1 Globalstar Mobile Position Determination Technology put to the test Johnny Rice, AlaskaReport.com / AP&T Juneau, 2/10/2003 MPD or Mobile Position Determination is a technology used by the Globalstar System to determine the geographic position of a user terminal (UT). In layman s terms, MPD uses time, angle and distance information from the satellite signals, combined with an algorithm to determine geographic position in latitude and longitude. There are many variables that will affect the accuracy of MPD. Some of these are: Number of satellites serving the call Distance to the user from the satellites Position of the satellite(s) in the sky It should be understood that MPD does not posses the inherent accuracy of the GPS (Global Positioning System). Most modern GPS receivers track twelve (12) satellites at one time and derive very accurate position location. Since the Globalstar user terminal is capable of tracking a maximum of three satellites at any given time, the accuracy of MPD is considerably less than GPS. From our experience and from information obtained from other Globalstar users, a person in Southeast or South-Central Alaska could expect readings as accurate as one half to one mile. The closer to the temperate latitudes (approx. +/-35 degress latitude), the greater the accuracy. Position location data is a user menu feature MENU-4-4 on all Globalstar GSP-1600 user terminals. Software version and higher is required for this feature to be available. Simply press MENU-8-3 to view the software revision in your UT. Should your phone not have this capacity, contact your Globalstar dealer. If you have a UT that is position location capable, simply press MENU-4-3 to view the latitude, longitude information. Please note that you must have a call in process for this information to be updated. To get up-to-the-moment position information, you must press UPDATE. Pressing the DOWN ARROW or # key will enable the user to view the MPD error as well as the time and date the location information was obtained. Current Globalstar coverage map Alaska Available from:
