1 Hardware Announcement April 27, 2004 Cisco MDS 9000 Enhancements Fabric Manager Server Package Bundle, Mainframe Package Bundle, and 4 Port IP Storage Services Module Overview The Cisco MDS 9000 family of Fabric Switch and Director offerings, resold by IBM, now offer expanded capabilities, with the introduction of optional Fabric Manager Server Package Bundle, Mainframe Package Bundle with FICON protocol support, and a 4 Port Internet Protocol Storage (IPS) Services Module for the Cisco MDS 9216 (2062-D01), MDS 9506 (2062-D04/T04), and MDS 9509 (2062-D07/T07). Also introduced for these Cisco models are the Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol (FCIP) Activation option for the 4 Port IPS Services Module, and Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplex (CWDM) fiber optic transceiver features. The Cisco MDS 9000 Fabric Manager function is included at no additional cost in the base MDS 9000 switches, and is designed to provide switch configuration and troubleshooting capabilities. The optional Cisco MDS 9000 Fabric Manager Server (FMS) Package Bundle extends Cisco Fabric Manager by helping provide historical performance data collection for network traffic hot-spot analysis, centralized management services, and support for advanced application integration. The FMS Package Bundle includes first-year software warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the software package. The optional Cisco MDS 9000 Mainframe Package Bundle is a collection of advanced capabilities to enable MDS 9000 operation in mainframe storage network applications. The Mainframe Package Bundle includes the following features, as well as first-year software warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the software package. Mainframe FICON protocol and FICON Control Unit Port (CUP) SANs for FICON and FCP intermixing FICON Switch Cascading and Fabric Binding The Cisco 4 Port IPS Services Module is designed to help increase affordability of Internet Small Computer System Interface (iscsi) host connection to Fibre Channel storage. Optionally with the FCIP Activation feature, the Cisco 4 Port IPS Services Module enables FCIP support for extended distance fabric operation while preserving advanced Virtual SAN (VSAN) capabilities across LAN and WAN connections. Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplex (CWDM) fiber optic transceiver features are orderable on optional Modules for integration into Cisco MDS 9216 (2062-D01), MDS 9506 (2062-D04/T04), and MDS 9509 (2062-D07/T07) models. This allows customers to purchase individual CWDM transceivers for extended distance connections, while also allowing customers the option to add CWDM mux capability (2062-CW1) when needed. 2 Description New features for CISCO MDS 9216, MDS 9506, and MDS 9509 products 4 Port IPS Services Module for iscsi and FCIP (#2218): The optional 4 Port IPS Services Module provides connection to Gigabit Ethernet networks and support for low-cost iscsi host initiators to access Fibre Channel storage. The optional FCIP Activation features allow the 4 Port IPS Services Module to extend native Fibre Channel Fabric over LAN and WAN infrastructure. The 4 Port IPS Services Module has been designed to enable the use of iscsi to extend the benefits of Fibre Channel SAN-based storage to IP-enabled servers at a lower cost point and to a broader array of workgroup platforms than supported with traditional SAN deployments. The iscsi capability helps increase storage utilization and availability through consolidation of IP and Fibre Channel block storage, supporting transparent storage administration practices such as zoning storage resources. The 4 Port IPS Services Module may be ordered with either Short Wave (SW) SFP, or Long Wave (LW) Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optic transceivers, and CWDM wavelength-specific SFPs (#5311-#5318); however, only one SFP is required as a minimum configuration. The 4 Port IPS Services Module is compatible with Tri-Rate SFPs (#5210 and #5220), and CWDM wavelength-specific SFPs (#5311-#5318). FCIP Activation for 4 Port IPS Services Module (#2219/#2220): FCIP Activation on the 4 Port IPS Services Module is designed to help simplify data protection and business continuance strategies by enabling backup, remote replication, and disaster recovery over LAN and WAN distances using open-standard FCIP tunneling. Specifically, FCIP enables support for extended distance Fibre Channel fabric operation, while supporting the Cisco MDS 9000 family of enhanced capabilities including VSANs, advanced traffic management, and security across LAN and WAN connections. Additionally, FCIP improves utilization of WAN resources for backup and replication by tunneling up to three virtual Inter Switch Links (ISLs) on a single Gigabit Ethernet port. Finally, FCIP can help reduce SAN complexity by eliminating the need to deploy and manage a separate remote connectivity platform. Cisco CWDM Solution SFP Transceivers (#5311-#5318): Fibre Channel ports on the Cisco MDS 9216 Switch, MDS 9506 and MDS 9509 Director may be configured to accept either SW SFP, LW SFP, and now CWDM wavelength-specific transceivers. The CWDM wavelength-specific SFPs (#5311-#5318) each operate at one of eight wavelengths and may be configured into any available port on the optional Fibre Channel port card or IP IPS Services port card modules. All available Fibre Channel ports must be populated with SFP optic transceivers. Fibre Channel Modules are compatible with Fibre Channel specific SFPs (#5230 and #5240), Tri-Rate SFPs (#5210 and #5220), and CWDM wavelength-specific SFPs (#5311-#5318). Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise Package Bundle (#7010/#7020): The Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise Package Bundle announced in Hardware Announcement , dated October 14, 2003, is designed to provide enhanced security and management features, bundled for convenience and added flexibility. The Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise Package Bundle includes the following capabilities: LUN zoning Read-only zones Port lockdown The Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise Package Bundle has been restructured to include the first-year software warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the software package. Upon selection of the Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise Package Bundle, customers will be required to purchase (or already own) two additional years of post-warranty support on the MDS 9000 base hardware. Cisco MDS 9000 Fabric Manager Server Package Bundle (#7015/#7025): The optional Cisco Fabric Manager Server (FMS) Package Bundle extends Cisco Fabric Manager by helping provide historical performance data collection for network traffic hot-spot analysis, centralized management services, and support for advanced application integration. The Cisco FMS Package Bundle is structured to include the first year software warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the software package. Upon selection of the Cisco FMS Package Bundle, customers will be required to purchase (or already own) two additional years of post-warranty support on the MDS 9000 base hardware. Cisco MDS 9000 Mainframe Package Bundle (#7030/#7035): The optional MDS 9000 Mainframe Package Bundle is a collection of advanced capabilities to enable MDS 9000 operation in mainframe storage network applications. The Cisco Mainframe Package Bundle is structured to include the first year software warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the software package. Upon selection of the Cisco Mainframe Package Bundle, customers will be required to purchase (or already own) two additional years of post-warranty support on the MDS 9000 base hardware. In order for Cisco post-warranty support to be in effect on MDS 9000 Module features, the base Switch or Director model must first be under Cisco warranty or Cisco post-warranty support. The Cisco post-warranty support features are available at initial plant order, and provide the ability to establish up to two years, 24x7, on-site Cisco support, beyond the first-year warranty period. Cisco post-warranty support options are subject to Cisco s standard Post-Warranty Support Contract terms and conditions included in the packaging with the eligible products. Some limitations apply. Support of the MDS 9509 is limited to a seven-rack-unit chassis. Support of the MDS 9000 family is limited to switches with 16-port Fibre Channel switching modules. The zseries and G5/G6 servers support of FICON and FCP on the MDS 9000 Switches includes support for FICON and FCP intermix in the same MDS 9000 Switches, FICON cascading, (a single hop), as well as Control Unit Port (CUP) support. These functions are offered in the MDS 9000 Mainframe Package. The zseries and G5/G6 servers also support use of the Cisco Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) fiber optic transceiver features. The MDS 9000 Switches are rack-units supporting 1 or 2 Gigabits per second (Gbps) auto-sensing short wavelength and long wavelength transceivers, as well as the optional CWDM Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers, which may be configured into any available port on the optional Fibre Channel port card. 5 Cable orders: A fiber optic cable is required for attaching Cisco MDS 9000 Switch or Director products to host computer system adapters, or other Fibre Channel storage area components. The fiber optic cable can be customer supplied, and must meet specifications defined by Cisco Systems. However, where a limited distance connection exists, fiber optic cables can be ordered with Cisco products from IBM. While operating at 2 Gbps Fibre Channel standard tolerances, 50.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable is designed for use up to 300 meter distances, and 62.5/125 micrometer fiber optic cable is designed for use up to 175 meter distances. The fiber optic cable connection is a Lucent Connector (LC) type. In many situations, the required lengths and installation of fiber optic cables will be unique to each customer s configuration and facility specifications. Product support services, offered by IBM Global Services Site and Connectivity Solutions, can provide assistance for these unique cabling and installation requirements. Security, auditability, and control The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
