1 In-motion Upgrade Instructions The following instructions explain how to upgrade a TracVision R4/SA/S3/SF/S2 for in-motion operation. Following this upgrade, the TracVision system will acquire and track satellites both while the vehicle is stationary and in motion. During the upgrade process, you will perform the following steps: 1. Remove the linear actuator 2. Install the gyro 3. Install the new linear actuator 4. Configure the antenna The upgrade process will convert the TracVision system into its complementary in-motion system (see Table 1). Warranty Note After the upgrade is completed, the TracVision R4/SA/S3/SF/S2 system will still be covered by its original warranty and remaining warranty period. For technical support purposes, the serial number for the original TracVision system will also apply to the upgraded unit. 2 Materials Provided Table 2 lists all of the materials provided with the In-motion Upgrade Kit. Table 2 Materials Provided Part Part # Quantity Gyro Gyro Gasket #10 Flat Washer #10-32 Self-locking Nut Cable Clamp Tie-wrap Linear Actuator Remove the Linear Actuator To remove the linear actuator, you will need to disconnect the elevation axis motor shaft from the reflector bracket and disconnect the actuator cable from the main PCB (printed circuit board). Before performing the upgrade, remove the appropriate vehicle fuse to disconnect power. Ensure power is removed from both the antenna and the receiver(s) or multiswitch. 1. Turn off the antenna and remove the appropriate vehicle fuse to disconnect power. Ensure power is removed from both the antenna and the receiver(s) or multiswitch. 2. Remove the 8 screws securing the radome (see Figure 1). Remove the radome and set it aside in a safe place. Figure 1 Radome Screws 2

3 3. a. If the antenna has a bracket as shown in Figure 2, remove the quick release pin from the pivot bracket. If the antenna has a bracket as shown in Figure 3, use needle-nose pliers to remove and save the E-ring from one end of the connecting rod. 4 4. Unscrew and remove the elevation axis motor shaft from the linear actuator (see Figure 4). Remove the two pan head screws that secure the actuator to the actuator bracket (see Figure 4). When removing and replacing the main PCB cover, be sure not to drop any of the small screws inside the mechanism. If a screw is lost within the baseplate, it MUST be retrieved to avoid causing any damage when the unit rotates. 6. Remove the pan head screws from the main PCB cover flanges. Remove the main PCB cover (see Figure 5). Figure 5 Main PCB and Rotating Plate Main PCB Cover Pan Head Screws The main PCB is static-sensitive. Ensure you take the necessary grounding precautions before handling. Main PCB Rotating Plate The antenna reflector is not shown in several figures for clarity purposes only. Do not remove the antenna reflector! 4

5 7. Disconnect the linear actuator cable from the Elevation Motor connector (J2) on the main PCB (see Figure 6). Figure 7 shows the TracVision SA/SF/S2 main PCB, while Figure 8 shows the TracVision R4/S3 main PCB. 6 8. Remove the corrugated sleeve from the wires (see Figure 6). 9. Set the old linear actuator aside. 2 Install the Gyro Now you need to mount the gyro to the back of the antenna reflector bracket, as pictured in Figure 9. Fit the gyro gasket over the four mounting studs on the back of the antenna reflector bracket. 2. Place the gyro on the reflector bracket studs. The side of the gyro with the No Hand Hold sticker should be facing up. 3. Attach the gyro to the antenna reflector bracket using the four flat washers and locking nuts supplied in the Upgrade Kit. 6

7 4. Connect the gyro cable to the antenna gyro connector (J11) on the main PCB (see Figures 7 and 8 on page 5). Figure 10 shows the gyro properly installed. Figure 10 Properly Installed Gyro 5. a. If the system was a TracVision SA/SF/S2: Secure the antenna gyro cable to the rotating plate using the cable clamp and screw, as shown in Figure 11. Position the ferrite coil on the main PCB side of the cable clamp. 8 b. If the system was a TracVision R4/S3: Secure the antenna gyro cable to the rotating plate using the cable clamp and screw, as shown in Figure 12. Position the cable clamp between the ferrite coil and the main PCB. If the system was a TracVision R4/S3: Using the supplied tie-wrap, secure the antenna gyro cable to the reflector bracket, as shown in Figure 13. 9 3 Install the New Linear Actuator After installing the gyro, follow the steps below to install the new linear actuator. 1. Place the corrugated sleeve, removed previously, around the wires for the new linear actuator (see Figure 6 on page 5). 2. Secure the new linear actuator to the actuator bracket using the two screws removed previously (see Figure 4 on page 4). 3. Connect the linear actuator cable to the Elevation Motor connector (J2) on the main PCB (see Figure 6 on page 5). 4. Reinstall the main PCB cover using the pan head screws removed previously (see Figure 5 on page 4). Make certain that all cables are running through the appropriate access slots in the cover and that the cables corrugated sleeves are positioned under the access slots. 5. Insert the elevation axis motor shaft into the linear actuator (see Figure 4 on page 4). 6. Secure the elevation axis motor shaft to the antenna bracket using the quick release pin or connecting rod/e-ring that you removed in Step 3 of Section 1, Remove the Linear Actuator. Ensure that all cables are clear of any moving parts that could cause damage to the unit. 7. Replace the radome you removed in Step 2 of Section 1, Remove the Linear Actuator. 4 Configure the Antenna Following the installation of the new linear actuator and the antenna gyro assembly, you will need to configure the antenna. To configure the antenna, you will need a PC with Windows HyperTerminal installed, or if you are a KVH-authorized dealer, download the KVH Flash Update Wizard through the KVH Partner Portal. 9

10 Connect a PC to the Antenna Maintenance Port If your computer does not have a DB9 serial COM port, you can use the following USB-to-RS232 adapter: IOGear part number GUC232A (visit 1. a. If the system was a TracVision SA: The antenna system s data cable has two connectors, one (male) connecting to the receiver, the other (female) free to connect to a PC (see Figure 14). Connect the data cable s female DB9 connector to the serial port on the PC (a 9-pin/25-pin connector adapter may be needed for some PCs). If the system was a TracVision R4/S3: Connect one end of a PC data cable to the DB9 connector on the switchplate (see Figure 15). 11 c. If the system was a TracVision SF (with a serial number before ): Connect one end of a PC data cable to the maintenance connector on the antenna baseplate (see Figure 16). Connect the other end to the serial port on your PC (a 9-pin/25-pin connector adapter may be needed for some PCs). If the system was a TracVision S2 or SF (with a serial number after ): Connect one end of a PC data cable to the maintenance port connector located on the rear of the switchplate (see Figure 17). To access this connector, you may need to remove the switchplate from the mounting surface. If you are using HyperTerminal, open it and establish the following settings: Bits per second: 9600 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: None If you are using the KVH Flash Update Wizard, double-click the KVH Flash Update Wizard shortcut on your computer s desktop to start the wizard. You do not need to flash the antenna; simply enter commands in the TracVision Antenna Comms window to configure the antenna. Figure 18 Flash Wizard TracVision Antenna Comms Window 3. Turn on the TracVision system. 4. Wait for the antenna to initialize (about 1 minute). Configure the Antenna 1. Type HALT then press Enter. 2. Type DEBUGON then press Enter. 12

13 3. Type the appropriate command for the antenna model you are upgrading (see Table 3) then press Enter. The system will automatically restart. Wait for the antenna to initialize (about 1 minute). 5. Type HALT then press Enter. 6. Type DEBUGON then press Enter. 7. (TracVision R4/S3 Only) Type =LSTEST then press Enter to begin the limit switch test. Wait for the test to pass or fail. If the test fails, contact KVH Technical Support. If Unknown Command appears, proceed to the next step. 8. Type EL,300 then press Enter. 9. Type =CALGYRO then press Enter. Verify that the Antenna Gyro Azimuth scale factor is between and and the Antenna Gyro Elevation scale factor is between and If the scale factors are outside these ranges, contact KVH Technical Support. If Unknown Command appears, type =CALAZ then press Enter. Verify that the Antenna Gyro Azimuth scale factor is between and Wait for Azimuth Calibration to complete, then type =CALEL then press Enter. Verify that the Antenna Gyro Elevation scale factor is between and (TracVision R4/S3 Only) Now you need to reinstall the selected satellite(s). Refer to the section entitled Selecting the Active Satellite in the Owner s Manual for complete instructions. Proceed to Step 12 after you have installed the selected satellite(s). 13

14 11. (TracVision SA/SF/S2 Only) (Optional) To acquire the selected satellite more quickly, type GOTO,AZ1234,ELYYY (where YYY represents the elevation to the satellite*) then press Enter. See Figure 19 to determine the approximate elevation to the DIRECTV 101 satellite. 15 11. (TracVision R4/S3 Only) Type the following command (see Key below) then press Enter. GPS,XX,<N or S>,YYY,<E or W> Key: XX = latitude (0-90) YYY = longitude (0-180) The antenna will use the location data to speed up satellite acquisition. You can find your latitude and longitude from one of the following sources: GPS (Global Positioning System) Appendix A contains position grids and tables, providing you with approximate latitude and longitude values for North America and Europe 12. Type ZAP then press Enter. The upgrade process is now complete! The TracVision system has now been modified for in-motion use. 15
