirit that often haunts those in small churches. The best way out of that, says Willard was for them to give themselves to others. In May of 2006, God answered their prayers in a wonderful way. A retired Nazarene minister contacted Pastor Anderson to describe a food ministry, called Bread of Life in nearby Linville, Indiana. Willard soon visited the ministry himself, did the paperwork, and with the approval of his church board, started Bread for the Soul and Body, an outreach ministry of the Mt. Carmel church. The results have been fantastic. The food pantry officially distributes groceries to needy families one Friday per month, but food is always available to anyone in need. On average, about 290 people, representing 100 households are served at the monthly distribution. The church keeps records and, since their inception, they have registered 475 people from 239 households. Local news media have reported on the ministry s success, which has brought not only more people to serve, but has inspired Christians from other churches, and their pastors, to volunteer as well. Pastor Anderson, claims Matthew 4:4 as the ministry s motto: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. And, the gospel is served as regularly as the groceries. On the typical distribution day, the doors open at 8:30am, though many begin lining up an hour earlier. Refreshments are served and volunteers fellowship with those who are there for food. A special handout is given to each family that includes jokes, scripture, and gotchas (attention grabbing facts about salvation). Sometimes there is music as well. At 9:30, Pastor Anderson preaches an evangelistic message. Normally, there are over 40 unchurched people listening, and Willard counts seven people who have been brought to the Lord through the food ministry. There are also several people attending the church now who first came to volunteer with the ministry. Following the message, the food is distributed, assembly line-style which allows volunteers to talk with every person who goes through the line. Before they leave, Willard says, they usually get invited to church or Sunday school at least a dozen times. When asked how the church affords this ministry, he is eager to explain. It s totally a God thing! Every time we ve needed something, He has provided. Refrigerators, storage cabinets, shelving, and desks, all have been donated from the community. Everything we have, God has given to us. And the church s needs are being met as well. On New Year s Eve 2007, Pastor Anderson received a call from a lady who wanted to make a donation to the Linville ministry. Because of the holidays, no one was there to receive her check, and she wanted to make the donation that day, so it would be deductible from her 2007 taxes. He agreed to meet her at a local restaurant to get the check for the Linville food pantry. But, before he left, she asked him about the needs of the Mt. Carmel church. Willard says, I didn t tell her, but we had almost no money in the bank, a $1,300 interest payment due, and our monthly insurance premium too. I had no idea how we were going to make it. She asked how much we needed, but I refused to tell her. I only said that we could use whatever she wanted to give. She took out her check book, wrote him a check, and handed it to him. It was made out to the Mt. Carmel church for $15,000. I couldn t see the check for the tears, Willard said. If it had not had the food ministry, we would never have seen that money. God has blessed the church in so many ways as they have reached out to those in need. I don t do this for me, says Pastor Anderson, I do it for the souls out there. Pray for Pastor Anderson and the Mt. Carmel church as they serve their community with food and the Bread of Life.
