Instruction will include troubleshooting, diagnostics, and adjustment of automobile emissions systems to meet the requirements of the California State (Smog) Inspection and Maintenance Program. The Clean Air Car Course is required by the State prior to registration for the State Smog License examination. Schedule Description: This course will prepare you to become a smog technician. The course will include troubleshooting, diagnostics, and adjustment of automobile emissions systems to meet the requirements of the California State (Smog) Inspection and Maintenance Program. The Clean Air Car Course is required by the State prior to registration for the State Smog License examination. This course will prepare you for the ASE L-1 Examination. Be prepared to enter the automotive field, as a general repair technician at all general service and repair stations, or apprentice level at the dealership level (manufacture level). (OESLO 1, 3, 4 & 5) 2. Have the ability to locate the appropriate information in repair manuals or online resources necessary to properly diagnose and repair system failures. (OESLO 1, 2, 4 & 5) 3. Demonstrate the ability to understand and use the repair information found in both repair manuals and online resources including wiring diagrams, trouble trees, torque specs, and all other necessary information. (OESLO 1, 2, 4 & 5) 4. Properly diagnose all major automotive systems using manufactures recommended procedures. (OESLO 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) 5. Demonstrate the ability to properly adjust and repair all major automotive systems. Meet or exceed all manufacture specifications. (OESLO 1, 4 & 5) 6. Be prepared to take and pass all ASE examinations A1 A8 and the L1 advanced ASE examination. (OESLO 1, 2 & 5) 7. Clearly explain and practice all safety standards with regard to lifting equipment, shop machinery (brake lathe, strut compressor, machining equipment), chemicals, tool usage, and proper procedures regarding oil and chemical disposal. 5 Midterm and Final exam: The students will be assessed on their knowledge and skill in the theory, operation and inspection of emission control systems through participation in lecture/discussion and demonstration, as well as exams following the state required format in the areas listed under content outline. CSLO 3 Homework assignment: Students will be assessed through completion of the course workbook. Workbook assignments follow the course outline and provide experience in developing the knowledge and skill necessary to inspect, adjust and repair emission control systems. The workbook must be successfully completed before a student s name will be forwarded to the state for eligibility to take the test to obtain their Inspection and Maintenance Inspectors License. Lab assignment: Lab assignments will assess the students ability to inspect, adjust and repair emission control systems. CSLO 4 Midterm and Final exam: Students must document all inspection reports and work orders required for smog inspections. These reports are legal documents that must be accurately completed, according to bureau standards. These records must be retained for three years. Exams will assess the students ability to meet the state required standard for forms and records used for the smog program. CSLO 5 Lab assignment: students are required to complete a minimum of five smog inspections, performing all diagnostics and repairs required to bring vehicles into compliance. The instructor will assess the students ability to complete the smog inspection within state requirements. Method of Evaluation/Grading: A level student work is characterized by: Module exams and final that accurately answer questions regarding the use of analyzers to diagnose emission problems the use of manuals to identify emission control systems at 90% or above; homework that accurately answers questions regarding how to perform routine adjustments of fuel and ignition systems to lower emissions; and lab work that safely and accurately uses analyzers to diagnose emission problems and the operation and inspection of emission control systems, inspects, adjusts and repairs emission control systems accurately; and complete a minimum of five smog inspections, performing all diagnostics and repairs required to bring vehicles into compliance without guidance. C level student work is characterized by: Module exams and final that accurately answer questions regarding the use of analyzers to diagnose emission problems the use of manuals to identify emission control systems at 70% to 79.9%; homework accurately answers questions regarding how to perform routine adjustments of fuel and ignition systems to lower emissions at an accuracy rate of 70% to 79.9%; and lab work that safely and accurately uses analyzers to diagnose emission problems and the operation and inspection of emission control systems, inspects, adjusts and repairs emission control systems accurately with guidance; and complete a minimum of five smog inspections, performing all diagnostics and repairs required to bring vehicles into compliance with some guidance from the instructor. According to BAR guidelines, students must pass 3 exams consisting of 50 questions per test with a grade of 70% or better in order to be eligible to take the State Licensing Exam. Letter grades will be assessed through state module exams, workbook/homework assignments and lab assignments.
