3 BYOL 2017 MacKillop Catholic College Your Laptop is a learning tool, and each student is expected to bring a device. IN 2017 MacKillop moved to BYOL from years 7-12 This is due to: The increasing cost to buy and maintain laptops Government funding ending It wasn t sustainable for the College
4 How does it differ? Students bring their own laptops The laptops are connected to the ntschools guest network as opposed to the ntschools network
5 Ntschools Guest Network Students using BYOL devices use the ntschools guest network They use College internet They use our College network and other Software resources Office 365 is free for each student at MacKillop The College looks after all the network requirements: setting up user accounts, wireless issues, Office 365 or other file management issues for each student. * BYOL students are charged $110 per year for all the above services.
6 Support for parents who preferred a College device In 2016 laptop registration forms were available for parents. These laptops are fully supported by the College for technical issues. Physical damages are not covered. The College levy is $280 per year
7 Why the rollout of College laptops was delayed 1 technician had to work to get all the laptops ready as one of our technicians left at the end of last year Sorting out the accounts for all the new students was not an easy task for one person. With out the account sorted students were unable to use the device. I was away with no voice in the first week and the Vocation Education Training audit made it hard for me to support the technician in the second week. Third week back on track, I was able to fast rack the process and Laptops were given out

9 Questions about BYOL and using ntschools Guest Network The following questions were raised by one of our parents. So I am using these questions to help parents. Question 1: Why must a laptop be reimaged for a network connectivity issue? This is optional. By reimaging the laptop, it can connect to the ntschools network as opposed to the ntschools guest network. There are no connectivity issues. Once the ntschools account for a student is set up, they will get connection to the ntschoolsguest network.
10 Questions about using ntschools guest network Question 2 Pros and cons of reimaging v not. i.e is the guest network restricted in any way? - One issue we are trying to rectify is printing for BYOL student devices as the printers are accessible only on the ntschools network. - How do we address this now? by ing work to teachers or by using Schoology online classes set up by teachers. - What is the solution for this? The College is organising printing to address this issue.
11 Questions about using the ntschools guest network Question 3 If I opt to not reimage, can the school provide me with the connection/server details so I can configure school , internet, etc.? Same question for the MS Office registration/activation details - Parents and guardians need not worry about setting up any of these, as we will help BYOL students to organise these on their devices. - Ntschools and or MS Office installation works fine irrespective of whether it is a BYOL device or a College device. A document to help students to install MS Office at home was given to students.
12 If office 365 download is done on site, IT can help: If students have any doubts or issues downloading office 365 they can seek IT help. If they are confident to download at home an instruction sheet is available.
13 The biggest challenge now for the teachers: Many students are without laptops. we need your support to address this. Suggested vendors: - If you buy laptops from Harvey Norman please let them know the student is from MacKillop. Please don t buy any software. - Staples Any other questions about BYOL devices?
14 Laptop misuse Laptop mishandling and misuse is not acceptable and there are consequences Students and parents sign the user agreement BYOL and/or College devices Inappropriate use of internet, downloading games, playing games during class time are all dealt with immediately. Depending on the issue, it is either handled by the concerned teacher and or referred to Mrs Arakkal. Mrs Arakkal would love to give them another chance by signing a contract (depending on the issue) or if it is a serious issue discussion with the student, incident report and parent contact/meeting the process is followed through.
15 In the Classroom v v v v v v Use the laptop to complete assessments Follow instructions in class Follow the laptop rules Back up data Don t leave the laptop at the College unattended. BYOL or College laptop same rules apply - to support your learning.
16 BYOL devices -important College understands that it is students own laptop. So it is the responsibility of the students first and parents and guardians to ensure what personal information/games/music and or movies are stored on these devices. BYOL or College laptop it is used ONLY as a learning tool when they are in a classroom
17 IT Support IT support is available on campus: v Mrs Arakkal is the Director of IT, Teaching and Learning. Any delays with IT service, physical damage for college device please see Mrs Arakkal. v At times it is hard to find me- please go to the front office they will help to locate Mrs Arakkal v ICT support is available during Home Form, lunch and recess v students are allowed to seek IT help as directed by their teachers during class time ONLY if they need immediate help.
18 Safe use of internet on site Wireless access on site Students are provided with a protected surfing and networking environment. At home: It is parents/guardians responsibility
19 Protection at home Parent and student responsibility Educate them for appropriate use for a WIN WIN parents and teachers work as a team to support this process.
20 Important reminders: It is not SMART: Ø To share your laptop Ø To share your password Ø To save games and movies on your laptop Ø To play games or get distracted your laptop is for learning Ø To leave your laptop unattended There are consequences if you fail to respect the laptop and classroom rules depending on your teacher s report

25 What are the accessories? Laptop bag Charger They should look after their bag and the charger Report damaged bags or chargers Students should carry their laptops in the laptop bag off campus and on campus. No stickers on the laptop Have a name tag on the bags- to identify
26 If it is major physical damage: v Student should see Mrs Arakkal immediately. Physical damage for eg- a broken screen takes at least 2-3 weeks for repair. The process: v After discussion with the student about the incident he/she will complete an incident report for Lenovo with the details of the time, the place and the date. So it is mandatory to report issues immediately. v Mrs Arakkal contacts the Parent/guardian to give an update
27 College Devices- What is covered? All the technical repairs are covered YES Physical Damage: not covered Highly recommended to add the device under home/content insurance
28 College laptop damages reported: reported Examples v v v Younger brother throws it against a wall Screen broken- Holding it by the screen Vandalism- being silly, turning off other student laptops, picking it up from the table at the back, leaning on the chair with the laptop, laptop on the floor, careless handling, battery packs on the floortripping accidents. Golden Rules The laptop is ONLY for the student to usenot for family/friends Responsible handling Report the fault straight away Include all the relevant details in the report, explain clearly and be honest.
29 Repair Costs v All tech repairs are free of cost to the parents intentional/misuse damage will be considered depending on the incident. Physical- accidental damage is not covered
30 No laptop during lunch and recess Name tag on the laptop bags Bring laptops every day, charge laptops Carry them in the laptop bag Missing\misplaced College laptops report immediately. If it is not reported it is harder to trace and the device should be replaced
