(Each of the above student learning outcomes for the general education program has a written explanation with illustrations and examples of its application within courses, as well as specific assessment criteria. Consult the GE program information pages.) None Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs) COMSC 011 is a required course in this degree/certificate program: Networking and Security PSLOs 1. Provide technical support for local area networks including hardware, software, and security, and manage network uses and resources. 2. Develop security policies consistent with current standards and then provide analysis of and document security and other network issues. 3. Write code in support of network operations. Course-Level Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs): At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to: CSLO 1: Evaluate and apply server fundamentals, including hardware, software, and storage systems. (PLSO 1, 2 - Networking & Security) CSLO 2: CSLO 3: CSLO 4: Install, configure, and upgrade network servers. (PLSO 1, 3 - Networking & Security) Identify and employ industry best practices for deploying, securing, troubleshooting, and remotely managing servers. (PLSO 1, 2, 3 - Networking & Security) Identify and employ industry best practices for disaster recovery. (PLSO 1, 2, 3 - Networking & Security) Assessments: CSLO 1: CSLO 2: Evaluate and apply server fundamentals, including hardware, software, and storage systems. Chapter quiz to differentiate form factors in server and their relative advantages and disadvantages. Written report to evaluate hardware and operating system software choices to run on large capacity servers. Assignment for the configuration map of the storage area. Install, configure, and upgrade network servers. Assignments to do needs and impact analysis as well as the preparations for an installation. In labs and chapter quizzes, network operating systems will be installed, configured, and upgraded in a virtual environment. Written paper to describe the impact mitigation and back out steps required if the installation fails. Form Revised Page 3 of 6

4 CSLO 3: Identify and employ industry best practices for deploying, securing, troubleshooting, and remotely managing servers. In virtual labs, network operating systems will be deployed, secured, and troubleshot in a virtual environment. A test in which students identify best practices and industry tools for deployment and remote management of server technology. A paper containing a diagram of security domains and layers. CSLO 4: Identify and employ industry best practices for disaster recovery. A chapter test in which threat vectors and recovery approaches are matched. A written paper in which the recovery of a single server is outlined. A report after the fact of what was done for the recovery of a server cluster in a data center. Method of Evaluation/Grading: CSLO 1: Evaluate and apply server fundamentals, including hardware, software, and storage systems. A-level: Completely differentiates and elaborates as well as compares and contrasts between the form factors of servers such as tower, rack-mounted, and blade. Describes their relative advantages and disadvantages as compared to each other s form factor, especially with power and space requirements. Evaluates operating system software choices to run on the server such as Windows, UNIX, and Linux given operating conditions, hardware, and stability requirements. Identifies the configurations and types of onboard memory and storage as well as storage area networks used in conjunction with large capacity servers. C-level: Broadly differentiates and elaborates between a majority of form factors of server such as tower, rack-mounted, and blade. Describes some of their relative advantages and disadvantages as compared to each other s form factor, especially with power and space requirements. Enumerates operating system choices to run on the server such as Windows, UNIX, and Linux, given operating conditions, hardware and stability requirements. Offers possible configurations and types of onboard memory and storage as well as storage area networks used in conjunction with some large capacity servers. CSLO 2: Install, configure, and upgrade network servers. A-level: Performs complete needs and impact analysis of server hardware and software prior to upgrade or clean installation. Develops configuration diagrams of server hardware and requisite software and firmware. Provides pre-installation plan, including verification of hardware and software compatibilities, needed third-party files, backups, testing and piloting of the installation process, and mitigation of risks including a fall back plan if server does not perform as expected. Lists all required and customized steps to follow during actual installation. Performs an installation of an operating system in a virtual environment. C-level: Performs high-level needs and impact analysis of server hardware and software prior to upgrade or clean installation. Develops cursory configuration diagrams of some of the server hardware and requisite software and firmware. Provides suggestions for pre-installation plan, which may include some verification of hardware and software compatibilities, needed third-party files, backups, testing and piloting of the installation process, and mitigation of risks including a fall back plan if server does not perform as expected. Lists most major required steps to follow during actual installation. Form Revised Page 4 of 6

Compares and contrasts security domains, approaches, and layering in terms of applicability as well as how they complement each other. Describes day-to-day datacenter operations security for backups (onsite and offsite), patches, new releases, and testing. Demonstrates the usage of troubleshooting heuristics and methods in context of the tools and techniques currently available to the industry. Discusses the remote management of servers and the scenarios, equipment, and facilities likely to be encountered on the job. C-level: Lists and may have partial explanations of deployment best practices and processes in terms of hypervisors, replication, stand-alone systems and industry tools and facilities to accomplish same.
