Bar coding technology is most widely used in the laboratory, while the pharmacy department experienced the largest growth in this time frame.

More than half of the laboratory bar code purchases will be replacement purchases. 5 Summary of Installation 4,785 of 5,281 hospitals in 2010 (91percent) currently have installed bar coding or RFID technology in at least one department throughout the organization. Of these 4,785 hospitals, 107 hospitals have installed bar code or RFID technology in all seven departments. Laboratory is where bar coding is used the most and material management is where RFID is reported being used most often. 496 hospitals (nine percent) do not use bar coding technology in any of the seven areas identified in this report.
