1 Technologies Division Annual Report Highlights July 1, 2002 June 30, 2003 ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT The Engineering and Technology Department conducts programs in Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, and Computer Aided Drafting and Design, and Networking. ENGINEERING The engineering program has a joint admission agreement with NJIT. During the year, many enhancements to the courses were made including extensive on-line tutorials and two new course web sites in ENGI 241 and ENGI 242. In addition, the department offered ENGI 101 through ITV. New modules and course projects were developed and revised during each of the long semesters, and incorporated into the curriculum. These revisions will better align the BCC curriculum with that of NJIT and provide better enrollment and retention of engineering students by introducing them to hands-on engineering concept-based projects early in the program. Work continues to convert much of the remaining traditional lecture material into to PowerPoint, and a laptop computer with LCD projector continues to be integrated into the instruction. The PowerPoint presentations are also converted to Adobe Acrobat format, which may then be downloaded from the course website for use by the student. The Engineering and Technology Department course websites are: Additional web based tutorials and on-line course offerings in engineering, engineering technology, and CADD continue to be developed and explored. ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY The Department has completed training faculty the second year of the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification training. The first courses were offered during Spring 2003, and the final two courses will be offered in Fall A lab has been identified and renovations are scheduled for this summer. In addition to offering course at the Lincroft campus, 1 section of the CCNA program was conducted at the New Jersey Coastal Communiversity (NJCC) during the Spring 2003 semester. Training for one faculty member on UNIX Network Administration will be completed during May 2003, and incorporated in new courses during the next academic year. The Cisco and MCSE curriculum were incorporated into a new AAS degree program in Network Engineering Technology and Administration, which has completed the approval process and will be implemented beginning Fall In addition to the two options in the program, there are 3 currently three certificate programs: A+ COMPUTER REPAIR TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE CISCO COMPUTER LAN/WAN TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE COMPUTER NETWORKING ADMINISTRATION CERTIFICATE Page 1
2 Technologies Division Annual Report Highlights July 1, 2002 June 30, 2003 In addition, the department is working on the final stages of NSF grant application to fund program development and program improvement in Information. Specific focus will be on creating programs in Wireless Communications. We have developed relationships and partners with twelve colleges across the country, and we anticipate receiving information about the grant application shortly. CADD The CADD program continued integration of advanced 3D CADD software into the program. Pro/Engineer and AutoDesk Inventor was adopted to incorporate parametric 3D-modeling concepts into the CADD program. This software also provides manufacturing and engineering analysis tools that will be integrated into the CADD and ENGI programs. Pro/Engineer has been incorporated into the curriculum as a new module in the existing 3D modeling course (CADD 214) and, work is underway to create a series of 3D modeling courses that will exclusively utilize this software. This course will form a mini-certificate and will include concepts from manufacturing and engineering design and analysis. Working with the ARCH and INTD programs, an experimental course using ArchiCAD was offered twice (ARCH/CADD/INTD 00E). The new course proposal paperwork has been completed, and is currently waiting approval. This course introduces parametric 3D architecture into both the CADD and ARCH programs. Work continued to revise the CADD program to aid the transition from manual/board drafting to CADD. All of the courses have been revised in some fashion to include the concepts of manual/board drafting. In addition to the course revisions, the course sequence and offerings have also been modified, and will continue to be finetuned. Specifically, Lisa Hailey revised CADD 121 (Engineering Graphics with CAD) to include sketching assignments. Other course revisions dealt with implementing core competencies, and updating the courses after the new software adoption. The CADD and Architecture faculty are working to develop a joint certificate to provide training for an Architectural CADD Technician. This would fill a major need in many architectural firms, providing a technician capable of producing drawings using a CADD system, with an underlying understand of basic architectural construction. One last initiative, that the department is investigating, is creating online versions of CADD course and offering them via the web. Page 2
3 Technologies Division Annual Report Highlights July 1, 2002 June 30, 2003 COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Computer Science Department offers an AS and AAS in Computer Science, as well as a Webmaster Certificate and a Network Administration Certificate jointly with the Engineering and Technology Department. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT The Computer Science Department continues to develop new courses and resign current courses. All course syllabi have been upgraded for the new Windows XP platform. The Department is currently in the process of the resign of the AAS and AS Programs. These revised programs will be implemented in Spring The department has completed the implementation of the Web Master Certificate Program. This involves four new web courses; two (Comp 166/167), which were implemented in the Spring 2002, and two (Comp 165/168) for Fall We have our first students graduating from this program in May In addition, many of the current courses were revised for the Fall These include COMP 105, COMP 126, COMP 129, COMP 140, and COMP 145. Current plan for courses revisions this summer are COMP 116, COMP 126, COMP 129, COMP 132, COMP 145, COMP 185, COMP 225 COMP 233 and COMP 245. NEW HARDWARE INSTALLATION During the Summer 2002 we installed removable hard drives in ATC 020 for the new COMP 165 course. During the Summer 2002 we installed additional memory in the Network lab ATC 018. NEW SOFTWARE INSTALLATION During the Summer 2002 all the labs in the department were converted to Windows XP and Office XP. This upgrade is required for the COMP 129 course and other related micro base applications and languages. TRAINING Faculty members James Lawaich, Thomas Setaro, John Mensing, Mark Lynn and Dr. Thomas Doll have attended various training courses in New York City during the year. Page 3
4 Technologies Division Annual Report Highlights July 1, 2002 June 30, 2003 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT The Automotive Technology Department offers an AAS in Automotive Technology with three areas of specialization, and a number of Certificate programs. They have a strong relationship with General Motors and Toyota, and have developed a training partnership with STS. Last June, the Department received notification that it received NATEF recertification for five years. This accomplishment was due to a major investment of time and resources by the college and all members of the department. During the fall term, Automotive Technology Department conducted an Open house. The program was attended by over 450 students from nineteen high schools. The department also conducted a combined T-TEN and GMASEP meeting to review the plans and agree on levels of participation for the High School Guidance Counselor Conference. The conference, originally scheduled for December, was postponed due to bad weather, and held in March. The conference was attended by guidance counselors from twenty-nine high schools, and three different presentations were conducted. Articulation agreements with the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology and SUNY Farmingdale have begun and discussions are ongoing. During the year, the department hosted a meeting with Volvo to investigate and develop a training relationship. Page 4
