3 Introduction to Cyber Security Cisco Networking Academy Cyber Security Essentials James Graham- Auerback Publications The Network Security Essentials Pete Herzog, Glen Norman, Bob Monroe & Marta Barcelo Jordan - ISECOM Note: Network performance monitoring (sometimes knows as packet sniffing) and intrusion detection is taught to students enrolled in the Information Technology Academy normally during their senior year. Packet sniffing is a legal activity and often used by network administrators. However, it can result in legal consequences as the result of illegal use. Most institutions will ban the activity unless authorized and the job role requires it. Students who are found to have willfully used the software for other than authorized activity will be recommended for administrative action. There will be no exceptions. Each student will need a one-inch, three-ring binder and five sheet protectors for his/her personal engineering journal for note taking. This binder will also be used for the purpose of a resume, job application, student projects documentation and certificate of completion to be issued by Cisco Systems upon successful completion of the course. Grading Policy Grading will consist of the following: Participation 20% Examinations 30% Assignments 25% Hands-on projects 25% Weekly Assignment Schedule All assignments will be posted daily to the teacher s web page calendar. Students are expected to read chapter content 20 minutes nightly. Any assignments not completed in class and do not require lab equipment constitutes a homework assignment. Any late assignment not receiving prior approval for late submission is subject to a 1 letter grade reduction. I also reserve the right not to accept work deemed to be unreasonably late. Attendance Policy It is important for students to understand the Attendance category for grading includes student personal class conduct meaning compliance with classroom expectations posted on my website. Just as in business and industry, where employees are expected to show up on time every day, students are expected to be on time for classes every day. The use of MP3 players in class is absolutely prohibited and subject to Irvington High School administrative procedures, likewise cell phones. Tardiness reduces instructional time and is disruptive to the classroom. Tardiness may prevent the student from receiving a course certificate. Students completing this course with a grade of C or better will receive a Mission Valley ROP Certificate of Completion listing competencies achieved in the course. There are no exceptions. Make up assignments will be given for excused absences only, which include medical, legal or bereavement circumstances. Failure to complete make up assignments will adversely affect your grade. If you are tardy or miss a class multiple times, you will lose units of credit and your grade will be adversely affected. Credits are earned by attendance only and cannot be made up. Class Events There are certain events during the school year designed to expose the student to the industry and other technology events. These events are voluntary and students are encouraged to participate in these events such as; Cisco Systems Inc., Shadow Day, STRUT competition, and Cisco at Ohlone. Others may be scheduled during the course of the school year. Externships: Students who successfully complete the required class assignments with a 75% or better during the first semester may be eligible to be placed in an externship (community classroom) during the second semester. Those assigned to externships are responsible for providing their own transportation to the extern site. All

4 appropriate administrative paperwork must be completed prior to assignment. Paperwork not completed means no assignment. Expected School-wide Learning Results Both Mission Valley ROP and Irvington High School are committed to the development and preparation of students for higher education and entry into the labor force. As such, there are clearly defined school wide learning outcomes expected of students which staff and faculty are committed to. These outcomes are clearly identified on the teacher s webpage and your signature indicates that you have read these outcomes. Student Portfolio By the end of the course, each student is expected to complete a student portfolio which will contain at a minimum, cover letter and resume, job application, and sample of student work.

5 Note to Parents Students will need to provide their own transportation to and from their extern site. Mission Valley ROP is pleased to accept cash donations that will provide enhanced learning opportunities for students beyond their customary curriculum needs. Donations are voluntary, but much appreciated. Donation contribution is not a requirement for participating in any Mission Valley ROP educational activity, nor will it affect student grades. To parents whose careers are in the field of Information and Communication Technology and would like to contribute their time to advise on program improvements for our technology courses, Mission Valley ROP/Irvington High School Program Advisory Committee is seeking new membership. This committee meets twice a year for a couple of hours in the late afternoon and advises educators on program improvements. This is an opportunity to observe and advise on program improvements which serve our students. If you are interested, you may contact me at halbizo@fremont.k12.ca.us for additional details Mission Valley ROP is committed to preparing students for the workforce. This preparation includes technical skills as well as business ethics. Mission Valley ROP does not condone cheating. Any student caught cheating on an exam or copying work from other students will be given one warning and a failing grade on that assignment. Any subsequent incident may result in termination from his/her Mission Valley ROP program, a failing grade, and loss of credits. Homework and class assignments can be found on my calendar at Irvington.org/halbizo. Students invariably will have homework reading assignments of approximately 20 minutes nightly excluding Friday and weekends which is consistent with FUSD homework policy. However, for those who have not completed assignments or are in danger of failing, the decision for additional work beyond the prescribed limits is at your discretion. All student curriculums for this class is on-line at cisco.netacad.net. All student chapter exams are available during the year for your inspection. However, you are reminded that this is for each chapter exam and does not include other grading criteria such as class participation, lab assignments etc. By week two each student will have a Cisco Academy account. To access this account your student will have the user ID and password. I do not have the passwords and therefore cannot gain access. Each student is given a Media Release form upon the start of class. This form accompanies the syllabus and must be signed by the parent or guardian giving permission, or not giving permission for photography or participation in media related events. Not giving permission will not reflect on student s grade. Parents are highly encouraged to establish an account on SchoolLoop for the purposes of monitoring their child s progress. The link to ShoolLoop can be found on either Irvington s website or on my site. Students/Parents/Guardians---Please sign and return both this page and the Media Release Contract to the instructor. By signing below you acknowledge that you have read and understand the responsibilities of the Computer Use Agreement and course syllabus for the Computer Support Specialist program. Signature: Signature of the parent is required and to be returned to the instructor. Student Name-Please print legibly: Parent signature Date:
