ZigBee extension to support NIALM Increased energy efficiency through Non-Intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring (NIALM) 6th European ZigBee Developers Conference June 28, Munich Pascal Walther R&D Engineer - ihomelab Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland
Agenda About the ihomelab Motivation Research project LoReMA Extension of the ZigBee Electrical Measurement Cluster Results Conclusion & Outlook 2/22
Intelligent living begins here The Swiss Research Lab for Building Intelligence 3/22
ihomelab Research Area The Building as a System Building Intelligence Energy Efficiency Ambient Assisted Living Human Building Interaction Ambient Awareness & Intelligence, Sensornetworks, Contentmanagement 4/22
ihomelab Research Team 5/22
Motivation Most of the private household and industrial buildings users have only a small or no understanding about their own energy consumption. 5 to 15% energy savings through Feedback Consumers need to see and understand the electricity being used by different appliances The resolution of the buildings main meter is too small We present and discuss a novel approach to support user driven energy efficiency with the usage of ZigBee. 6/22
Research project LoReMA LoReMA: Load Recognizing Meter and Actuator Requirements Identify all appliances within households and offices using NIALM for load-disaggregation Decentralized wireless ZigBee measurement nodes Switching of appliances with the integrated actuator Low power design for maximum energy efficiency Minimum installation effort for efficient retrofit 7/22
LoReMA: System Main issue: Decentralised energy measurement placed in power outlets 8/22
LoReMA: ZigBee Communication Reasons for the use of ZigBee: Wireless communication Secure and reliable communication Easy to set up a network Mesh-Network for multiple nodes The low power consumption of ZigBee 9/22
LoReMA: Idea of using ZigBee (1) Smart Energy Home Automation Simple Metering Load Control Coexistence of both profiles? 10/22
LoReMA: Idea of using ZigBee (2) Coexistence of the Smart Energy and Home Automation Profile Smart Energy Profile (SEP) for the transmission of the energy measurements values. Home Automation to switch the Actuator and dim lights Technical expertise The SEP has a higher security level Without an injury of the standard the coexistence is not possible Exclusive use of the Smart Energy Profile 11/22
LoReMA: The usage of the SEP Parameters to be transmitted LoReMA Fingerprint 12/22
Extension of the ZigBee Electrical Measurement Cluster While ZigBee has evolved to major standard and is already widely used for Smart Energy applications, it is not yet ready for Non-Intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring (NIALM). No electrical fingerprints can be transmitted Only the active Power is defined in the SEP Parameter of LoReMA: active Power (P), reactive Power (Q) and the current harmonics (only odds from the1 st to the11 th ) In cooperation with Landis+Gyr we submitted an amendment to the ZigBee organisation to expand the SEP appliance specific electrical fingerprints for NIALM. LoReMA use an adapted ZigBee Smart Energy Profile. 13/22
Extension of the ZigBee Electrical Measurement Cluster Current State There was a voting in the ZigBee Organisation to integrate this Extension of the ZigBee Cluster 1 st draft of the cluster is published 14/22
LoReMA: ZigBee Network ZigBee Profile: Smart Energy Profile (SEP) Network topology: Mesh-Network ZigBee Devices: - Coordinator, Routers and End-Devices Smart Energy Devices: - Metering Device - Load-Control Device - Energy Service Portal (ESP) Coordinator (ESP) as Cluster Head Tasks: - Network configuration - Channel selection - Assignment of the node ID s (short address) 15/22
LoReMA: Used SEP Devices and Clusters Legend: S = Server, C = Client, EP = End-Point 16/22
LoReMA: Communication path 17/22
LoReMA: End User Information, Load Disaggregation 18/22
Conclusion The combination of NIALM with ZigBee for the communication of the individual devices offers a great potential in terms of energy efficiency in modern homes and offices. The advantages of ZigBee: Wireless networking Easy installation But there is still work: During our research activities it became clear that ZigBee it not yet ready for NIALM. 19/22
Outlook Our further activities With regard to ZigBee and in cooperation with Landis+Gyr we will continue to work on the extension of the electrical measurement cluster. The extended cluster is on track to come in the ZigBee Standard. 20/22
Acknowledgments The project LoReMA has been founded by a project consortium including SFOE (Swiss Federal Office of Energy) and several industrial partners including BKW-FMB, EWZ, SWISSCOM, Landis+Gyr and Feller Schneider-Electric company. manage energy better 21/22
