3 Richard Pelloquin November 16, June 10, 2015 As a proud and devoted credit union member and volunteer for over 35 years, Richard was a passionate advocate for the credit union movement. He served on the loan committee of CIT-CON Credit Union until its merger with CSE Federal Credit Union in In 1986 he was elected to the CSE Board of Directors - a position he held with honor and one which he dutifully and enthusiastically fulfilled until his death. He held his colleagues at CSE in the highest esteem and considered them all to be among his closest personal friends. We will deeply miss Richard and his personality. 3

4 Did You Know? Protect Your Mobile Phone From Cybercriminals If you re like millions of other people, you use your smartphone to send text messages, check your , access your financial accounts and medical records, and to store data such as contact address lists and maybe even lists of passwords. Unfortunately, you re not doing enough to protect those messages and information from Web-based threats such as viruses and spyware, or the possibility of loss and theft. Take these precautions to keep the information on your smartphone out of the hands of cybercriminals: These tips are about the device itself, but the No. 1 rule of security is to not connect to public Wi-Fi networks or networks you aren t familiar with to do important tasks. For example, don t check your CSE accounts when connected to a public Wi-Fi network in a restaurant. 4 Set up a PIN (personal identification number). It s usually a four-digit password. Don t use common passwords such as your birthdate, mother s maiden name, or pet names. For iphones, look in the General setting for a Passcode Lock. Android devices have a Location and Security option. If you have a BlackBerry, go to Options, then Security. Use caution when downloading apps. Use recognized sources only, such as Apple s App Store, Google s Android Market, and Amazon s Appstore. Regardless of the source, read reviews and scrutinize requested permissions before downloading an app. Use a free security service. Many smartphone makers have over-the-air backup, remote phone locating, remote phone locking, and data-erasing capabilities. Apple makes a free Find My iphone app for iphone 4 and later versions; for Androids and BlackBerries, try an app called Lookout. This software allows you to lock the phone or even erase data remotely. Lookout soon will be available for all versions of iphones. Find out how to change your settings to not allow geotagging on photos and videos. A geotag is a bit of data embedded in photos and videos that provides the longitude and latitude of where the photo or video was taken. Disable your browser s auto-fill feature. Android and iphone mobile Web browsers will remember your usernames and passwords for websites you visit often, making it easy for anyone who picks up your lost phone to log into your accounts. For the iphone: Tap Settings, Safari, Auto-fill, then turn the Names & Passwords switch off. For Android: Open the browser, tap the Menu key, then tap settings; under the Security Settings heading, clear the Remember Passwords checkbox. Secure your passwords. Take them out of your memos and contact list info, and get a password management app instead. Newer BlackBerries have a built-in password organizer, called Password Keeper. Find it in the Applications menu. For other smartphones, check out password management apps such as PasswordWallet, 1Password, LastPass, and SplashID. Turn off your Bluetooth when not using it. That will save your battery life on the bluetooth and your mobile phone. Most important for security, while the automatic nature of the bluetooth connection is a huge benefit in terms of time and effort, it s also a benefit to people looking to send you data without your permission. 5 Shield Yourself From Swindles Fraudsters take advantage of innocent consumers daily through check, ATM, and Internet scams, and they're using the latest technology to pull off their scams. Know the latest trends to protect yourself. PHISHING SCAMS Phishers send fraudulent s containing authentic looking logos and graphics and ask for financial information. Some scams are activated when you simply open an , no clicking required. Once infected, the scammers change the IP address in your PC's hosts file to their choosing, associate the IP address with financial institution websites, and force your browser to go to fake websites. Change online banking and shopping TIP account passwords every three to six months. Consider using a password manager to generate and "remember" your passwords. To avoid being led to fraudulent websites, retype Web addresses in your browser rather than click through links. CHECK SCAMS Fraudsters increasingly use to contact victims; the most common check scam is the "Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud." You're told you'll be sent a check for an extra sum and you're asked to wire back the excess money. Scammers purport to be from other countries and claim you can collect on a sweepstakes or pay you to work at home. The realistic-looking checks are forgeries, but victims are responsible for money withdrawn against bad checks. TIP Don't send refunds or deliver goods in the time it takes cashiers' checks to clear. ATM SCAMS Skimming is one of the newer ATM scams. Using a skimmer--a card-swipe device that reads your ATM card--the fraudster uses a blank card to encode information from your ATM card and create a counterfeit. Your PIN is confiscated through a small camera mounted on the ATM. You won't know you've been scammed because your ATM card hasn't been stolen and still works at other machines. TIP Be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary at the ATM, such as oddlooking equipment or wires. Monitor accounts regularly for unusual activity. Identity Theft Victim Checklist If you are a victim, take these steps immediately CLOSE ACCOUNTS Close your accounts, including share drafts/checks or ATM cards--that have been tampered with or used fraudulently. Contact all financial institutions and lenders, credit card issuers, utility companies, and the Social Security Administration to notify them of the fraud. Follow up each conversation with a letter. FILE A REPORT File a report with law enforcement and insist on getting a copy of the report or the report number. PLACE ALERT ON CREDIT REPORT Place a fraud alert on your credit reports, ask for a free copy of your credit report, and review those reports for evidence of accounts you didn t open.
